Hi I've been following the threads. Can we please have RL photos or screenshots of items we have bought.

I love looking at the stash pics 💕

Oh god. So much plastic.

Just give yours a log then. They can whittle it into a wooden doll (christmas fun for all the family)

I8toys · 15/09/2019 16:42

^ Brilliant. So much judgement. Why are people on the Christmas thread when they complain about it being months to go etc and we're also not allowed to buy actual toys for our children.

BeanBag7 · 17/09/2019 18:11

This is what I have for my daughters stocking (nearly 3 at Christmas)
Lots of bargains collected throughout the year.

  • magic painting book reduced from £6 to £3 in sainsburys
  • wooden toaster £6 in TK Maxx
  • 1000 stickers "as new" from an amazon shop for £3
  • frozen DVD second hand from a friend for free
  • playdoh fun factory £5 from aldi instead of £9 on amazon
  • spiders and spouts unopened £1.50 from charity shop

@cheesemumma will be pleased to see not much plastic, but I know that gets harder as kids get older and start making requests

Louise5754 are they discontinuing tiny treasures? My dd wants one from santa

cheesemumma · 17/09/2019 21:23

I'm in the Christmas thread as I love and enjoy Christmas. If I was any good at whittling I would definitely do as you suggested.

I will absolutely be getting my babies gifts and enjoying our time. I would, however, like for there to be a planet for them to enjoy the time with their children on. So I choose not to buy plastic instead of being so fucking unbelievably selfish. I can only assume (and hope to god) you are ignorant of the current future for your children. If that is the case, then maybe do a little research then come back to me. I sound harsh, but only in the hope someone may take note. I truly hope you're children have magical Christmases (I know mine will, despite the lack of meat or plastic) and will have many more to come.

@beanbag7 I am pleased to see actually. I will also be following your lead and trying to get as much second hand gifts as possible. You can get some amazing stuff on Facebook market place now.

BeanBag7 · 17/09/2019 21:43

@cheesemumma this is a good time of year for second hand stuff on facebook and charity shops because people start getting rid of stuff to make space for new things at Christmas. I've got some amazing bargains - last year was a Melissa and Doug latches board for £1.50 which are usually £17 Shock

HoHoHolyCow · 18/09/2019 14:41

So far I've only bought Harry Potter Dobble.

My DSs want to share a Nintendo Switch, so they wont be getting much more. We normally spend around £150 each on them (ideally less), so the Switch will end up being 99.9% of our budget!

HairyToity · 18/09/2019 15:50

I love Christmas but try not to go OTT, as I know a lot will eventually end in landfill. Also my children are as happy with second hand as new.

I'm not perfect though. I bought my first Christmas item today. A mermaid dress from H & M. Alas it was new. I try though, and don't give them huge piles of gifts.

cheesemumma · 18/09/2019 18:07

I honestly don't think they have a clue about new/used . To be honest I think my nearly 3yo DD would be happy with a pack of chocolate buttons. Though dh wants to get her a scooter so currently trying to track one down on Facebook. I bought her a helmet for it for £2 off a lovely lady the other day. Looks brand new. Dd2 will only be 5 months so, as mean as it sounds, she will only be getting a book and a pair of PJ's my sis gave me that she never put her DD in, so brand new. (I told her I was doing that).

But I'm already looking for recyclable wrapping paper so I can get started!!

Whitecandle · 19/09/2019 15:15

@cheesemumma bet it's really difficult to buy for a baby that has older siblings as I imagine you already have all the stuff she will want/need!

I have a now 8 month old but he's an only child so don't have anything and have no babies in my family etc x

cheesemumma · 19/09/2019 17:40

@whitecandle yes exactly. We were lucky enough that she has 2 girl cousins a few months older aswell, do she gets a lot of hand me downs. Seriously though, you can get some brilliant like new pieces on Facebook.

But I find they don't actually NEED anything anyway. But it's nice to have a couple of things to unwrap. May ask sister to knit her a pair of booties as well for when she's in the sling.

So excited to put up the decorations this year. I think DD1 will be into the magic of it all.

Whitecandle · 19/09/2019 17:43

@cheesemumma I'm all for second hand and reusing toys - trying my hardest to cut down our household use of plastic but it takes some time to change a habit of a lifetime.
I don't have Facebook - that's one negative as I can't use marketplace but do look on gumtree etc.

Also looking into the toy subscription websites where you give the toy back when you want a new one, instead of buying and buying.

Really good idea about the booties for the sling!!

Whitecandle · 19/09/2019 17:44

@cheesemumma it's going to be magical with a small baby😍😍

SouthWestmom · 19/09/2019 18:15

Cheesemama I really wish we had some second hand and less when mine were little. Over the years we have donated so much crap to charity shops, schools and landfill or sold at boot fairs. More recently I have stopped all the extras that are fun for five minutes. I'm buying tickets or vouchers this year.

SouthWestmom · 19/09/2019 18:16

Done not some

BeanBag7 · 22/09/2019 19:02

I'm also looking for a scooter for my DD who will be nearly 3 at Christmas. all the ones on marketplace seem really well used or are rubbish makes/character ones which I dont think will last. I think we might have to buy a new one so hoping for good sales!

Septembersunrays · 22/09/2019 19:13

Second hand stuff has to originate from somewhere.
I've always been very grateful to the people who could afford to buy new so I can buy it second hand.
My best haul was two bin bags full, pre xams clear out on free cycle.
We passed over half on and kept the rest, including fab huge lion King set. I didn't buy anything new.

Out of cost constraints.
Nearly all toys were second hand and most they didn't know. Most clothes as well.

However I wouldn't judge or be rude to someone who has and is getting excited about Xmas so incredibly nasty and rude.

@Whitecandle did you come across any toy subscription sites? I’m very interested, never heard of such a thing but what a very good idea!

Equimum · 21/10/2019 10:32

These are the stocking fillers that have arrived so far. I’m currently waiting on some handmade aprons, felt key rings, a Hape periscope and a few other bits and bobs.

There is some plastic here, but apart from the packaging (which I am frustrated about), but if these will be played with for a long time and passed in when outgrown. We have Hotwheels cars that my nearly 7 year old got when he was 2!

Other presents from us are second-hand bikes, helmets (new) and books. Our eldest has a birthday over Christmas and he is getting theatre tickets & an annual pass to the Wonder lab at the Science Museum, the latter of which will be put with a small science set.

We have always bought a mix of new and second hand. We bought second-hand Brio for a few years, and boxes of second-hand Dupli. I have also just sold on quite a few play-sets, some of which I know are going to be Christmas Presents for other small children.

@Equimum what are the bundle of sticks in your picture please?!

PinkDaydreams · 21/10/2019 10:41

Oh gosh I can see now I’ve zoomed in, coloring pencils!! 🙈 sorry!

Equimum · 21/10/2019 12:57

Pinkdaydreams yes, they are handcrafted colouring pencils 😂

Whitecandle · 21/10/2019 13:16

@PinkDaydreams sorry I did comment earlier but it didn't post!!
