Sooo we've just booked to eat at an Indian restaurant for Christmas Day dinner & I can't wait!!
Anyone else done something similar before & broke away from the norm of the traditional roast?

We got takeaway Chinese two years ago!
Was fab, no cooking and hardly any washing up!
Enjoy!

Me and my family did an Indian a few years ago, it was the best Christmas meal I've had! I've never been a huge fan of roasts so Indian curry was amazing. So cheap and so much food, I'd happily do it every year if I could!! You'll have a fab time.

Yes, I have done it a couple of times. It was great and so stress free.

Fabulous idea,I’m envious, can’t wait to see my Ddads face when I suggest it!

I love traditional Christmas dinner but would happily have it on another day to eat an Indian takeaway on Christmas day! Theres already enough upheaval and faff without trying to cook a roast for 15 people.

I don't think my family would go for it though!

We did it two years ago! It was actually really lovely!!

I remember we got fed up of the Christmas shizz when we were teenagers, and so my dad cooked us up egg and chips. Mum joined in too and we had Christmas dinner Boxing Day. My dad was a legend!

You can’t beat a traditional Christmas dinner! We always make a curry with the leftovers though! Best of both worlds there but at least with a restaurant you don’t have to clear up!

DH and I had Christmas on our own for the first time in 20+ years last year. He cooked our favourite curries and it was fab. Back to the turkey this year as we have guests again (wish we could do the same but guests would be disappointed).

I love a night when we have the time to do a proper Indian feast.

Homemade naans are a little faffy, but really worth it. And mixed puppodums (or buy those ready done plain ones).

Tomato salsa is easy and a lovely light thing for on the side with good chutneys from jars.

Pulau rice is actually relatively straightforward if you have the whole spices (peppercorns, cloves, cardomam pods, salt, saffron strands).

Bombay aloo potatoes made with baby potatoes are also simple.

And then just 2 or 3 different curries laid out in bowls. We like to do a chicken one, a lamb one and a fish one, and usually a vegetarian one as well - it may only be 2 or 3 eating but all leftovers can be frozen. So doing for a big group would really only mean scaling up the quantity of rice.

Sorry I meant to say the tomato salsa is literally dicing tomatoes, slicing a bunch of spring onions, and grinding a good bit of black pepper into the bowl before stirring it all together.

We did this for years when I was young (probably from being around 10) It was great to get dressed up and go out and we were huge curry fans anyway so preferred it to a roast.

This thread has just inspired me to do curry on Boxing Day. We have buffet / party food on the day itself. We'll do the kids' favourite food too. I'll do a slightly-pimped roast the Sunday after or NYD.
