What are you getting your 8 year old girls?

Im really struggling for a main present for dd8. She already had a bike, a kindle, a chrome book, her own keyboard and so much lego she hasn't opened some boxes from last year. She has no idea what she would like either. Im really stumped this year. Im open to any ideas although Im not going to buy a tablet or phone - she doesn't need a phone and she has limited access to a family tablet which has proved addictive enough to suggest its not a good idea to buy her one of her own. Any ideas?

My daughter has a Christmas birthday so we are considering, a proper camera, decent binoculars or a fish tank and fish. She's really interested in birds, plants and bugs and takes photos of everything with my phone camera. She has asked for the binoculars but I'm leaning towards the camera.

What is your daughter interested in?

snowmanshoes · 07/09/2019 19:20

My 8 year old really likes the design a friend dolls and when we were walking past the entertainer today they were advertising a new range of similar dolls (think they were 'B'dolls) other than that I have got her a chalkboard globe (from Asda) and some funky baking things as she loves watching junior masterchef and sugar rush.

Dd loves going to the theatre, playing her keyboard and singing. She already has a keyboard. Ive looked at theatre tickets which will probably be an option. She already has a decent camera. She is very lucky.

Another instrument? Violin if she's a good singer - she'll already understand internalising pitch.

MrsPworkingmummy · 08/09/2019 07:37

My daughter is the same age, and it sounds as if they have similar interests. Her birthday is also in January and she's after a science themed bedroom as we've said we'll redecorate, so I'm hoping to buy presents which link to that. If your dd likes birds etc, would she like a bug hotel? A worm house etc? We'll definitely get our dd a chemistry set, a volcano set, a lockable diary, some lego, a feather boa, some art supplies and other bits and bobs. Her main present is going to be a hover board. We've booked a number of Christmas activities throughout December - a trip to London (we're from the NE), pantomime, orchestral performance of The Snowman which she'll love too. Cant wait.

My 8yo is getting:
Pop stars Lego
Harry Potter training wand
Notebook with her initial on
Paint to make window stickers
Mauraders map book
Harry potter bedding
Diablo and juggling balls
Viking game
Bath bomb making set
Hat with moving ears
Maybe a build a bear voucher

Recent hits as presents have been an animation set (we got the Stickbot one) and a rock tumbler.

Elphaba17 · 08/09/2019 10:56

I'm not doing a main present, as we're at the stage where she has so much we would just be buying something for the sake of it. I'm just buying her some things she's seen and asked for so far:

Harry Potter lego knight bus
Cluedo board game
Our generation doll
Our generation outfit
Science set
Lab coat and glasses

I'm sure there will be a few more things between now and christmas. Her stocking will be filled with things like notebook, pens, hair accessories, lego minifigures, jewellery, hair chalk, sweets.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 08/09/2019 10:59

Does she have a karaoke machine? They're loads of fun with family or friends and you can get a pretty decent one @ the £50 - £75 bracket.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 08/09/2019 11:02

The LOL campervan thingy will be her main gift

A stocking full of little surprises
Fluffy pjs
Books

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 08/09/2019 11:08

And an advent calendar for December Smile

Whatsername7 · 08/09/2019 13:31

Shes got a singstar thing which is the same. We have a small theme park bot to far from us so Im going to get annual passes on black friday as they usually have a good offer £30 for adults and £20 for dc. It will cost £100 total but we will get use out it and dd8 will love it. Dd2 will too I think. The problem is, dd2 is getting a bike which will make it seem like she has two 'main' presents. Maybe im over thinking it and she won't notice. I wish I'd never started the 'main present' thing tbh!

We took everyone out to dinner. Job done. Why do kids need anything more? If they really have everything they want, buying more is beyond me.

Stompythedinosaur · 08/09/2019 13:45

What about a y scooter? Might be a good equivalent to a bike. My 8yo likes hers.

IggyAce · 08/09/2019 13:50

Sounds like she has all the stuff she needs. How about:
a magazine subscription
A session in a recording studio
Theatre/concert tickets

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 08/09/2019 13:51

Would she have any interest in an animation studio? We're thinking about the Hue Animation set for ds who's also 8.

Roller skates? Scooter?

I'm not saying this to make you feel bad honestly but I think a bike for dd2 while dd1s is actually a family gift is something that an 8 year old would definitely notice. Sorry 😬! It's only September though so there's still time.

QueenMabby · 08/09/2019 15:10

Things my dd (10) has had in the past few years that were a hit:
Magazine subscriptions (Nat Geo Kids and Horrible History)
Tickets. Every year for her birthday (Dec) she asks for ballet tickets so we book to go Feb/March time and have an evening out.
She’s also had tickets to sporting events (netball World Cup)
Music related stuff: books on composition, manuscript paper etc.
If she likes cooking how about a children’s Cookery course or workshop?
Afternoon tea at a nearby hotel?
My dd is not a “things” person and definitely prefers experiences over toys etc.

cccameron · 08/09/2019 15:57

Your kids don't have any presents at all to open on Xmas day yeahyeah? How old are they?

I'm struggling to think of much for dd (9) this year so watching with interest. She loves singing so will be getting a good quality karaoke machine. Where will your dd use her hover board 37MrsPworkingmummy . Dd has mentioned one but I'm not sure how much use she'd get out of it.

Whatsername7 · 08/09/2019 16:21

I think you are right cantsleep, which is why im trying to think of something nice. I will look into the magazine subscription, she would like that!

No, not from us! 10 & 7 last Christmas.

Father Christmas brings a book, hairbands, choc orange, pack of pens in a stocking, so you could say that I’m not being accurate.

Then they get gifts from:
2 x aunt/uncle
Grandparents x2
Cousins x 2

They get plenty.

We don’t buy for any adults in our family either Shock Grin

We all have too much crap. About 15 years ago we agreed to give the gift of time, so at Christmas we open our diaries and book time together.

Bluebell9 · 09/09/2019 10:00

My DSD is getting an Alexa this year for her room as her main present. She loves listening to music.

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 09/09/2019 19:01

I will say the Alexa is the most used item by my DD’s - bought by their uncle
