Hi everyone.

Can't believe I've only now found this board!!! I'm a huuuuuge Christmas fan!!!

I'm looking for Christmas ideas for my baby who will be nearly 1 (bday in early Jan)

I have no idea about kids presents.

I understand he won't know it's Christmas as he'll be so young but obviously still need to get some stuff.....

Any ideas would be fab! Cheaper the better as I'm on maternity pay at the mo and nursery fees will be crippling me when I go back in November!

Pic of my Xmas tree last year for the fun 😁 Xx

For a one year old I'd look at things like a walker, shape sorter, stacking toys, blocks, jigsaw puzzles, pull along/push along toys, bath toys, board/cloth/bath books.

Not all of those mind Grin! He'll get really overwhelmed if you do a big pile at that age plus you may have family who'll also buy him gifts.

Whitecandle · 19/08/2019 09:00

@ImNotHappyaboutitPauline wooow love some of those ideas!!! Especially the wooden fire engine!! Thank you so much.

Buy some for mine if you're stuck 😆😆 X

My DD was 1 in July. For her birthday we bought her a shape sorter, some duplo blocks, a drinking cup, and a "puppet" face flannel, which could go in your stocking if you're doing one. We got our older DC a reindeer flannel last Christmas so something like that. You could also look at a push along toy as he'll be walking within the next year.

with birthday and Christmas so close together, decide what you want to get, what family are going to get, and divide them up between the two. You may also want to get a toy cooker for example, as my oldest played with his before he was 2. Depends if you want "things he'll need before next Christmas" or 2things to play with now."

ImNotHappyaboutitPauline · 19/08/2019 09:13

@Whitecandle Grin I'll stick with the free enjoyment of linking stuff! I've 11 dns to buy for (we didn't know they'd keep reproducing when we started off generously for the first ones!) but they range in age from 17 down to 4 and it's just not as much fun as they get older and have their own opinions and preferences. My own are 8 and nearly 10 so no more cute baby and toddler toys in this house.

Whitecandle · 19/08/2019 09:17

@SayOohLaLa great ideas! Thank you. Hadn't thought about getting stuff he will need within the next year.. very good idea!!

@ImNotHappyaboutitPauline we said we aren't buying for family kids and them not to buy for ours (twins run in my partners side of the family. Plus about another 10 kids) talk about expensive! I'd rather my baby go without a few toys than have to buy all those 🙈🤣

Good call, I only wish I'd had your foresight Grin!

My DD is the same age as yours Smile. We're going to hold off on toys until Nov to see what she likes. Get her a few for now and a few she'll grow into. Then going to get her some clothes for the year. Making the most of the summer sales to pick up a few nice bits in 12-18m Smile

My DS was 1 on 10/1, for Christmas he had a wee’un & ramp from sawdust and rainbows and it’s been used every single day! The big hit from his birthday was the ikea toy kitchen. He liked the toot toot cars & animals too a lot, and loved his little trike/bike that is propelled with his feet (but not quite a balance bike as has 3 wheels)
Have attached a picture of the Christmas hit so you can see what I mean.

My DS will be one in October. We've bought him a wooden pay kitchen, he's a bit young for it yet but it was an absolute bargain (£30 from Aldi) and he'll enjoy taking the pots and pans in and out of the cupboard and opening and closing the oven/washing machine doors if nothing else. We've also got him a couple of books, this hop along dog thing from ELC, a cuddly Iggle Piggle that glows and plays a lullaby from his 5yo sister and some bath toys. I'm not going to get much more as he will get lots of toys from family anyway.

