Christmassy trip- where?

Hi, we are planning a weekend away before Christmas as we won't all be together at Christmas Sad

We will be travelling by train from Manchester and on a tight budget so will be premier inn stay. 2-3 hours by train is fine.

I was thinking of York but not sure. There might be somewhere better or more suited. We are after a real Christmassy feel, maybe a Christmas market, somewhere pretty and atmospheric. Not London, Chester, Manchester or Liverpool.

Mum is 80, and the three kids are 12, 11, and 4. They are easily pleased but mum can't do too much walking or anything involving lots of steps.

Any ideas please?

Edinburgh is magical at Christmas. So pretty and there is so much going on.

Aviemore McDonald resort also does Christmas weekends which might be easier with your mum.

I've just been looking at Edinburgh. We have never been.

I was going to suggest Chester, and the panto at Storyhouse. Maybe a day at Chester Zoo, and they sometimes have events at Grosevnor Theatre. Not sure how you would get on with avoiding steps though. It might be even to avoid steps in Liverpool.

Not Grosevnor Theatre, but the Grosevnor Museum. Apologies.

Aviemore isn't very Christmassy though :(

We go away for a Christmas break at the start of December every year, Favourite so far has been Edinburgh, Stayed at the Premier Inn at Haymarket. It was lovely.

I definitely fancy Edinburgh. We'd need to be at a hotel closest to the main events so not sure what is where. Is the castle accessible?

Yes castle is accessible,Book tickets online.
I'd recommend lunch or afternoon tea at The Witchery as well, It's lovely.
Haymarket PI is pretty central.

Birmingham has a big Christmas market. The actual city isn't that christmassy though.

Invisimamma · 05/10/2019 12:48

Edinburgh zoo also does great lanterns event in the evenings.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 05/10/2019 12:59

Premier inn fully booked for the nights in question Sad

If the Ice Sculpture fair still runs in York then that's lovely.

Travelodge edinburgh?

Frazzled2207 · 05/10/2019 13:24

A bit random but we went to Stratford one December which was quite christmassy and lovely. Saw a Shakespeare show too.

Lincoln is pretty and less crowded that York. Although York is lovely at Xmas.

York Ice Sculptures are now in February. I really would like to visit Edinburgh at Christmas time
