How does this sound?

Our boys will be 4 & 7 at Christmas. We have lots of toys and have realised not a huge number are really pleased with. This year they are asking for bikes, so we were thinking of getting each of them:

Bike
Helmet
Set of books
Board game or puzzle

Stockings will include: crayons, UNO/Top Trumps, mini Lego set, baking apron, periscope or binoculars, new swim goggles, slime, mug w/ hot choc sachet (they both need new mugs).

They will get presents from other people. They/we are suggesting Guess Who, Labyrinth, Playmobil, craft stuff, football kit, Kappla blocks. They will probably get most of these things.

Does that sound okay, or a bit boring? We have normally bought them a few toys from us (although never huge amounts), but decent bikes are pricey and we’d rather buy them things they will use. So, yes, am I having an irrational wobble, or will this make their gift piles a bit dull?

TIA

Nothing remotely dull or boring here. Sounds absolutely awesome. Lucky kids Smile

They sound like lucky boys!
Bikes can be expensive enough on their own so anything in addition to that is good..... plus if you think about it, they'll probably play with the bikes and not much else if that's what they've been really after.

That sounds lovely and very generous. Any child who found that haul to be substandard would need a serious reality check.

Happyspud · 26/09/2019 16:17

God if you think that’s not enough there’s something wrong with the world.

That sounds like an epic haul.

MovinOnUp · 26/09/2019 17:21

That sounds lovely :)

Thanks ladies. I thought it would be okay but was just questioning myself.

I realise they are incredibly lucky children. They only really get bought anything at Christmas and birthdays, but looking back through my list, they will still get at least 10 presents each under the tree, plus their stockings, which feels plenty. We have tried to work with them this year to create lists of things that will actually get played with (grandparents tend to respond to whims, which end up languishing on a toy box!).

I think you've got the balance just right. You have chosen good quality well thought out gifts. Your children are going to have a magical Christmas. And you could be describing me as a grandparent, I could easily go crackers buying everything. But I've been very good, this year it's playmobil (as requested) and few practical bits like space themed wellies and umbrella, books, pjs and torch.

It sounds lovely OP.

They will love it.

That sounds perfect. What lovely, considered gifts! They are lucky boys.

highinthesky · 26/09/2019 22:38

Out of interest, what do you plan to get them next year? Set the bar high and expectations are only going to follow suit.

Equimum · 26/09/2019 23:07

highinthesky they never have heaps of gifts. I think because of the bikes, I was having a wobble over whether they would have much to play with on a Christmas Day, but I think those things will come from others. As for next year, I don’t know what they’ll get, but it’ll probably cost less than this year, especially for the older one whose bike is costing a fair amount (it’ll be passed down though, so not particularly p other about it). We don’t allow them to have personal electronics etc yet, so for now, bikes will remain the biggest presents.

Sounds about right.

PhantomErik · 28/09/2019 10:32

Sounds ideal!

We've been cutting back on 'stuff' for the last few years & the kids have still had a wonderful time with lots of new things.

It's so much better than looking at piles of stuff on Christmas Day & wondering where on earth it's all going to go!
