What do you think you'll be buying for your Year 6 age children for Christmas?

I'm very aware that DD, who will be 11 just after Christmas will be less into toys and more into tech over the next year.

She has a tablet and will be getting a phone for her 11th birthday.

I'm wondering what others are thinking of buying for Christmas at this age. I'm very aware that when she starts secondary school next year that all toys will be banished (like Toy Story 2) under the bed!😥

Any nice things that I can buy that will be valued a tiny bit longer?

My DD asked for a microscope for her 10th birthday, which has been well used so far.
Camera?

RightMover · 31/08/2019 17:25

Mine would like a polaroid camera.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 31/08/2019 17:39

My dd is just turning 10 so a little younger but yes, less interested in toys. Some of what we're thinking of for birthday/Christmas:

Instax mini 9
Fitbit ace 2
Bluetooth headphones/speaker
Bath bomb gift set
Trainers (favourite brand)

What about things for her room such as a cute storage box, wall decals, a cozy throw, unusual lamp?

Does she enjoy baking, drawing, reading, crafts?

MrsBungle · 31/08/2019 17:40

I’m thinking of getting my dd a Fitbit.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 31/08/2019 17:53

She has an instax mini (last birthday) although maybe extra film and a nice case would be a good idea as it's gathering dust!

She also has a fake Fitbit.

I like the microscope idea.

Yes she loves baking and being sassy and complaining about lack of screen time so I could try and get a few more bits. Maybe a waffle maker or something a bit unusual as she's had a lot of aprons, utensils and books in the past.

We don't have a laptop or a games console, that is under discussion as a family present...

My daughter has an iPad, phone and computer and none of that will need updating this year so I've been wondering the same. She doesn't play with toys anymore but she loves art so we'll probably buy lots from hobbycraft. She has also asked for a nice necklace. I'm sure she'll think of lots of other things on the next few months but we will probably give her some money as she likes buying from Amazon and Claires throughout the year.

Ah lovely Hobbycraft. That's a good shout. I might make up a basket of goodies from there.

Same here, v v tricky age.

Big present will be Google home mini. Tk max had some interesting craft kits.. Sewing thing and paint thing that looked ok.

But I'm also stuck!

Roller skates maybe!

Once my ds got to secondary school he got into named brands so maybe a hoodie from a brand or t shirts etc.
Also a rucksack ready for her next school - seems a bit early to buy it but the cost of uniform is enough without having to add bags etc!

Justabadwife · 31/08/2019 19:36

Dd is 10 and going into year 6 on Wednesday 😭😭
For xmas she is getting

Pandora charms
Lego friends
Nintendo switch games
Lush bath bombs
Board games
Nike air max trainers

My mum is making her a baking hamper with a decent food mixer, scales, all the tins and trays she will need and basic baking stuff, flour, sugar etc.

Her phone runs out of its contract on xmas eve, so that might be a present as well.

user1573624 · 31/08/2019 20:36

Please consider just getting a brick phone for emergency contact and calling friends as an alternative to a smart phone. If you do I promise she will be interested in other things longer.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 01/09/2019 08:26

@user1573624

Fear not, there will be a considerable amount of stressing research and soul searching before any of the phone stuff happens.
My kids still have screen time rules and I'm going to make sure any phone that my little dictator DD has spends more time on a shelf than it does in her hand! At least for the time being... I'm dreading it...

It's such a hard age. How about:

  • echo dot
  • Philips hue coloured lightbulb
  • stuff for her room, cool posters, new bedding etc.
  • mini sphero
  • headphones
  • cool branded hoody or backpack
  • toiletries (something a bit more 'grown up')
  • art supplies
  • new board game
CSharpLemon · 01/09/2019 08:31

Also think about experiences rather than things.
Does your zoo do a zookeeper for a day?
Proper cookery class at a local cooking school?
That kind of thing?

CSharpLemon · 01/09/2019 08:32

Voucher for a place she likes to go with her friends?

LoonyLunaLoo · 02/09/2019 18:15

An Apple watch but he is a bit of an Apple geek!

WellTidy · 02/09/2019 18:45

Jewellery
Jewellery box
Nice art stuff like pastels, watercolour pencils, acrylics etc and quality brushes and paper
Things for their room like lamp, cushions, bean bag or rug, lava lamp, one of those night light that casts stars patterns, disco ball
Decent jigsaw puzzle and a roll up mat/case
Popcorn maker

sawyersfishbiscuits · 03/09/2019 07:26

Some fab ideas on here!
Thanks x

@LoonyLunaLoo don't think I can stretch to an Apple Watch Grin but I'm sure she'd love one!
