What to get a 1 year old for birthday/Christmas?

It's my little boys 1st birthday on December 23rd and then Christmas more or less straight after... what can I get him?
I'm also pregnant with baby boy no2 and I'm due on December 23rd (I think I can only produce Christmas babies) I'm planning on buying everything in advance and do wrapping early ect so it's not too much nearer the time, I've no idea what 1 year olds are into 😂
Any ideas how I can possibly plan this out and anyone have gift ideas... I know he won't even remember this birthday/Christmas but I still want to make it special for him

It was my son’s first Christmas last year, he was 10 months. I got him a little star activity centre, learn with me zebra walker, That’s Not My books and other things. Stocking wise I put Ella’s Kitchen puffs, a toy trumpet, stuff like that. He will likely get loads from others too.

My son’s birthday is a few weeks after Christmas so I asked for money from family to buy outdoor toys such as a swing/slide, sand/water table. My house was full of stuff after Christmas I didn’t want another load of stuff for his birthday 😂

Scuttlebug or a similar ride on is good. I liked the scuttlebug as it folds flat so you can take it everywhere!

DD’s birthday is also right before Christmas. I got her toy fruit and veg for her birthday, then Father Christmas got her an Ikea toy kitchen for Christmas. This year she’ll be 3 so getting her dolls and furniture for her birthday, the dolls house for Christmas Day.

Meant to add, I remember that at that age she was very into anything she could push or pull along.

TeaForDad · 12/09/2019 10:22

We put lots of DDs favourite soft toys wrapped up in her stocking with a few presents and she loved finding them.

She didn't need anything and got loads from family

For the future I would do a second birthday or half birthday in the summer- on the same day but June instead of December. June half birthday for friends and family to give presents and celebrate. I’m a January birthday and wish that I’d been able to do that. Then cards only from family on the actual birthday and cake maybe and a small gift from you guys only.

Brilliant some good ideas here!
@AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo (brilliant username by the way) he's just started pushing & pulling now so that's a good idea
I just want to be able to buy stuff now and he will hopefully be into it by the time his birthday and Christmas comes along lol

@Isadora2007 I live the half birthday idea... I could maybe just do a little half birthday party for both boys in summer, hire a bouncy castle or something similar 😊

Marzipan, that's a lovely idea!
My LO got a Fisher Price school bus for his birthday last week & I've gotten him some extra little people to put away for Christmas & I'm thinking about getting the school house.

We have a Christmas-time birthday here too. He’ll be 7 this year! We never went down the half birthday route (we have a summer baby too), but when he was small, we always bought a big present at Easter - usually something for the garden like a sandpit or slide.

DelurkingAJ · 13/09/2019 08:12

Something for the spring if you've got space to store it. Like a baby swings and slide? Mine adored his Fisher Price push along affair and I’m sure I got it in a Sainsbury’s toy sale around October.

Stocking - stuff they’ll need. Character pyjamas, socks and pants appear every year for mine. A set of cutlery etc.

BeanBag7 · 14/09/2019 08:05

Books are great for a 1YO.
Touchy feely ones like the "that's not my" range, story books for bed time, lift the flap. My DD loved the Julia Donaldson board books at that age - Fox's Socks, Postman Bear etc.
Toys for the garden - Fisher price Rocker, cosy coupe, little tikes activity gym

angelopal · 14/09/2019 08:15

Maybe stock up on things for a few months down the line. Duplo, mega blocks, cars you pull back and let go. Peg board puzzles, a sit on push along, books with no flaps. These are all things my just turned 2 year old has been playing with for a few months.

Some brilliant ideas 😊

I bought DD a large cow wheelybug for her 1st birthday - lasted until we gave it away when she wasn't far off 10! Was in great condition.

WeeM · 15/09/2019 02:01

A nice copy of Twas the Night before Xmas-given for birthday just in time Smile. We got ours a nice traditional teddy bear from hamleys....still a fave many years on.

WeeM · 15/09/2019 02:02

Happyland stuff is great too

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/09/2019 17:48

First up, I'd start as you mean to go on re birthday presents vs Christmas presents, which one will involve a 'big' present etc. otherwise it's going to be a very expensive and difficult time of year in the future!

For one year old presents though, wooden walkers with blocks, scuttlebug, activity tables, and anything that has flashing lights and sounds will go down well.

Also, if you're buying a stocking that you plan to use for years, do not get a really big one! They are much easier to fill when their little, less so later on...

ImportantWater · 17/09/2019 17:54

DS, also a winter baby, got a Fisher Price garage for his first birthday, he ended up playing with it loads over the year. Also the Bee Bop Band musical instruments set, which were also a big hit, a fire engine, tractor and the school bus (these were not all from us, but Fisher Price did very well out of him that year!).

ImportantWater · 17/09/2019 17:56

Oh, he also had the Battatt wooden activity cube.

Ribeebie · 17/09/2019 18:27

Our DS is one a few weeks before Xmas this year too so looking for inspiration! My parents have got him happyland and a toot toot airport. And so far we have got him an Asda kitchen, a little wooden trike and some books. My Nan has got him a bit of duplo
