Has anyone any knowledge of these:

They look so lovely! But I’m not sure if a hybrid/mountain bike would be better. Budget is around £200 so an Isla bike is out the question.

Does anyone rate the Decathlon ones?

We got second hand Islabike for under £200. They were really very good.

We have had 5 children not all ours learn on a little decathlon bike. The quality was great

We liked Ridgeback bikes. Ds had 2 growing up, good resell value too.

I'd want to know how much it weighed. Just from the frame design, I'm guessing "a lot".

This Dawes is 3/4 of the price, and Dawes is a good, solid make.

My DS cycles 5 miles a day for school and has always had Carrera bikes. They're not the lightest or fanciest but he's on his 3rd now and they've only been passed on when outgrown.

Yes I wondered about the weight of them too. Lots of good suggestions thanks because I’ve never heard of Dawes or Ridgeback. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of second hand Islas come up in my area- they seem to get snapped up. I have no qualms about buying stuff second hand but just not sure about it when it’s from santa...

Look at frog bikes. They do a good hire scheme with the bike club as well if that would be something you are interested in? We pay about £15 a month for dd’s bike and swap it for the next size when she has outgrown it. The bikes are brand new and very light, similar to Isla bikes.

IkaBaar · 05/10/2019 12:05

I would go for a secondhand better bike. A secondhand Isla bike would be so much easier to ride than say a Ridgeback. We’ve had both and the difference in weight is huge. The Ridgeback didn’t stand up well to off-road either.

I doubt you’d get an 20 inch Islabike for under £200. Have a look at some of the newer ‘good’ makes like Frog, Hoy etc. They don’t hold their value anywhere near as well as Islabikes so will be cheaper secondhand. Frog bikes also come with touch up paint, so chips etc can be covered.

DS is a competitive cycle and really rates cube bikes. I think they are German?
We have never had a problem with them.

I got our DCs Islabikes from a FB group, they were all within collecting distance but for one we didn't take DS to try it, he tried a friend's the same size. However many are happy to ship.

Another vote for a second hand Islabike or Frog bike. We’ve had both & both have been excellent bikes. There are FB groups for both - search preowned islabikes for sale. There are often people willing to post. Or alternatively as Ciwirocks suggested you can use the bike club & pay monthly for a brand new frog bike then just swap it once it’s outgrown.
