@INeedNewShoes my boxing day hamper contains:

Paracetamol (for the hangover)
Several gallons of Coke (see above)
Ferrero rochet and Pringles (lazy nutrition)
Stretchy/slouchy pjs (for the bloating)
Bubble bath (so I can stew in my meat sweats and ignore the excited squeals from the small ones)
Takeaway menu and about £30 (because I'm too lazy to cook)

HairyChinChin · 11/09/2019 20:24

No idea how you all afford all these new traditions.

Monr0e · 11/09/2019 20:50

I have done a 1st December box for the last 10 years, since ds was 3. We dont put loads in but things that will be used throughout December and we would be buying anyway, this way it's just a nice treat to welcome in the festive season.

It varies slightly each year but mainly includes
Advent calendars
Christmas pi's
Christmas jumper - school always has a Christmas jumper day
Letter to Santa kit
Hot choc sachets, mini marshmallows and squirty cream
A Christmas book each although this is getting harder now DS is 13
A gingerbread house building set, something for them to fo together

We always hosted my in laws on Christmas eve so never had the time to make it very special which is why we started the box on the 1st instead and this way everything is used and enjoyed throughout the month, not just one night

I don’t do a dec 1st box as such but I have a box stashed in the attic that gets pulled out around then.

I stock up on crafts in the sales, so there’s baubles to paint, bags for cookies and other treats that we’ll make, Christmas fabrics, and cards for the dc to write to classmates. I think it’s important to focus on giving in the run up to Christmas.

I have a mismatched collection of Christmas crockery that we use throughout dec. if you are trying to build up a collection maybe you could put a few new bits in each year. We seem to get a gift of some random plate/mug each year and even though nothing matches it looks cheerful and fun

We have a collection of books for December too. There used to be dvds and cds but Netflix and Spotify have taken over. I have some scented candles and oil blends in there too.

I’m not keen on the consumerism of the dec1st/Christmas Eve boxes. Most of our things get recycled year to year and they’re exciting just because they haven’t seen them for a year. But their familiarity is part of the charm too. We had a really skint Christmas one year so I’m inclined to keep a rein on spends traditions in case we have a year where we can’t keep up.

Dec 1st boxes make fat more sense than Xmas eve boxes to me. Like a PP I don’t have a dec 1st box- but rather things that are brought out over the weeks before Xmas gradually like throws and pjs and socks and decorations and mugs and crockery etc. That way it’s spread over the festive period- never seen the point in Xmas pjs for one night!!!

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 11/09/2019 23:57

Christmas pasta from Lakeland.

You’re welcome.

Runs for cover and hides from all the horrified and offended Wink

Mrsmiddle · 12/09/2019 14:01

We do a 1st Dec box! Xmas pj's so they wear them lead up to Christmas, bit pointless after really. Crafts, hot chocolate, Santa's letter stuff advent calendars so pretty much what you've already got

welshgirl666 · 12/09/2019 15:28

Thanks to everyone who has given me extra ideas!! (Smile)

Not sure why some people feel the need to comment on something that doesn't interest them! Lol!

It doesn't cost any extra really as it's all stuff we already have from previous years or would be buying anyway. Its actually better value to get a months use out of stuff rather than do it xmas eve.

Mostly though I love christmas and its something fun to do!!! (Smile)

WTF!!! And I love Christmas.

HamiltonBentley · 12/09/2019 16:12

This is the first I've heard about 1st December boxes but I love the idea of it. My family always does Christmas PJs, advent calendars etc around the start of Dec & we always have a little present that DM hides in the tree for us on Christmas Eve (I'm 26 & still love this Blush) but to me, 1st Dec boxes make more sense than Christmas Eve boxes. I think in mine & DHs I will put:

  • Christmas PJs
  • Advent calendars
  • Christmas mug & nice hot chocolate
  • Chocolate Orange
  • Christmas Candle

It will be a nice tradition to continue when DD is here next Christmas.

12feasts · 12/09/2019 17:24

Christmas book?

StrictlyComeMarie · 12/09/2019 18:35

Forget December 1st. Why not splash out and really stand out from the crowd and go for a 30th of November box?! (Smile)

HamiltonBentley · 13/09/2019 07:44

@12feasts I love the idea of a Christmas book. I will one in my own (is it really sad that I'm excited about making one just for myself Blush)
DH doesn't read - not sure what to put in his as a similar equivalent...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/09/2019 08:37

Gah it winds me up when posters come onto a thread specifically to piss on someone elses chips.
If the thought of it offends , then don't bother with it , but the snippy comments are just uncalled for .

CEH (on the 24th) are a lovely way of calming down over excited DC
Mine used to love theirs and they don't cost ££ and aren't another load of presents .

My DC are teens now and still like the whole build up to Christmas , but they don't need the whole How many sleeps thing.

