First proper bike?

Want to get 4yo ds his first proper bike for Christmas. He's amazing on the balance bike so our plan is to just go for it for a bike without stabilisers.

Any offers I should know of out keep an eye out for?

No offer that I know.of as such, but I'd get a bit which is as lightweight as possible / you can afford.

Frog, Islabike, squish are all good. Think there are some Facebook pages selling second-hand Islabikes for example. They are expensive, but should hold their value, so you can always sell it on again in a couple of years.

Some for typos - bike not bit!

We discovered that weight is everything. DD was awesome on balance bike but first real bike was too heavy so if she wobbled she lacked strength to right it and fell off.

After 2 months of failed attempts we bought a second hand Islabike (which was sadly still ££) and she was riding in 15 minutes.

Frog are slightly cheaper but lightweight children's bikes but if budget won't stretch to that look for lightest one you can afford would be my top tip.

You can get really good second hand Specialized ones on ebay. They're really light.

My best advice is to look for a second hand bike. My dc have needed a new bike every couple of years, despite some of them not getting a great lot of use. When I think of how much we have spent on them and how much we have got back selling them on, in really good condition, I could cry!

We bought second hand isla bikes.

Frog are brilliant.

Sleeplease · 28/09/2019 20:16

Islabike for sure, so lightweight, my slight 3 year old was peddling (no stabilisers) a week after we gave it to her. If we'd gone for a heavier one I don't think she'd have had a hope!

Another vote for a isla or frog.
There is a big second hand market for both - I've seen specalised Facebook groups for both, and adverts on gumtree.

Definitely islabike. My two year old was off riding properly without stabilisers within half an hour of us buying it.

YYY to Islabike. I’ve been involved in kids cycle coaching, from “learn to pedal” type classes for preschoolers, to racing. Young children are easily put off cycling by heavy, cheap bikes. When you are only say -25 kg - then an extra kg of bike makes a big difference!

Look at Islabike and Frog, both have “Preloved” FB Pages (look at their proper websites to work out what size/model yiu need first). They will retain a lot of their value, I promise. If you can’t make the upfront investment, then you can lease Frog bikes from The Bike Club.

Of the 2 though, I’d say Islabikes are better proportioned for very young children.
