Christmas trees

We have a new house and I feel like our old tree is a bit battered so looking for a new one. We have nice high ceilings and a decent amount of space so can go quite big. Also want a thinner tree for the kitchen living area.

I was thinking pre-lit but what happens if the lights break?

Any recommendations for trees or any good offers at the moment?

Thanks!!

Yabu to discuss plastic tat imo....
Real all the way!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 29/09/2019 11:54

I have a plastic tat tree as I'd like to keep my cats alive. They're replaced very infrequently and the last one I got rid of is now my sisters so it's not in landfil. The environmental impact of real trees is not negligible either.
I have a prelit from Argos that I got very cheaply in the sales in January and I love it, no faffing around with fairy lights, a bulb may go but they can be replaced. Honestly last year was our first year and I hadn't realised how much I hated fighting with the fairly light until I didn't have to do it.

Chillisauceboss · 29/09/2019 12:09

@smartcarnotsosmartdriver why would a real tree kill a cat?

Deboucle · 29/09/2019 12:11

The environmental impact of real trees is not negligible either.

I'm not trying to change your mind or anything, but just for the benefit if anyone else who might be reading this thread and not know the facts, real trees are more environmentally friendly than fake - see here:

www.sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/is-it-more-environmentally-friendly-to-buy-a-fake-christmas-tree-or-a-real-one/

You can, however, mitigate the environmental impact of your fake tree by using it for at least 12 years before replacement.

Real trees kill cats? Do they?? Never heard this before.

My 2 are nearing 13 and we have a real tree every year- same for my mum, dads and countless other people I know who have cats!

Lou573 · 29/09/2019 12:17

Also wondering how Christmas trees kill cats? I’ve had real trees and cats for at least a decade and my mother four times that, all cats unharmed by the tree.

Deboucle · 29/09/2019 12:19

My cats have also survived 5 years of real trees. I guess if you were worried about them eating it though it might be different? Mine have never really bothered with the tree (unless I hang cat toys baubles too close to the bottom)

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 29/09/2019 13:16

It really does depend on the cat, the oil from the tree is considered mildly toxic and the needles themselves can cause damage if swallowed. I have 2 young cats that I don't trust not to eat the tree. I'd rather not take the risk.

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/09/2019 13:46

I wouldn't trust a real tree around our 2 cats either, they are indoor cats and I no longer have flowers or house plants due to one eating them (I do have cat grass though).

Windydaysuponus · 29/09/2019 13:49

I have had dcats and real trees my whole 40 +years. No deaths as yet.
Ddogs never bother either.

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/09/2019 13:52

Balsam hill are always popular on mumsnet , john Lewis and M&S have lively ones online at moment. I think the prelit ones have a long lifespan, prob a guarantee with the balsam ones.

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/09/2019 13:53

lovely not lively trees!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 29/09/2019 14:22

@Mrsfussypants1 yup, one of mine eats plants and flowers too, on the rare occasion someone buys me a bunch I have to watch them like a hawk and shut them in the bathroom overnight, not worth the stress with a real tree.

everythingisginandroses · 29/09/2019 15:38

What strange cats you people have Xmas Confused

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/09/2019 15:53

androse both our cats are very sweet natured and down to earth, but being indoor cats (they are FIV adoptions and can't go out) they are curious about everything indoors, despite some serious catfication to our home and loads of stimulation and playtime. A real tree is never going to happen in our home.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 29/09/2019 15:59

They're strange and so lovely, if I have to sacrifice foliage to keep them safe and happy then so be it.

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/09/2019 16:04

Sorry OP, this has turned into a thread about plastic and cats. I hope you find your tree.

DreamingofSunshine · 29/09/2019 16:18

I have a prelit fake tree from M&S, very happy with it. I've had it for 3 years and no plans to get rid of it. If I were to get rid of a fake tree, I donate it to charity.

Starlight456 · 29/09/2019 16:24

Gosh don’t ask here . You should have a bare stick before you should replace it .

I got a good deal last year on a tree at Argos they had a 25% off on all trees or similar

Floralnomad · 29/09/2019 17:39

I have a Balsam Hill Fraser fir , 7’ prelit and it’s beautiful . We don’t have real trees because I don’t like the smell , my dd doesn’t like bugs , dh has to have symmetry and I’m not having needles anywhere near my dogs feet .

dorothysredshoes · 29/09/2019 21:10

We bought a tall but narrow tree from John Lewis several years ago

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/09/2019 14:33

Love my Balsam Hill one. And plan to have it for many years!
