I'm contemplating buying my 6 year old DTD's for Christmas. Does anyone have any recommendations? I had been considering Kindle Fires but keep reading that they are slow and cumbersome. Budget is up to £150 each. Thanks

Damn, thought this was about the confectionery --- sorry OP, no experience of non-Apple products here. For stuff like that though I'd wait to see what black Friday deals come up.

We have kindle fire, the large 10" screen one. It's fine. Good for watching things on, comes with a two year warranty and a good kids rubber cover.

I don't feel the need to have anything else. I haven't noticed it being slow or cumbersome.

Both DC have a kindle. They are very slow. DC use them once a week for games or YouTube and I spend about 30 minutes messing with it to get it to work. They also hold about 4 apps. Imo they are rubbish. We are gettting them new ones this year.
In the defence of the kindles they are about 3 or 4 years old.

Me too, LizzieMacQueen. Beat it til your arms hurt, burningly hurt.

My top tip is get crash covers for the tablets because they will get dropped.

Our 6 year old got a kids fire (8) last year and adores it. Her little sister wants one this year. It's not as fast as an ipad (because it costs a fraction of the price) but it's fast enough for kids. It's really easy to lock down and set limits on too.

I have the latest 10" Fire tablet and I love it. My husband has one, too. It's not slow at ALL and I have lots of apps on it. I also watch movies on it all the time and have never had any lagging. I highly recommend.

Dts has kindle fires they were rubbish they much preferred our iPad. We bought them chrome books for their 7th birthday as they were starting to need them for school apps and research, can't fault them.

We have the cheapest fires with a bounce proof case. How fast does a tablet for a 6 year old need to be? You can stick a memory card in for more storage. I dont think there is much else out there that is not much more expensive.

I work in app development for a living. What kind of devices are your kids used to using? If it's a hand me down/borrow iPhone/iPad, they'll find the Kindle slow in comparison. The interface is clunky and difficult, and games often take an age to load (each time, not just on first install).

For me, it's less about the storage space (which you can increase), it's more about the processor speed. The screen isn't the best quality but ok for little one.

I looked at one for my 5yo but decided to let him use my 3 year old tablet instead (in a VERY chunky protector case!)

(My tablet was a 3 year old iPad!)

DH has an Amazon fire which is only just starting to slow down after several years, but he loves it, so am getting him a new one this year. For me, nothing beats my iPad, I love it.

I agree with an iPad. Even if it's a second hand older model x
