No princesses, fairies or magical animals allowed!

She’s a good and very keen reader but I’m struggling to find a series that she would love or individual titles. Recommendations please! I’ve heard Violet Mackerel books are good...any opinions?

Check Astrid Lindgren's books. There are lots out there apart from Pippi and my DD loved them all. Very different from the usual books on offer and a refreshing change.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 06/10/2019 20:37

Can you still get the animal ark books? I loved those at that age!

Wenchelda · 06/10/2019 20:40

My dd is the same age and book-mad. She likes/has read:

Storey treehouse series
Tom Gates series
Wimpy kid series
Harry Potter up to book 5
Worst witch series
Amelia Jane
Faraway tree
Paddington
Several Roald Dahl

Plus hundreds of fairy / unicorn / pony themed books Smile

Stompythedinosaur · 06/10/2019 20:44

Some of the books my 8yo has liked in the last year have been:

Kat Wolfe Investigates
The Dotty Detective books
The Animals of Farthing Wood
The Hobbit
Odd and the Frost Giants
How to Train Your Dragon

I am getting her Sophie and the Shadow Woods and some David Walliams books for Christmas after recommendations on here.

Ormally · 06/10/2019 22:41

The World According to Humphrey (and sequels). Big favourite and very glad I discovered them, they are memorable. Not a magical animal but a classroom hamster.

22Giraffes · 07/10/2019 14:38

My 7yo ds is enjoying
Tom Gates
Stick dog series
Flat Stanley series
World's worst children

imsorryiasked · 07/10/2019 22:34

Spy dog (and spy puppies / cats)
Jack Stalwart
Wild rescue
Adventures series by Bear Grylls (younger reader series)

Mrsfussypants1 · 07/10/2019 22:38

I haven't got any book suggestions but I've been on Amazon and spotted they are releasing a kids kindle paperwhite soon. It's a bit like the kids tablets with parental controls and rewards, but I think I like it for the kindle kids library you can access.

Mrsfussypants1 · 07/10/2019 22:45

It is pricey though at £99 pre order ( released Oct 30th) but come with a year of kids unlimited and a case in two stereo type colours. It will no doubt be on offer a couple of times before christmas as amazon usually do with own brand devices.Looks like the new kindle 10th generation with back light. I do love paper books, but find kindle I finally bought has been fab, though I'm not sure about childrens version, but it's not a tablet just an e reader.

Cherryrainbow · 07/10/2019 23:04

I have to admit after getting some of the David Williams books in McDonald's happy meals I'm a fan (my son is just coming up to 6) so I bought him the first "worlds worst children" book. As far as I can tell there's 3 of them?

Roald dahl and Jacqueline Wilson are classics.

Don't know if anyone remembers the book "the queens nose" but that was a favourite of mine as a child x

CoffeeChocolateWine · 07/10/2019 23:35

Thanks everyone. I have some great leads now Smile

The 'Clementine' series by Marla Frazee is good.
