What do you eat New Years Day?

I always cook another roast, so basically Christmas dinner again which is lovely but so much work. This year with going back to work on the 2nd I don't want all the leftovers and the work in my tiny kitchen on New Year's Day.

I want it to feel special without loads of effort. What do you eat? I'm veggie but can adapt most things. I'm even thinking about an Indian takeaway but worried it won't feel very special when it gets to it.

What do you cook/eat?

We'll be having a curry feast on NY eve, and polishing off the remainder of the Xmas chocs so the 1st is likely to be a day of culinary modesty/atonement.
I''ll probably do green juice til teatime, and then a large salad, some raw spring roll type things (way to cram in yet more salad!) and a fruity pudding such as banana icecream.

My birthday is later in the month ie another splurge event and I dont want to put on any weight this year, I find it hard to shift so will be back to the usual salad based regime, it seems to be working!

We have another Christmas dinner but beef and Yorkshire puddings instead of Turkey.
We have a starter of prawn cocktail as it’s the only one everybody will eat.
We will probably have vienetta for desert.
We all buy each other a little table present to.
I love it , less pressure than Xmas day and a nice relaxed ending to the festive period.

I’m cooking for guests on nye so I’m hoping I’ll have leftovers.
Otherwise, I’m just going to do a one pot casserole. I want to have an easy day.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 30/12/2018 15:58

Chinese takeaway!

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/12/2018 15:59

Steak pie with linksGrin

NoWordForFluffy · 30/12/2018 16:01

I was going to ask who added links to their steak pie as most of my Glaswegian friends seem to do that!

ScreamingValenta · 30/12/2018 16:02

We're having a five bird roast.

dementedma · 30/12/2018 16:04

I'm in Scotland and most people seem to have steak pie. We don't bother with new year(i hate it) so we will have whatever I can be arsed cooking. Fair chance it will be a bowl of pasta or something.

WendyCope · 30/12/2018 16:06

I think I'll do a beef and veggie stew. Nice and easy but hearty. With rice and lots of red wine!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2018 16:10

Depends where DH is taking us out to eat (it's my birthdayGrin). The last few years it's been Japanese which goes down well after the feasting season.

Costacoffeeplease · 30/12/2018 16:12

Steak pie with links - I live abroad so have to make it myself!

chipsandpeas · 30/12/2018 16:17

steak pie here as well

cheerylilthing · 30/12/2018 16:26

We usually have a roast. This year it's lamb shoulder, fondant potatoes, stuffing balls, Yorkshire puddings, veg, & lamb & mint gravy.

Tanfastic · 30/12/2018 17:22

I do a little buffet. Prawn ring, quiche, salad, spring rolls, coleslaw, dips 😋😋😋. Just so I can get a bit fatter

poshredrose · 30/12/2018 20:15

Steak pie with all the sides you'd have with a Christmas lunch. Homemade but less work than Christmas

Namelesswonder · 30/12/2018 20:21

I’m thinking I might through tradition to the wind and have haggis

Fluffyears · 30/12/2018 21:11

No links 😱🤢

IloveBaileysCheesecake · 30/12/2018 23:35

Hogmanay is balmoral chicken with whisky sauce, baby potatoes, green beans and broccoli.

New Years Day is steak pie with steak links, roast and mashed potatoes with carrots, peas. Followed with apple pie and custard.

Ceara · 30/12/2018 23:41

It is the law to have steak pie.

IMissGin · 30/12/2018 23:41

Steak pie, mash, neeps & sprouts (cooking for 18) pick up my steak pies from butcher in morning

Twitchintervention · 31/12/2018 08:49

My poor husband...we are both Scottish but growing up with a English dad who was a chef, steak pie was never something we did so he’s lucks our on that, much to his disappointment...

We are having family down for for a 2nd Christmas so are doing posh startery bits with champagne for present opening (smoked salmon and horseradish, prosciutto ham and HM chutney & Gorgonzola and fig blinis) Prawn Marie rose scoops on baby gem lettuce and posh cocktail sticks (manchego cheese, chorizo and and olives)

Main in rib of beef with roasted shallots and beetroot, pearl barley risotto, a blackberry and beef sauce dressed with watercress and toasted hazelnuts...

Dessert is Hestons Christmas pudding or chocolate and hazelnut torte served with cream (all courtesy of Waitrose!!)

And if there is any room a very full cheese board!!!...

Definitely no steak pie here although, might give in a buy a small one for DH’s lunch!!

adaisychain · 31/12/2018 09:23

We're doing roast gammon and trimmings tonight as a farewell meal for our festive house guest.
Tomorrow therefore will be leftover gammon, egg and acti fry chips before we make vague attempts at health.

justwantsomepeace · 31/12/2018 09:30

Lamb roast with all the trimmings yum 😍
