Presents for a vegan

TrickyD · 08/10/2019 13:28

Our dearly loved DIL is a srict vegan. It is the annual head-scratching season for a nice Christmas present for her. I have been down the beauty/ bodycare route, she is not keen on selections of vegan cheeses or similar.
Last year I asked the same question on here and someone, whose name I apologise for forgetting, suggested a company selling beautiful pure cotton scarves. She was thrilled with the one I gave her, but obviously I can't repeat that this year. So, new suggestions very welcome, please.

It depends what she’s into really. I have a vegan friend who I buy books, wine (vegan obviously), jewellery, clothes, chocolate etc. You can buy most things really, a lot of things are vegan or have a vegan option.
What does she like?

MustardScreams · 08/10/2019 13:51

It was my friend’s 30th recently so I bought her a vegan scented candle, some ‘bee bombs’ (wildflowers that you scatter around for the bees), a string shopping bag, and a new KeepCup. She loved it all.

inwood · 08/10/2019 13:52

Money or a voucher. Much easier. Wrap it around a bottle of vegan wine.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 08/10/2019 13:54

Does she have any hobbies? Craft items, books, theatre/sports tickets are all vegan!

Cherryrainbow · 08/10/2019 13:56

Pritchard released a "dirty vegan recipe book" which is in the works, it looks great loads of nice recipes in it too.

Chillisauceboss · 08/10/2019 13:58

Are you London based by any chance?

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2019 13:59

What are her interests?

I always think toiletries are best avoided unless you know someone really wants them. Most people use really specific products and gifted toiletries tend to go unsued.

Is there a zero waste store near her? Vouchers for that so she can choose what she would like would be nice.

Faux sheepskin slippers are a nice treat- the White Company usually does nice ones.

Or how about a lovely blanket for cold nights. You can get some lovely luxurious bamboo ones.

readingismycardio · 08/10/2019 14:13

Just came here to say you're an amazing MIL. I wish mine put this effort into anything.

If you ever wanna go down the beauty route, Urban Decay has cruelty free & vegan products! My favorite brand

TrickyD · 08/10/2019 15:28

Gosh, reading that's a very kind thing to say.. She is so affectionate towards us and all the rest of the family that we love it when she, DS and small DGS come to stay and don't mind putting in an effort to produce nice vegan food for her.

She has always been a veggie , no problem there, as I rarely eat meat, but we were rather taken aback when they arrived one weekend and DS said "By the way, Mum, Exxxxs a vegan now'.

Anyway, back to suggestions; thank you so much everyone. I don't want to sound negative but some suggestions are so good she already has them like posh insulated flask and string bag, vegan shoes etc. She is not much of a drinker, nor does she really go in for jewellery or make up, and I want to get away from the toiletry route.

But the faux sheepskin slippers are an excellent suggestion, as is the dirty vegan cookbook and vegan candle(s). Their garden is small and professionally landscaped, I bet she would love the bee seeds but DS is very precious about his plot, she would have to sew them very sneakily. Their hobby is climbing and I don't really feel competent to buy that sort of stuff. No, chilisauce. we don't live in London, but they do.

Thanks again everyone, any more ideas?

Are there any autobiographies about climbers?
Or a handbag, a fiction book you think she’d enjoy, pj’s, slipper socks, posh coffee/tea/hot chocolate and a mug?

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2019 16:28

Ah!! Climbers, there are some excellent auto/biographies by climbers. Andy Kirkpatrick is current and writes very well. Andy Cave too- they have several books each. Julie Tullis’ autobiography Clouds From Both Sides is a good read about a woman who was extremely good in a very make world; the last chapter is very thought provoking.

Or look a BAM for a bamboo hat or leggings. If she is vegan and doesn’t wear wool, she may not be keen on plastic (acrylic) either. Or Patagonia (awesome climbing brand with amazing environmental credentials), use recycled plastic for all their synthetic products.

MustardScreams · 08/10/2019 16:29

@TrickyD the bee bombs are for hedgerows and verges, or open spaces with grass. They’re excellent! And make a good stocking filler.

Serin · 08/10/2019 21:02

readingismycardio I wasnt aware Urban Decay is considered suitable for Vegans?
I thought that L'oreal pissed off a lot of people by continuing to sell in China.
Which means that they 'allow' the Chinese government to test all their beauty products on animals before they sell them.
It's a minefield isnt it?

Ruralretreating · 08/10/2019 21:33

Is she a chocolate fan? There are some lovely new bars out recently that are Vegan and taste good - Moo free Cinder Toffee, Nomo bars (fruit crunch is my favourite), and Enjoy! Vanilla filled bar from Holland & Barrett is okay too. Booja Booja truffles are beautiful but pricey. I’m dairy-free and have sampled extensively Smile

DickVanTyke · 08/10/2019 21:33

What about a voucher for a massage/reflexology etc? I love getting the ones where you can choose what therapy you get.
Or a houseplant? Or if she’s also into ethical things then there are a lot of online stores where you can buy clothing, household stuff, candles etc.
Or a subscription- magazine, tea, flowers, spicery, organic veg box (maybe a bit too vegan 😁), books....
Or just an experience - theatre tickets, meal out, cinema etc.
How much are you looking to spend?

Crunched · 08/10/2019 21:41

I purchased a voucher for a foraging session for my vegan DD. The company is called Wild Food UK and they travel around the country doing these sessions which end with a lunch made of what has been gathered.
My DD found the day - well, 4 hours or so- fascinating and entertaining. (Also taking part were some vegans on a hen do!)

Chillisauceboss · 08/10/2019 21:44

@Crunched that sounds incredible do you have a link?!

TrickyD · 08/10/2019 22:43

That sounds amazing, Crunched. I bet she would love that. Will google.

A subscription to a vegan magazine?
Lots of vegan cookbooks on Amazon with great reviews too.

You could google 'accidentally vegan treats' or there's a website called 'The Vegan kind supermarket' which stocks lots of vegan treats. You could make her a hamper.

So lovely that you are doing this. I'm very lucky that my in laws are thoughtful like you about me being vegan. Even cooked vegan Christmas dinner for everyone last year! 😍 so lovely when people are accepting ❤️

TrickyD · 09/10/2019 12:07

Clayplease, yes we make sure that Christmas dinner has plenty of vegan friendly options though we also have all the usual stuff for the family rampant carnivores.
We are actually having the C dinner in advance this year as DIL, DS and DGS are going to Brazil to stay with her mum and family, she is Brazilian and vegan Brazilians are a rare species. They were with us last Christmas and I hope it will be 'our turn' next year. But we will have to wait and see. The previous Christmas DH snd I went with them to Brazil for DGS christening, obviously a big deal there, but of course we then miss the other grandkids.

Anyway, it is because of their departure in mid December that the Christmas present hunt has started earlier than usual.
