I've found similar posts really helpful in the past..... which toys did you buy last year which are still being played with? The age of children might be helpful to guide others with their shopping too....

My DD(3) (but 4 at Xmas) has grown into the Barbies I bought her last year which she was disinterested in at that point. Also, her plastic glasses and handbag are also still proving to be hits...

My DS(6) is still playing with his Lego and playmobil but it really is the vehicles which are more of a hit than the police station...

Dc1 was 3 last Christmas, now 4. The playmobil comes out every day as do the dinosaurs. The train table gets a lot of use too.

Of the stuff that Dc2 got (6 months at last Christmas), the Grimms rainbow gets a lot of play from both her and her brother. She also likes the wooden animals she got.

DS (4.5 last Christmas):

Wooden train track (has been played with loads since he got it at age 2ish; he gets new bits each year)

Marble run

A swim float which he was very cross to receive, for some reason, but has insisted on taking it every time we go swimming since

Not played with so much: board games (though his same-aged cousin loves them when he comes round), Hot Wheels (too hard for him to operate at the moment)

DD (almost 2 last Christmas) didn't get many toys, but has fairly consistently played with Duplo for the past 6 months or so. She got Play-Doh which they've both enjoyed.

MyIncapableOne dd1 is obsessed with collecting rocks too!

We got the National Georgraphic one off Amazon, it comes with a reasonable quantity of grit of different grades and some raw gemstones to tumble, and you can buy extras. I think it was around £35.

It does tumble for weeks at a time, and is noisy. We leave it going in the garage.

Dd nearly 2 got happy land farm and a baby born doll and pram, toy bottles, bath and potty - she plays with them every day. Also got her a second hand easel in the summer as her bday just before Xmas and she loves that.
This year she's getting a wooden kitchen and accessories, toy food etc.

Ds10 got wwe game for PlayStation which he plays most days, he also got an expensive punch bag and the novelty of that soon wore off 🙄 and ds8 got Harry Potter Lego which he still plays with most days too! Oh and a magnetic captain America shield that he loves - big marvel fan!

My marble run (IT'S NOT THE DCS')
Snap Circuits
Various Orchard games
Dressing up stuff
Play tent
Duplo (DS is 7 but he can't manage the regular Lego due to motor problems)
These have all remained favourites over more than 1 year.

MyIncapableOne · 13/09/2019 22:27

Stompythedinosaur Thanks! I’ve just checked and it’s only available from America at the moment so is about £50 including postage. Can you put random stones that they pick up on the way home from school in it?!

PrincessScarlett · 13/09/2019 22:34

Wooden train set - had 4 years and played with almost daily
Trampoline
Lego
Superhero figures
Barbie dolls
Happyland

Stompythedinosaur · 13/09/2019 22:41

Yes, dd1 polishes lots of random stones.

BeanBag7 · 14/09/2019 07:54

2 and a half year old

  • wooden play kitchen
  • Melissa and Doug doorbell house
  • ragdoll and pushchair
AnnaMariaDreams · 14/09/2019 07:56

Playmobil history - pyramid, Roman amphitheatre and ship plus figures
Still played with daily by 7 year old DS

TheWashingMachine · 14/09/2019 08:04

I think it depends on your children, mine aged 7 and 8 love soft toys. DD has been playing with her doctor's kit since 3 and DS has had a toolkit - a proper one since age 5. Also swords and guns have enduring popularity. Also the puppet show door frame thing from GLT has endured and the kitchen and tea set and fake food.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 15/09/2019 09:15

DD (6 in December) still plays with her Barbie's, Hatchimals collectibles (so much better than the big Hatchimals!), Pomsie and Build a Bear plus various outfits.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 15/09/2019 12:45

dd1 (10 almost 11) loves her funko pop figures, ds games and build a bear soft toys. plus notebooks and pens.

dd2 (7) loves her lol dolls, shopkins dolls, little figures (shopkins/hatchimals/Disney ones) and busy books.

both love fleece blankets from Primark, little signs for their bedroom and a snowglobe which I buy them each year :) oh and lunch bags, pencil cases and backpacks - we replace at Christmas rather than in the new school year.

going with more if the same this year for Christmas.

Millie2013 · 15/09/2019 20:11

DD(6) loves notebooks and anything crafty, I think these are her most played-with gifts. She loves smiggle tat! :D
"Brownies" books- she keeps going back to these
Build a bear anything
This year, she's asked for a CD player

ValiaH · 16/09/2019 00:17

Wooden train set, lego, Grimms 12 piece rainbow, building boards and (cheaper, generic) semicircles, rag dolls and beds, creatimber wobble board, ride on Thomas the Tank, Holztiger animals and Tegu magnetic blocks are all used here at least weekly by my 3 aged 7, 4.5 and 2.5 years. From previous years, melissa and doug folding castle, John Lewis wooden farm, wooden kitchen, playmobil 123 house, Grapat Magos, and Grapat Tomtens are used really frequently too.
