Should I get an elf?

Will I regret it if I do?? I have a dd6 and a ds10 (who has a learning disability). They would both be enthralled by it and totally taken in. However, I don’t want to lie to them about but also don’t want to take away the excitement if that makes sense. Am I over complicating this? If I get one where should I get it from? Thanks x

if you'd want to do the tacky 'scenes' and elf misbehaving don't bother. It's a hassle! Who can be arsed with that every night for a month?!

But, if you wanted to do it as in the story then the elf just sits somewhere different- you don't even have to move it every night. My DD loves the elf on the shelf movie and gets really excited about her elf going back to the North Pole to see his friends at night. The only thing our elf brings is a little hello note on day 1 and then a goodbye note and some PJs on Christmas Eve. I was cornered into getting one but actually she really loves it, we also have a fairy door in her bedroom and the magic is just part of life for her.

@Singleandproud I love that idea for your own presents. That’s quite inspired.

Yes and DD was always so thrilled he had delivered something she knew I wanted (I’d casually drop hints etc). One year I had managed to get tickets for Hamilton so I got myself the soundtrack and accompanying book and printed out some paper tickets (you don’t get the real ones until show day), we had listened to some of the songs on YouTube and I had talked about how impossible it was to get tickets. Christmas Day she almost burst from anticipation when she gave them to me.

Also he delivered them with gold starry paper, a gold star is the main emblem/ symbol for the show so it all tied in.

Our Elf moves each night unless I've been out on the piss and I've forgotten. If the kids notice and say something, I just blame it for being lazy. It does bring Elfie's Christmas Letters though, which they love. DH started moving it last year, so now I'm caught up with trying to find the bloody thing too. I do moan about it but we have a right laugh with it. One year DH put it in the washing machine, it got washed by mistake, the kids realised and were Shock Shock Shock 'but what about it's magic?! So then DH was picking it up with sticks of cinnamon to transfer it to the Christmas tree Grin I haven't laughed so hard!

Winesolveseverything - I really love the sound of your elf door. Where did you get it from? Such a lovely idea.

I think it was from the Works.. But there are lots on Amazon to choose from too...
It appears above the skirting board and we have a teeny Christmas tree that goes on the floor next to it!!

We have one. It's a pia to be honest. He doesn't get up to mischief every night. The kids do enjoy it though.

i bought one last year and my baby is 22. I had great fun tormenting dh and the dog with it.

as for the ToothFairy...ours was very busy and had a very strict rota and could not possibly be expected to search all the rooms for teeth so unless the teeth were on the mantlepiece there'd be no payment. Also she was scared of the cats, fairies do not care for cats, and living in the back of beyond meant visits were random.
