What can I buy my grandad??

I'm really stuck for what to buy my grandad. He is 82, but very active. He has loads of clothes, doesn't drink or like sweets. He doesn't read, likes to potter in the garden but I've bought him garden things for the past few years.
My nan died this year so hes on his own and lives a few hours from me. I'd like to buy a thoughtful gift but haven't got a clue.
Any ideas??

what about an experience? Something you can do together? A cookery class? Or make your own sausages/bacon? The Indytute have got lots, so have Not on the High Street. So you’ll have a lovely memory of a day together and he won’t feel like he’s got nobody to go with.

The best gift would probably be time spent with you, take him to a garden centre for lunch and a potter.

How about a tablet like a kindle fire? Or DVDs of old television shows and/or films he used to like? Or a voucher for the two of you to go for something to eat together or look around a museum/place of interest?

How about a subscription to a gardening magazine?

If you could because you can make the time I would put a couple of things in place that you could do together eg lunch out together and visit to a garden , cinema trip with drinks or tea afterwards

A lovely framed photo of him and his late wife

Something practical like a regular delivery of meals

A don’t think a photograph is a good idea at all, sorry. Someone I know who was bereaved at the same time has had to remove all photos, screensavers, etc, as too painful. But perhaps others would react differently. Experience day seems good.

Does he feed the birds in his garden?
One of my relatives does (similar age) and it costs a fortune. One year I got them some new bird feeders and a trug full of different bags of bird feed. It lasted weeks and they were really pleased with it. It's such a simple thing but gave them a lot of pleasure as they love watching all the birds in their garden.

Outdoor garden thermometer barometer thingy. If he doesn’t already have one!

Alexa or a tablet if he can use the net and has broadband.
Gardening voucher and take him out there for the day with lunch in the cafe.
Trip to somewhere he likes in his youth, like the seaside where he holidayed with his parents as a child.
A raised gardening bed if his back is dodgy.
It’s hard to buy for someone who has everything!

Hamper from Betty's tea room maybe

Hecksonaplane · 29/09/2019 19:55

My grandad loves his bird bath in the garden or a camera you can put in the bird house - I can't find a link to one I used.

But he also loves a wander and lunch at the local garden center as prev mentioned

MonnaLisa · 29/09/2019 19:59

my dad is 80 and active and I bought him a fitbit and he loves it and he is so proud that he walks 8-10,000 steps every day.

I’m buying my grandad socks and then making a donation to our local Coast Watch group because he’s ex-navy so has some links to the sea. I tend to buy him nicer versions of things he buys himself like candles/shower gel/biscuits.

Soupmaker

CornishCreation · 29/09/2019 21:39

Take him to a photographer and get some family portraits together or have a photo of his late wife made to a canvas or a cushion.

doodlejump1980 · 29/09/2019 21:39

Birdbox camera?

Rainbowx2 · 30/09/2019 07:29

Thanks everyone! I'm thinking maybe a nice photo of him and my nan. She had hundreds of photos of everyone and he hasn't taken them down, but I'm not sure if it might upset him, first Christmas without her. Maybe the bird feeder / bath or the themometre thing might be safer idea.
But thanks great suggestions🙂
