Make up for 12.5 year old dd

Dd is 12.5 (Year 8, 13 in Feb) and just starting to get interested in make up.

She needed some make up recently for her school dance show so I bought her some cheap bits from Primark to start with.

She's asking for some better stuff for Xmas this year and has specifically mentioned a Naked palette (older sister has one). I feel a bit uncomfortable buying such an expensive brand for a not yet 13 year old. But maybe I should get it if that's what she wants.

Any other good brands I can look at that are popular with this age?

Superdrugs brand. Revolution I think it’s called
NYX
Maybelline

Signifyingnothing · 10/10/2019 16:39

You need to hit Superdrug like it's a rat in a bag*

*Disclaimer: I previously owned rats and never hit them in a bag.

Was going to say Revolution. It's fab.
I would also recommend Sleek.

Beauty pie is really cheap but good quality ime (although I don’t use any ‘unnatural’ make up so can’t comment on the fancy stuff but their basics have been great for the price). They also have good skin care to help deal with the make up grossness.

SaveMeBarry · 10/10/2019 20:07

Another vote for Revolution and they're currently offering up to a third off gift sets. The Chocolate palettes are lovely and this cute set would cost less than a UD palette.

At her age and given she's just getting interested in makeup, I think steer clear of the higher end stuff. Half the fun for teens is experimenting and trying different looks which is much easier to do with a variety of affordable bits and pieces.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/10/2019 20:09

I'd agree with the above. I'd suggest also adding in some eye makeup remover

WagtailRobin · 10/10/2019 23:09

PIXI (BY PETRA) about £22, I love their palettes and they are not as expensive as Urban Decay and the like but if you think that's still too expensive for someone so young then I would say REVOLUTION (Superdrug).

Would she be disappointed with a "lesser" brand? If you don't think she would be, then there are loads of cheaper alternatives. In fact there are two websites that specialise in "lower" branded make up at massively discounted prices, brands like Maybelline, Rimmel etc.

DreamingofSunshine · 11/10/2019 08:06

Which naked palette? The quality of it is lovely and it's not tested on animals. You could wait for one of the department stores to do a 20%/10% off promotion and buy it then, or in duty free if you know anyone going through the airport Pre-Christmas?

Eye shadow lasts a while so its not a bad make up item to spend on, I wouldn't buy a teenager an expensive mascara as they are meant to be changed every 3-6 months.

LemonPrism · 11/10/2019 08:09

I had UD by that age. Wouldn't you rather they had better quality makeup than primark shit full of who-knows-what?

13YO don't want cheap brands.

Mrsjayy · 11/10/2019 08:09

Super drug little make up basket and knock your self out their own MUA brand is great the pallettes are "knock off" urban.decay and are fine.

Fstar · 11/10/2019 10:14

Id go with revolution too, good quality and price (superdrug sometimes do 3 for 2). Also focallure are great dupes for high end, i recommend the sunrise and early possibilities palettes focallure.com/

They take a couple of weeks to arrive so allow time for that

Fstar · 11/10/2019 10:29

A fluffy christmas blanket for living room goes down a treat too

reluctantbrit · 11/10/2019 13:21

Don’t forget good quality brushes.

DD has a mix of brands, mainly Sleet and L’Oreal, she is still very much on experimenting so the expensive brands are too much in my opinion.

But you could get a basic one to start and then money to buy in the sales. I also found that DD has quite fixed opinions so buying the wrong colours are a disaster in her mind.

I bought my daughter the Urban Decay Naked palette last Christmas and she would have been the same age as your daughter now. This year I have got her another Urban Decay one which is called Honey. They are expensive but very good quality. Rimmel and Maybelline do some good bits as well. X
