How much goes in the stockings?

Just because I’m nosy Grin

Ours usually end up with about 30 items in, however it’s not really 30 presents because I separate stuff out so it fits. So for example for the littlest a small happyland set would be 5 stocking fillers or for the three year old a set of pj masks figures is 5 stocking fillers. I tend to put small toys/games/other items that I’d otherwise be giving as a proper present in rather than buying specific stocking fillers. Then they usually just get one present from us.

There’s quite a lot of edible stuff and useful stuff too, especially for the teens.

I never realised until I joined mn how very differently everybody does Christmas!

I do one for each of my children. 3 of them are grown up so they get make up, body stuff- shower gel etc. stationery, chocolates etc. I also do one for their partners. Apparently it's a highlight of Christmas. They love the childlikeness of it all. DP gets one too. DD (6) gets smiggle bits, (5for £5 etc). Bubble bath, chocolate coins, I spend about £10-15 on each one.

wildhairdontcare · 30/09/2019 19:26

In our house everyone gets a stocking. We all clamber into our bed to open them.

This years plans;

Dd2-chocolate orange, chocolate coins, unicorn purse, cinema voucher, posh popcorn, socks, bath bomb and lip balm.

Dd1-chocolate orange, chocolate coins, leather belt, cinema voucher, fentimans cola, socks, bath bomb and Mac lipstick.

DS- chocolate orange, chocolate coins, hat, cinema voucher, craft ale cans x 2, socks and pants.

DH- Dark ginger chocolate, flat cap, single malt whiskey.

Me- Chocolate cranberries, leather gloves, wild island gin.

In all honest things we would predominantly buy or pay for over the holidays anyway plus a few extra treats.

Haha batteries are a great idea!
My dc were 4 and 1 last year.
Eldest got
Stickers
Sugar mouse
Couple of Thomas trains and small track thing
Satsuma
Finding Dory flannel
Finding Dory socks from Pound land
Sticky Spider-Man thing
Matchbox car
Changing colour pen
Mini kaleidoscope
Hologram bookmark with his name.
All played with still.

Youngest only had a matching Nemo flannel, those plastic link toys, toy car and a baby toy phone, plus satsuma!
Looking forward to doing stockings this year.

Μine get 12 items in their stockings, they are small Inexpensive items. They can open their stockings in their beds to give us a bit of extra sleep then they all sit in our bed in the morning and show us what they have in them.

Curious2468 · 30/09/2019 20:44

I recon we average 15-20 presents in kids stockings here and like you I put smaller items from their general presents rather than putting in filler stuff. Usually stationary, card games, edibles, book, soft toy, bath stuff etc. Stockings are my favourite bit!

GordonBrockman · 30/09/2019 21:43

I love hearing how everyone else does it, do much variation Smile

Our stockings are on top of their presents which are in kind of rows in front of the fireplace. Presents from other people are under the tree. Stockings always have to be opened first. I’ve tried to move away from plastic tat

Isadora2007 · 30/09/2019 21:56

Ooops posted by accident
I’ve moved away from tat and now offer older “kids” a sweet or smelly stocking... smelly has toiletries or makeup or aftershave etc but could also include car fresheners or drawer liners etc too. Sweet is all sorts of goodies including pop tarts or cereals as well as sweets. Smaller kids get a wee mix of little things still but not tat- so this year will get a few sensory things like squishies and fiddle toys plus a few sweet treats and a few wee toys like spy gear or non-tie laces etc.

GetRid · 30/09/2019 21:57

I think stockings are without doubt the best bit of Christmas for kids. I spend lots on their stockings, more than their main present. Eg last year, DD got a camera in her stocking, and Sylvanian bits, but her main present from us was a board game (a pricey one not snakes and ladders!)

They get almost no tat, but instead things they need or that I know they'll play with.

They probably have around 15-20 items, and I probably spend £60 on each stocking, maybe more. But they do only get one or two pressies under the tree each!

Climbingwindmill · 30/09/2019 22:04

Father Christmas brings the stockings and they tend to have about 10 things: smellies, stationery, sweets, novelty item, book, clothes/accessories and a couple of more expensive presents they have asked for e.g lego set/particular toy.

