An alcohol for ten people question

Happy 175 days to go!!!! I’m getting very excited so have a question- my husbands dads side of the family are joining us on Christmas Day - 8 adults so in all there will be 10 of us (and 3 kids but this is an alcohol question) so how many bottles of white, red and Prosecco each would you buy? I’m thinking I’ll buy bottles with each big shop but just want to get prepared!!

Prosecco 3 if toasting, 6 each of red and white should be loads. Just in case everyone wants the same.

Hopefully everyone will bring booze if they’re drinking but you can’t really rely on it

Do you know what everyone is likely to drink ? And how much they drink? I have some friends / family that would be happy with half a bottle and others I would buy in two bottles per head for.

If you don’t want to ask 5 bottles of each? Lidles processco is lovely and well
Priced x x

What's the worst that could happen Op?
Do you drink? Ever?
If you bought a bottle per Person, just do that you had enough, isn't it better to over-cater rather than worry that you don't have enough?
10 bottles? Of red, white, Prosecco etc.
Would that really worry you?
What's the worst that could happen? That you had a bottle of each left over?

Lots of variables.here.

How long are thet staying? Just for a meal or overnight How many are driving? What is their normal alcohol consumption like? You will know their habits.

It purely depends on what people drink tbh. A lot of our friends and family don’t drink wine so I normally have a range of ciders/beers, non alcoholic drinks and a range of white/red wines and spirits to give people a choice. I find most people bring a bottle of their drink of choice though.

Mummyshark2018 · 02/07/2019 21:21

I would get a mixture of 4 bottles of red, white, Prosecco then beer and I usually have gin/ vodka in cupboard so lots of mixtures. I would expect people to bring their own fav tipple though.

I’m just not wanting to be a terrible hostess who runs out of wine! They’re all coming to us for lunch time then goodness knows when they’ll be leaving. Maybe somewhere in the middle and have 6 bottles of each....and hope they also bring!

WellTWO of those visiting adults will be driving - so you need to think about that (less wine needed but some nice soft drinks required) x

For cost wise, a lot of supermarkets offer a decent discount if you buy 6 bottles or more in one goWineWineWine

BrokenWing · 03/07/2019 22:46

If it's family can you ask if they'll want red or white/rosé? I dont drink red so wouldn't want to buy unless I knew someone was drinking it and I'd want to get the right one. I would only get 6 bottles for 10 people as wine will be brought, dh and my brothers usually prefer beer and they switch to spirits later. We've always for bottles left over.

I wouldn't have prosecco as I don't like it, but I would have for my/dh family over Xmas a few boxes of beer, some alcohol free becks, bottles of smirnoff, bourbon, captain Morgans, couple of bottles of decent whisky, baileys, bacardi and lots of ice, lemon and mixers. Some bottles (whisky/bacardi) we have already from previous visits we've either bought or they have brought so we'd just buy anything missing or running out.

I agree about the Lidl prosecco - it is lovely! I tend to buy the €7.99 bottles which are absolutely fine and lovely to drink, but the €11.99 bottles are seriously lush.

Often there will be offers if you buy 6 bottles together - money off, extra percentage back in your loyalty card etc, or specific offers on bottles/brands that have a promotion on..... - so if you can, I would try to put aside the money and actually buy it all together when you see an offer that suits you.

In our case, for Christmas, for 2 adults, we get 1 bottle of bubbles and 2 very nice bottles of white wine. We generally choose between opening bubbles or the white while dinner is cooking, and have wine with dinner too. But don't drink all 3 that day - across 8 hours we may finish 2 bottles. But it's nice to have a second bottle of the "dinner wine" in case we decide we don't want bubbles or we want an extra glass of it later (and then cork the bottle to finish another day).

Maybe think about having something for arrival - bubbles or mulled wine or a Buck's Fizz or something seasonally cocktail-ish. Some may want a beer instead.

I would allow roughly a half bottle per wine for dinner per person, but some may drink more than that. If you have an idea, as others says, about preferences towards red or white, that helps, but I would have roughly half and half otherwise. And maybe do that as 4-5 bottles of red, and 4-5 of white to cover dinner. If you are happy with 6 of each, that would work well, and you can always use the leftovers another time yourselves.

Have some soft drinks too, for drivers or other non-drinkers. And plenty of water as well for the table (we put out both sparkling and still water).