As for another expense :
I buy my DC bathrobes and winter PJs
And underwear
Things I'd buy them anyway so it makes sense to do it for the 1st.

And we've always done a jar of sweets (the jar gets recycled into the kitchen or to put pencils /stationary bits in)

My DMum never liked Christmas , she didn't like the extra work involved (not that she did it , she fobbed it off onto whoever happened to be in the kitchen.....usually me )
And always said things like "I just want to go to sleep and wake up after New Year" or "My favourite day is Boxing Day ..because its all over "
Way to go to make us feel like we didn't deserve any sort of effort (unless we did it Hmm )

So when I had DC , I did make the extra effort , and its the little things they remember .

But for those who like to do someone down, Crack On !

Tiredmum100 · 13/09/2019 10:00

I bought a lovely Christmas box a few years ago with my dcs names on it, I put pjs and sweets in it, but I havent done it since 🙈. The box comes out every year for decoration. Then I use it to store Christmas decs in for the next year. I feel like a bit of a meanie. Might steal some ideas! My in laws bought the dc that blinking elf a few years ago so I just feel like it's all too much sometimes trying to think up new ideas!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/09/2019 11:31

Tiredmum d'you have a branch of The Range near you? They do some clothes and sundries (bed, duvet, bedding) for TheCreepyWeeFecker .aka Elf

(Not Elf-on-the-Shelf because that's a brand , but the same idea)

If your DC don't mention The Elf then quietly hide him away . If they do, then wrap him up in some cheapie bandages and get a couple of the Teddy bears to be Doctor and take him off to the Elf Infirmary for the whole of December .

#enabler Xmas Grin

AnnaMariaDreams · 13/09/2019 13:29

I do this but don’t do a Christmas Eve box.
DS is getting a Christmas long sleeved t shirt and new PJs, both bought in New Year sales and stashed.
He gets an advent calendar- this year Lego Harry Potter. He always gets a book- this year Father Christmas and Me by Matt Haig.
Chocolate tree decorations.
I find that’s plenty, although his Christmas treat this year is tickets to the Harry Potter Studios tour so I might send him a Hogwarts letter too.

Tiredmum100 · 13/09/2019 14:02

@70isaLimitNotaTarget - thank you that is a great idea. The worse part is when we get in to bed and realise no ones moved the elf! 🙄😴. Yes we do have a range nearby I'll pop down and have a look! I did notice they were putting out the trees etc last week!

One2Three4Five6 · 15/09/2019 10:43

This annoys me too!
People tend to have rather divided opinions on Christmas and how everyone should do it.
Each to their own!
I have a friend who celebrates Christmas in a very different way to me, shockingly though, we are still friends and can manage to see that each of us does what makes us happy.

If you don't like Christmas/boxes/whatever then avoid the bloody thread or the whole Christmas section. Simple

OctoberLovers · 15/09/2019 10:44

I think that really is enough

One2Three4Five6 · 15/09/2019 10:52

We do have a Christmas 1st box, as I did one on Christmas eve one year and found not everything got used in all the excitement so we started doing it on the first of the month instead.
There is nothing in it that I didn't buy in the run up to Christmas anyway, so it's not really any extra expense in fairness.
Last year I did get more things, as a) I had a little extra cash, and b) I thought it would be my daughters last year believing so I went all out.
In general though our box contains
A Christmas themed book or two
A Christmas themed colouring book each & pencils
Some Christmas wordsearches/crosswords that I print off
Christmas pyjamas (last year I managed to get matching ones for all of us :)
Hot chocolate & Mugs (I don't get mugs every year, only if I see some I particularly like, or if the previous ones get broken/lost)
Popcorn to munch while we watch our films
Sweets
A new decoration for the tree.

I don't put in films as we have them all now, or all the ones we really like at least

Last years box also had a jigsaw puzzle, and Christmas themed card games.
Sometimes there are extras like a cuddly toy, sometimes there aren't... It depends what I can find in the shops/money/my mood

Cherryrainbow · 15/09/2019 11:09

Ooh I'm tempted to do a dec 1st box this year - I'd put in his advent calender, hot chocolate, his xmas jammies and bedding. Make the most use of those things then x

DreamingofSunshine · 15/09/2019 15:20

I think it's a good idea, I might repurpose our Christmas eve box for this.
I buy winter themed pj's on ebay, I've done Christmas book swaps with my nieces and nephews, and I get DS some Christmas socks. Hardly costs a fortune.

This year I might put in some cardboard/wooden decorations for toddler DS to decorate together and add in the gingerbread cutters I've never used.

onemorecakeplease · 15/09/2019 15:33

I think I too will move our Christmas Eve box to the 1st! I love this idea so I'm stealing- bedding and pjs, advent calendars, craft stuff, baking things and cards to write

Also it's the day we tend to put up our decorations so that will be a nice treat.
