DS turns 4 at Christmas time. He mainly plays with vehicles, and already has loads of trains/brio, fire engines, tractors, diggers etc you name it. He does play with his kitchen, sometimes, but has everything he could possibly want for that.

He doesn't have a great imagination and tends to just act out things that have happened in real life with his vehicles complete with a lot of sound effects (he may or may not be on the spectrum).

No idea what to get him for Christmas...and birthday! Any new vehicle would be very popular for a while, but he has everything.

What about something like this car park? Still cars but at least somewhere to park them Smile.

MinervaVause · 16/09/2019 20:31

How about Magformers? This one is a vehicle one so he can build his cars but it can be used to build other things too. You can add other sets to them easily. My ds2 got some when he was around the same age, he’s 9 now and they still come out often and he’ll build some pretty cool stuff with them.

The Design & Drill range might appeal to him, there's lots of vehicle based ones as well as a robot, toolkit and work bench . This monster truck might be fun to put together and take apart.

Thanks both!!! Both good suggestions thanks Smile he does have a little wooden garage but it's only two storeys, I think a big one like that would go down well!

Also like the magnaformers idea. I hadn't heard of that. I was thinking of Junior knex too as he's really interested in how things work. He's not shown much interest in building eg with duplo so far, but in fairness we don't have the best selection of duplo. He prefers me or DH to build his wooden tracks for him though, I hope he does get into building!

The Kid K'nex is great @tempnamechange98765 I've bought it for various 3 - 5 year olds and it's always gone down really well Smile.

Tonka truck? The steel ones last for generations.

Hot wheels set?

My DS is 4 and a quarter and really loves games at the mo - Orchard Toys games, Guess Who, connect 4, pick up sticks, Dobble. Planning on getting Mousetrap for Christmas.

I know you say he doesn’t like duplo but Lego Juniors is great - doesn’t require much imagination as it’s not so much blocks but more specific pieces to make a specific thing, eg a whole motorcycle body as one piece, add the wheels, boom.

tempnamechange98765 · 16/09/2019 20:54

Wonderful thank you, I'd never actually heard of Lego Juniors! Just googled and there's a couple of £10 ish sets I think he'd like.

I need a big cull of all his vehicles as he has so many (eg about 4 different fire engines!) and he rarely plays with them.

Glow in the dark magic tracks?

My dc enjoyed a battery train to go on brio track, and also a normal train with their name on.

The playmobil fire engine was also a hit.

BeanBag7 · 16/09/2019 21:07

Lego or playmobil for sure

I was wondering about a play Mobil vehicle like the camper van, it does look cool! He got the play Mobil Park last year when he was just 3 but it's had absolutely zero attention except once when he pretended the fence was a train, and another time when he pretended the play ground with the slide was a digger...! (I say he doesn't have much imagination, his symbolic play is pretty good). But what puts me off play Mobil is he seems to have zero interest in the figures. He has Octonauts figures as he went through a big stage of loving that, and whilst the Octopod got a lot of play time, the figures were hardly touched.

He almost seems to just pretend "people", my sister just brought him a toy campervan back from her holiday and he has been "pretending" she and her partner are in it...

I second magformers or the magnetic tiles. My DS is currently being assessed for ASD and he plays with his magformers a lot.

scrivette · 16/09/2019 22:26

Boats (Playmobil are good) for the bath.

doodlejump1980 · 16/09/2019 23:03

Playmags?
Story dice?

livingthegoodlife · 17/09/2019 09:18

Also recommend magformers. They really grow with the child. For example my four year old plays but builds simple models. My seven year old build huge complex models.

Look for them in tkmaxx or in the sales as they are quite expensive and the rrp is crazy.