Youseethethingis · 19/08/2019 12:49

My DS will be 6 months this Christmas and I’ve decided to go for commemorative gifts for him his year, as we will be buying developmentally appropriate toys as and when required and he has no concept of the time of year anyway. Buying in toys ahead of time just to present them at Christmas is fine if you have the storage space and we definitely don’t!
Ive found a lovey personalised wooden Christmas box on Etsy (NOT a Christmas Eve box, just Christmas theme) which I plan to store his Christmas essentials in, such as my own childhood copy of “Twas the night before Christmas” , a personalised wooden Christmas tree bauble for Baby’s First Christmas and over the years Santa’s plate and new Christmas craft bits will make there way in there too. Oh and his personalised stocking will also be in there - I have binged on Etsy, I really have Grin[santa]

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/08/2019 15:19

I buy mine (this year they will be almost 5 and 18 months respectively) a lovely book every Christmas. Not specifically age appropriate books but ones I hope they'll treasure into adulthood. So for example Dc2 got a lovely edition of the Secret Garden last year despite only being six months.

Isadora2007 · 19/08/2019 15:29

@Sweetooth92 can you find a link for the slide attachment please? I’ve found the frame.

Lanka Kade do lovely wee wooden animals so I’ve got all the animals from dear zoo (the book) and a book bag to put them together as a story sack and the same for Oh Dear book as they’re my grandsons favourite books.

Sweetooth92 · 19/08/2019 15:35

@Isadora2007 they have the slide in at yesbebe.co.uk/91_sawdust-rainbows/

We have the ramp rather than the actual slide as it only was launched on Friday, afaik the new slide is only with stockists this time, but will be on the main website eventually.

Whitecandle · 19/08/2019 15:42

@Sweetooth92 are they not a bit young for all that climbing frame thing at 1?? Surely they can't walk etc?

I have never had a one year old so no idea!!

OP posts:
Whitecandle · 19/08/2019 15:45

@Sweetooth92 where did you get the blue donkey thing from?? They had one at play group the other day and my little boy loved it!!

OP posts:
Sweetooth92 · 19/08/2019 15:48

My son was 11.5 months and used it from Christmas. Took him a few months to get used to going over the top but he was climbing up the ramp and rungs on the frame instantly. They’re really good for them getting stable on their feet too as it’s something to pull up against and cruise round. Have attached a few photos from last Christmas-new year with him using as it probably explains better than me!

Can’t find the exact same horse as ours in stock any more-I had ours from very. But the original ones are called Rody,
rodytoy.com/
They have them on amazon etc, but it might be worth having a look for a similar one in Argos etc, I think ours was £17.99 instead of the £30 for the branded one, but I brought it about October so it’s a bit hazy!

Whitecandle · 19/08/2019 16:39

@Sweetooth92 wow can't believe a baby that young is so active like that!! I have a shock coming to me lol!!

Tempted to buy one now! I do don't have room for it tho!

OP posts:
Sweetooth92 · 19/08/2019 16:51

Yeah they get active quickly! Enjoy the stillness while you aren’t flying around to catch them!! 😊 it does fold down but we love ours it gets so much hammer and still looks lovely-as far as toys go!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 19/08/2019 16:55

wow can't believe a baby that young is so active like that!! I have a shock coming to me lol!!

My youngest is 14 months, she's been walking since 11 months and can climb like a cat. It will vary from child to child but it's frightening how quickly they get mobile.

Aldi do a version of the blue donkey thing, we have a green dragon and it was a fraction of the price (£9 maybe). It's held up fine despite daily use from both mine, including the 4 year old who likes riding it around the house. Not sure if they have them all year around but I think I definitely got mine just before Christmas last year.

Dc1 got a playhouse for his 1st birthday. We do have it indoors because of our garden (terraces/lots of concrete/lots of steps) but it's been a huge success and I'd definitely recommend if you have a suitable garden. Christmas/Jan/Feb is usually a good time to buy them because it's out of season.

Chillisauceboss · 19/08/2019 19:21

This sounds really cheeky / bad parents but we got baby just one toy for their 1st. We were really fortunate to have grandparents both sides but a good handful of aunts and uncles. So I already knew there were a few big toys, and smaller gifts and clothes coming. So DH and I bought a cute wooden keepsake style toy (appdix £15) and then put a certain amount into savings. Seemed silly to buy lots more stuff when they were getting things from family

mytvwatchesyou · 02/09/2019 02:49

@Chillisauceboss not cheeky or bad parenting at all! Wish we had done that, rather than spending money on a load of old tat that ended up getting taken to the charity within a few months!
