Real tree with carpet?

For the last few years we have had a horrible artificial tree that DH bought one year. I finally felt like we had got out money's worth out of it and threw it out when we moved house earlier this year and have been looking forward to having a real tree. However, our new house has brand new carpet in the living room. Is it going to get sap dropped on it and full of needles? Should I buy another artificial tree?!

I’ve had a real tree before and never noticed any problems. If you are concerned, put a Christmas rug or tablecloth underneath it, or even a sheet of industrial strength polythene (from DIY shops or garden centres.) Make sure you keep your real tree well watered and away from direct heat and it shouldn’t drop many needles.

make sure you get a non drop variety of tree and hoover under regulalry. We dont notice many needles to be honest. the worst bit is taking the tree out at the end as that is when the most dropping will occur. We use ground sheets to contain it. But worth thinking about route in and out of house and size of tree as a six footer is harder to manouvre than a smaller one. You could always pop a smaller tree on a low table to get the height.

We've always had real trees (well watered) with carpet. Yes, there are always some needles to vacuum up, even with a non-drop, but it's not a big deal, and I'd rather that any day than a fake tree.

I've never had one which dropped sap. They do drop needles but are easily hoovered up, assuming you dont have great thick share-price carpets? If you get the nordic blue ones, the needles are really easy to clear up and not sharp.

I've never had an issue with a real tree on carpet, I just hoover the needles up.

Home bargains have a stand that is in it's own bucket!! Genius. Then put a festive 'skirt' around it! The Range have loads!

If you get a Nordman Fir, they barely drop any needles at all over the xmas period if you water it sufficiently (esp.the first day or two when it will drink tons of water).

Getting it out of the house after xmas usually leaves needles everywhere though, it's a bit unavoidable by that stage because they've dried out by then.

@Windydaysuponus do they have them now this year???

Windydaysuponus · 08/10/2019 20:41

Saw it yesterday!!

Cocoaandbedsocks · 08/10/2019 22:01

Thank you all! You've reassured me that I can finally have a real tree this year. Smile

My trees are always sat in a 50 litre bucket of water.

This was the year I had a spruce - my favourite looking tree, but did cause a mess. Worth it tho 😊

I’ve never had an issue with real trees on my cream carpet. I think I may just get lucky every year as well because I never water my tree either, apart from letting the tree sit in water for two days before I put it up, and I’ve not had one die on me yet. There will be a lot of needles when you take the tree down and have to drag it out. But that just forms part of the big post Christmas clear out.

For the last few years I’ve got my real tree from IKEA, they have always been great quality and you get the bonus of getting a £10 ikea voucher with every tree you buy.

We have a Christmas themed hard wearing doormat (from the local garden centre) that we stick under the Christmas tree stand.

stackthecats · 11/10/2019 13:44

We kept a small extra square of the carpet, and get it out each year for the tree to sit on (a tip picked up from my Dad!)

I always put down a meter squared piece of Christmas oil cloth. Dunhelm do a great range.
