Stocking fillers for grandparents

Abouttime1978 · 16/09/2019 12:29

We've got one set of grandparents (mid seventies to mid eighties in age) coming to stay for Christmas.

So they will need stockings like the rest of us.

So far I've got:

Grandma:

Hand cream
Notebook
Book
Favourite chocolate

Grandad

Book
Favourite chocolate

They live in a different country and are going home the day after Boxing Day so ideally small/perishable items that won't add to much to their luggage!

socks? hankies? hand gel? Nice pen, puzzle book. Spectacles wipes, folding shopping bag. As a 70 year old myself, these are all things I would appreciate.

Kiel’s do lovely mini creams for dehydrated skin. Small atomiser and cloths for cleaning glasses. Nylon shopping bag that folds up into a small pouch. Little socks that fit inside slippers.
Palma Violets or violet creams. Mini chocolate reindeer. Tiny Christmas cake . Scented sheets for putting in their case or atomised line. Spray. Mini puzzles for homeward journey.

We have found the 20/25cl bottles of wine, puzzle book, novel, nice biscuits (florentines especially popular), pretty paper napkins, bars of chocolate (which they like), fudge, posh marshmallows, scissors have all gone down well.

Best received grandparent/great aunt etc stocking filler that I’ve done has been a personalised glasses cleaning cloth, with a photo of the grandkids on.

I did it on eBay - was much cheaper than many other places - and the quality was great. Cost them was about £2.50, there seem to be 2 or 3 on there that are about £3 now so guessing it was one of them - didn’t recognise either of the listings. At the time it was cheaper to go through the eBay page than their website. There were two sizes - seem to think it was worth the extra 30p or similar to get the slightly bigger cloth - not much of a difference but enough to make it feel a bit more substantial.

They were all in awe as had never come across photos being printed on fabric. Also meant they always had a photo of the grandkids with them at all times without needing to carry photos with them as they always had their glasses and this glasses case with them and alwaûs had a cleaning cloth in the glasses case anyway.

Think I teamed them with a mini cleaning spritz and mini glasses screwdriver to get 3 related stocking presents.

I wouldn’t get seeds or liquids or scissors if they are flying - they might be banned

My mum is nearly 70 and her favourite gift recently has been a spare mobile phone battery pack for her handbag.

Also suggest:

Socks. Either novelty or beautiful quality
Small cuddly toy - everyone loves a cute cuddly toy and they can always leave them with the grandkids
Bag of chocolate coins each

You have to put an obligatory satsuma inside as well

RuthW · 17/09/2019 15:59

Off to buy a few personalised glasses cloths. Thank you.

That's so cute. We dont do stockings for adults but a few years ago I did do stocking for my mum and dad just for fun because I couldnt think of a big present to get them.

I knitted my dad a scarf and my mum some gloves. There are loads of delicious things in the shops at christmas time like mini christmas cakes, stollen bites, marzipan fruits, interesting flavours of fudge, crisps etc.

sueelleker · 22/09/2019 09:46

Until he went off them, I used to put a Terry's chocolate orange in my husband's stocking.

I know I’m a bit late to the party (but still plenty of time until Christmas!), but are they from the UK originally? Is there anything they miss or anything ‘British’ you can get them if they’re from another country? I’m thinking marmite, English breakfast tea, English mustard etc.
