Gifts for Grans

Hi All,

Am looking for suggestions of what to buy my grans this year - I have two of them, and both are equally difficult to buy for! They already have everything they need/want, and over the years they have received tons of family photos/ornaments/afternoon tea vouchers/massage vouchers etc from their many kids and grandkids.

Was considering adopting a donkey for the gran that loves animals (donkeys are a favourite of hers), but unsure if this would come across as a bit "twee"?

If stuck I can revert to the usual PJ's, chocs etc but it would nice to get them something they really appreciate.

One gran is very outgoing and loves to travel and read, the other is very old fashioned and likes practical gifts.

Neither would appreciate perfume/toiletries/candles etc.

Any ideas?

TIA

Not sure about the donkey one. If it were me, I’d rather a donation to a good donkey sanctuary rather than the money being spent on certificates and newsletters. I think adopting animals is a good entry point for children, not so much for adults. But people can be funny about their gift being donated, so I’d suss our views on that first. I know people who donate generously to causes but like a treat for themselves too iyswim.

For the travel-lover how about an anti theft travel bag or a scarf with a hidden pocket

Thanks for your reply - I see what you're saying with regards to the donkey thing, that's partly why I wasn't sure of it myself. I've had animals adopted for me as gifts before and I liked it, but I appreciate that not everyone would.

Thank you for the links, will look into them :-)

Magazine subscription?

Careradvice2019 · 08/09/2019 22:50

I'm a grandma ( 44 years old I'll have you know ) and I would absolutely hate the idea of fostering / sponsoring a donkey as a gift

Careradvice2019 · 08/09/2019 22:51

Yes .. magazine subscription!! Good food or something similar .. definitely

Mishappening · 08/09/2019 22:54

I am a gran - 7x over! The magazine sub is a good one; and I always love plants or flowers. When you get to this stage of life, you are wanting to get rid of "stuff", not accumulate more.

Could be on to something with the magazine subscription for the one who loves reading, will look into it - thanks for the suggestions.
Careradvice - what a young gran you are! One of my grans is almost double your age.
The plant pot is a good one, too - I got one for one of my grans the other year and it went down well, so could get another one this year.

I'd avoid the type of presents that say "...now you're old this is what you get for a present". I got a hamper of broken biscuits, hotel breakfast small jars of jam and preserves once. Felt bloody old!

Cashmere socks or gloves. I’m 37 and absolutely love them so they’re not too ‘old’. But feel beautiful.

I am a GP and one thing a dd gave me one year was 3 months' - one a month - delivery of flowers from Bloom and Wild. They come in a very carefully packed slim box that will go through a letterbox.
Since I'd forgotten after the first, it was a lovely surprise when 2 and 3 arrived.
Probably on the expensive side though.
A magazine sub is a good idea, as long as its one they would like. Personally there are a lot, esp. any Hello! type or similar, that would be a complete waste of money for me.

I’m getting one of the Grandmas in my life a silk pillowcase. Her hair is her thing. I reckon she will love it
