2 joint presents or one each?

Starting to think about presents for DC.
I usually get them one main present each, plus maybe clothes, and a stocking.

I have thought of a couple of things that they would both like, and that would work well being shared - they would likely both use them equally.

One is more of a toy, so more "fun" the other is not. It seems to make sense to give both jointly, rather than choosing one arbitrarily for each DC.

DC do share well, and play together a lot. But I have never given joint presents before.

Anyone else give joint presents - do you feel it works well?

Yes, I’ve done joint presents to my Dc from me and my Dh. Then their stockings from FC are their individual presents.

I hated joint gifts as. Child so haven’t done it. I would do one each.

Redshoeblueshoe · 09/09/2019 19:01

I was given a joint present with my DB as a child, it wasn't a problem

GreenTulips · 09/09/2019 19:02

I also hated joint presents and wouldn’t give them. My twins have separate gifts and birthday cakes/parties.

RicStar · 09/09/2019 19:04

I also didn't like joint presents Blush maybe as the younger sibling I felt I wouldn't get my share of it (probably true). I am considering buying a joint gift though...

Arrowfanatic · 09/09/2019 19:15

I've done gifts to share with my 3. One year they all asked for gel pens so instead of spending £20 on each for a small box of pens i spent £40 on a MASSIVE box to share.

The nintendo switch was bought to share, as are the games.

Alarae · 09/09/2019 19:37

My parents bought my two sisters and I a PlayStation and three games.

We all 'claimed' a game but in reality we all shared. No arguments really as we liked to watch each other play (and wind each other up when they died).

We have done joint presents when its something both would equally enjoy and use

Stompythedinosaur · 09/09/2019 23:24

We give joint presents - there's no way I would have given a toy kitchen or a trampoline to one of the dc, knowing it would be used by all.

My dc seem fine with knowing what is theirs personally, what belongs to them both, and what belongs to the family.

BringMoreCoffee · 10/09/2019 01:09

I think it's fine to do that, but personally I would let them know in advance.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 10/09/2019 12:47

We give our two DD’s a joint present each year, alongside their own presents. It’s slightly different for us as I’m disabled and it’s a thank you for helping as much as you do present. It depends on what they both really like/want as to what it is. It’s been anywhere from books and pens to a switch. I would give them both as joint presents but would mention it to them.

pikapikachu · 10/09/2019 13:10

With joint presents I'd be thinking who gets to open the gift but as you have 2 joint presents I think that's fine. Sometimes it's impossible to decide which child would enjoy it more and buying more than one for the sake of it is wasteful.

Cohle · 10/09/2019 13:25

I think it really depends on your kids to be honest.

Some would be absolutely fine with this whilst in other families it would cause resentment.

We sometimes did it with "big" electronics like PlayStations and it generally worked well.

PermanentPortakabin · 10/09/2019 13:50

It depends on what the items are, imo

Some things are better for sharing than others.

Eg, last year I got my dc a Switch as a joint present between all 3 of them. It’s worked fine. It’s something which works well as a share - easy to take turns, play together, etc.

A few years ago their grandparents gave them a huge rabbit soft toy between them. Nothing but arguments (which room it should be in, how to share it, how it is treated when in another room, etc).

Shockers · 10/09/2019 13:56

Joint presents were garden equipment like a trampoline and a swing set, or the year they got a wii. Also a cage for pet rats, but the rats were chosen after Christmas (Father Christmas doesn’t bring livestock Wink).

@Whathappenedtothelego I'm a believer in no joint presents purely based on my experience of the 1 year my parents did it for my brother and i. Our "joint" present was the first PlayStation package with basic games. It wasn't something I had mentioned at any point or was overly interested in. I felt a little hard done by but didn't make a fuss at the time. As such it became my brothers and lived in his room. We remind them every now and again - usually at Christmas (and I'm 38 now and he is 36) 😝😀