They then get one ‘main’ present from us and quite a few from relatives.

myhandsareverycold · 30/09/2019 22:19

Great thread. My bestie told me two days ago she had finished her Christmas shopping

CakeNinja · 30/09/2019 22:25

Around 30ish things go into ours. They are pillowcases the dc decorated when they were little.
A selection of ‘proper presents’ and random but useful and fun things.
Because they write to Father Christmas and he only brings stockings and one main present, some of the things inside are proper presents.
I don’t buy tat things that will only be used for a day.
Similar to a pp, I basically buy things they like and then split it into what will fit in the stocking and what won’t. Everything else goes under the tree from us.
I’m now ashamed to say we go all out on the dc at Christmas.

CakeNinja · 30/09/2019 22:25

NOT not now! Totally alters the meaning Grin

jackparlabane · 30/09/2019 22:34

My kids were given beautiful stockings with their names on which they insist on using, but they are huge, so I have the opposite challenge of how to fill the bloody things up!

So the kids get a box of sugary cereal, bunch of books from Santa with reviews written by elves (which is why the books are clearly pre-read from the charity shop), a few sweets, a magazine, socks etc, and maybe a present which might entertain them until grandparents arrive around noon.
This year will include a ream of A4 paper and a pool noodle for dd.

DreamingofSunshine · 01/10/2019 10:55

I've got 2yo DS and DH. I don't give DS sweets and he's got several food allergies so I just put whatever toys fit in it, plus an orange.

We have personalised tapestry stockings from Jolly Red, they are beautiful but not very big.

DS has a santa sack for the other gifts.

DreamingofSunshine · 01/10/2019 10:59

These are the stockings. One year I made them for DH, DB and my DP.

How much goes in the stockings?
user1573334 · 05/10/2019 22:26

About 10-15.

And I think the absolute joy of plasters and fizzy drinks from children is underestimated by one poster! I am sure my younger 2 would be over the moon with character plasters (one asks for them to play with her dolls, the other is always hopefully asking for plasters for bumps) and the 12 year old would love a can of Barr fizzy drink, they don't get fizzy drinks very often.

BigmouseLittlehouse · 06/10/2019 06:59

We don’t really do stockings - mainly because I didn’t have them as a kid! We have pillowcases with all the presents in ( some of which are obviously small). Then just one present from me as a parent under the tree and anything from relatives ( although only 2 relatives give gifts!) . So everything comes from Santa. Then on Boxing Day we get what I guess is a few stocking presents. Have to say I didn’t initially give this much thought just copied what I had done as a child! I now regret it slightly as it makes it more difficult to explain why some children might not get anything at Xmas - my eldest has started quizzing me on this but I think his is because he is on the verge of not believing.

On the random stuff though one of my kids favourite gifts last year was a can of coke and some little rolls of sellotape Grin

TheGirlWhoLived · 06/10/2019 08:48

We do 25 gifts in the dd’s stockings, which ends up around £150-£200 - then under the tree they have one present from us. It’s how it was done for me as a child and I remember looking forward so much to the stocking!

Shitfuckoh · 06/10/2019 10:29

Mine varies each year. I usually do a few sweet treats (always a chocolate orange) few smaller toys (lego blind bags / hot wheels cars etc) new hat & glove set, soft toy out the top.

This year so far I have:

DS1 - 2 hot wheels cars, 3 x pack of 3 Thomas Minis. Digital Watch. Leappad game.
DS2 - 2 x Lego blind bags, Digital watch, Leappad game, pencils etc.
DS3 - Nothing yet :o

All stuff they'll use etc. We also do presents from Santa & then tree presents too - it's how it was done as a child for me.

yetanothernane · 06/10/2019 13:30

We've never done stockings before but thinking we will this year. Ds is 3 so understands more than previous years. Planning on giving him it on Xmas Eve, so PJs, some bath toys, sticker book, bubble bath (he loves the stuff!) Pants, socks, a story book for bedtime and some sweets or similar. Sort of thinking of doing one for our nephew (17) as he will be with us on Xmas Eve, but no idea what to get him!
