Would you buy a MacBook now for Christmas?

Dd 12 wants a MacBook for school work etc and we have categorically said no - but there is a possibility we could ask GP’s etc to chip in and buy one for Christmas as a surprise. Dd obviously would have no idea.
Just looking around today and see that John Lewis have the 2017 MacBook Air for £799 with a 2 year guarantee and also interest free credit for 18 months ( not that the IFC is a factor). It’s nearly £500 cheaper than the later model ( much more realistic budget) and obviously more than sufficient for a 12 year old.

But would you buy one now and put it away until Christmas bearing in mind it would still have 18 months guarantee or should I just look around nearer the time. Am I taking too much of a risk ? Thoughts!!

Would she change her mind?

I think that would be my biggest concern

No I’ve no concerns she’ll change her mind - just that holding on to it for 7 months seems a long time.

I’d go for it, if you are happy she won’t change her mind, we got my DSS one when he was 13, best purchase we’ve made presets wise. He’s nearly 17 and it’s been no end of help with exams, homework etc. He loves it and was made up as he had always said no to one.

If you purchase now you can start paying saving to pay it off in the interest free period, I’d go for it 👍
Get a good cover for it as well , as helps with the longevity of it!

I bought my daughter one last Christmas, I saved up before and bought one from John Lewis in the Black Friday sale.

Ordered actually down to £779 John Lewis ( I’d saved £550 for Christmas already so plenty of time to save for other family presents) still selling on the Apple website for £949.
I knew if I left it too long it’ll be Oos and I’d be kicking myself , also as mentioned on the bargain thread MacBooks are rarely reduced.
Thanks for your thoughts and love the user name @Villanellesproudmum.

She is 12, I would give it to her now. You are wasting 7 months of any warrantee. Explain that she will get a token christmas gift. One santa is out of the equation that is simpler.

I got this one 2017 Apple MacBook Air 13.3", Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB PCIe-based SSD for £798 from JL last November. Seems to be a permanent offer?

I don’t think I would buy an electrical item so far in advance
