Hi all
I'm having a quieter Xmas this year just DP and me, but still want to make it special.

What luxury foods should I get in?

Same here, I've decided on lobster for our Christmas dinner starter!

But haven't got much further than that yet.

Artesia · 16/08/2019 16:54

Roast guinea fowl - works with all the same accompaniments as turkey but shot the right size for 2, and is lovely

LaurieFairyCake · 16/08/2019 16:59

Fortnums game pie, haggis scotch eggs, biscuits, ruby choc, Boxing Day relish

Finfintytint · 16/08/2019 17:02

I'm going to make some haggis Bon Bons this year. Had some at a wedding this summer and they were lovely.

missyB1 · 16/08/2019 17:06

Hotel chocolat liquer

missyB1 · 16/08/2019 17:06

Liquer crocs that is!

Titsywoo · 16/08/2019 17:07

Really nice cheese with posh crackers and chutney

missyB1 · 16/08/2019 17:07

Oh chocs ffs!! 🙄 what’s wrong with my bloody phone!

Fantababy · 16/08/2019 17:08

If you're a beef eater we got a lovely chateaubriand last year for Christmas Day.

RoseyPeas · 16/08/2019 18:26

Ooh thanks everyone.
Definitely like the sound of fortnums game pie. Will definitely be checking out the rest of their nibbles.

Anyone tried the low sugar Hotel Chocolat chocs? Am off sugar and want to persuade DP that he can do without QS/Roses (otherwise I'll dip into them no doubt!)

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 17/08/2019 07:56

If you’re off sugar, then the answer is CHEESE!

I would go to a specialist cheese shop and buy four or five really good ones, with crackers, nuts and grapes.

fessmess · 17/08/2019 08:16

It's August. HTH

Junoon · 17/08/2019 08:18

Go to a proper cheese shop and get a selection of cheeses.

PersonaNonGarter · 17/08/2019 08:19

Paxton & Whitfield are your friend. They are amazing cheesemongers and deliver. My brother always sends DH stilton from them every year in a nice pot.

(We don’t give it to visitors but eat it in front of the telly on Boxing Day. Perfect)

RoseyPeas · 17/08/2019 09:24

Yes! I don't know why I hadn't thought about interesting cheeses. They usually get pushed to the back of the fridge behind sugary desserts 😬
Will look at P&W.
Thanks all

It's the Christmas topic.

HTH

Nice wine for the meal - DH and I will spend €20 a bottle on 2 bottles (we might want one glass from the 2nd and finish it on 26th, or only open it another time).

We usually buy €10 worth of Leonidas orangettes rather than tins of chocs. Find some nice chocs that YOU love.

I get some amaretti biscuits as my treat.
DH gets those dried broad beans to eat while drinking a beer.

We like a proper turkey dinner and I make sure to have space to freeze leftovers - a whole breast makes a nice pie later in the spring for example.

Lots of nice cheeses as there are plenty of days to enjoy it. And a bottle of port and nice crackers and good grapes.

For Christmas Eve, we do a “platter” type meal - cold things like pate’ and smoked salmon, prawns, cured meats, olives, hummus, nice breadsticks, cherry tomatoes, etc. All laid out on the table to help ourselves - often having raided the nice cheese shop, local deli and M&S to put it together. We usually start the cheeses then too. And wash it down with some bubbles.

Pannalash · 17/08/2019 18:16

Remind me not to accept a sweet at your house Finfin ‘haggis Bon bons’ Grin

UndertheCedartree · 17/08/2019 22:17

There's always one @fessmess! Coming on the Christmas topic and wondering why people are talking about Christmas! ConfusedHmm

fessmess · 17/08/2019 22:20

But but it's August! And and it's one ONE day! 🙄😃

RoseyPeas · 18/08/2019 08:32

Thanks everyone.
I spent yesterday evening on the Fortnums website - it's a different world Smile

Just wondering whether if I go high end this year, I'll feel despondent going back to slumming it at Tesco in future years when I have a houseful to feed Grin

Yep another vote for really nice cheese! With special crackers, chutney and picked walnuts.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/08/2019 08:59

We do Traditional Christmas (without turkey DH,DD and I are vegetarian. DS eats chicken, sausages and fish).
I love all the sides and I get all my serving dishes out on the table . We don't have the 'leftovers' , it all gets eaten. No sad turkey carcass to sigh over .I buy a Free Range chicken breast with skin for DS and roast that

I buy Lindy chocolates from the Bluewater shop, they do Pick&Mix . They look gorgeous in a glass jar Loads of flavours .

Nice bottles of beer for DH and I try and find the Stella Artois in the 'champagne' bottle for Christmas Day . I look for a special bottle of whisky too.

I bought a delicious Camenbert last year but it stunk the fridge out even though it was wrapped in the original paper+ thin wooden box and double wrapped in foil Shock
If the temperature is cool enough I might have to keep it in the garage until I want to eat it .

I tend to keep with the same Christmas Eve/Christmas Day/Boxing Day menu and try something different on other days .
My DS (19) always asks "Are you doing pizza for Boxing Day" it's our Tradition . Make up a pizza dough in the morning , let it rise , prep all the toppings then everyone can assemble their own pizza to bake .
Delicious Xmas Grin

missyB1 · 18/08/2019 09:22

We always do a home baked pie on Boxing Day using the meat leftovers and chuck in some leeks and peas, it was a Jamie Oliver recipe that we have adapted over the years. Everyone looks forward to our Boxing Day pie as much as the Christmas dinner.
