Good board game for 9 year old

For the last few years I've got DD a board game that we can all play as a family, we already have snakes and ladders, two versions of monopoly, frustration, and a hatchimals board game. Any suggestions for what I can get for this year that has been a hit with your kids? Preferably something without a million tiny pieces that takes forever to build (I'm looking at you, Mouse Trap).

Another vote for cluedo. Uno is very good, though it’s a card game rather than a board game. Ludo requires a bit of patience - it’s not for a very impulsive child but it has a subtle strategy to it.

Takenoko
Labyrinth
Dragon wood
Rummikub
Kingdomino

The other thing to consider is if there are any game cafes near you - there’s one in my town and one half an hour away, so you might get lucky and find one locally.

They’re often great for a wet afternoon - coffee, cake and try several different games to see what you/your dc like.

Tension.
Charades for kids

My 9 year old absolutely loves Scotland Yard. This game has got everyone hooked but not really for younger siblings.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 17/09/2019 00:17

My 10 year olds favourites are Labyrinth and Scotland Yard
Whole family enjoy both of them (although my 90 year old mother in law hasn’t quite got the hang of Scotland Yard yet and just happily travels around London on the bus sight seeing!)

Rummikub
Has been a very firm favourite in our family, the cousins get VERY competitive about it.
Interestingly I was at a car boot a few weeks ago with loads of games (donated) and about 4 people asked if we had Rummikub.

If you want a fun family game to play together we recently bought Soundiculous to take on holiday.

It’s basically a set of cards with words on and you have to make the sounds - a bit like charades but you sit on your hands and just use your mouth!

Such a simple idea but it had us all in stitches.

Tension is fab Tension

Also votes for Dobble and Sushi Go.

Plus Rhino Hero if you child doesn't cry when the game ends/tower falls down.

Bluebell9 · 17/09/2019 11:10

Catan junior is really good fun
Uno is a hit in our family, Uno extreme is even better!

SleepyPaws · 17/09/2019 12:01

22Giraffes · 17/09/2019 14:01

Great thread, am getting loads of ideas, thanks all!

9 and 10yo DC here and Carcassone, Sushi Go and Exploding Kittens are our faves. Though we do love labyrinth too

4forkssake · 19/09/2019 09:16

Scotland Yard is good

INeedNewShoes · 19/09/2019 09:37

I didn't realise Scotland Yard was still on the go!

I've had it sitting on my games shelves for years and have never played it! It was my brother's when we were kids (30 years ago!).

I'll give it a go next time I've got my games friends around.

Is it interesting for adults too or is it really aimed at children?

4forkssake · 19/09/2019 14:12

We all like Scotland Yard. Young kids may need a bit of help but it's a good family game for adults & kids.

BrightonBB · 19/09/2019 18:22

Would you suggest Scotland Yard Junior or Scotland Yard? Thanks

clucky3 · 19/09/2019 18:40

Another vote for Scotland Yard (my 7 year old can play the standard version)

We also like:

Ticket to ride
Pandemic
Exploding kittens
Cluedo
Star player - great for football fans

4forkssake · 19/09/2019 21:19

Didn't know you could get a Scotland Yard junior. My youngest has been playing since he was about 6 with some help so I'd just go with the normal version.
