Homemade Christmas foos gifts?

Igottastartthinkingbee · 20/12/2018 22:18

I make mini Christmas cakes as gifts for friends every year. I’ve just read on another thread that at least 80% of posters don’t like Christmas cake!!!!!! So my friends may well just be being polite when they say they like it!

Does anyone have any ideas for an alternative homemade food gift?? For next Christmas as it’s a bit late now, I’ll be exchanging gifts with said friends tomorrow 🙈Blush

I love Christmas cake!

Lemon cord or some sort of chutney is normally very well received.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/12/2018 22:21

I'll have Dave Grohl in a Christmas jumper please!

TroysMammy · 20/12/2018 22:22

I make different types of chutney and picked and made by my own fair hands blackberry jelly.

Tony2 · 20/12/2018 22:25

How about baklava, big tray few pieces each, nice that. Florentines? Xmassy, bit too much faff? Little stollens maybe?

MergeDragons · 20/12/2018 22:26

christmas pudding biscuit truffles.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1602648/chocolate-coconut-truffles make these but don't roll in coconut, instead place on clingfilm and refrigerate, when cold dip in molten milk chocolate place on clingfilm to cool, once cool spoon a dollop of white chocolat on top and then add some holly berry and leaves sprinkles.

Everyone adores these - best eaten chilled from the fridge.
They are a faff but they look great and look impressive but aren't actually hard to do.

The easiest of the stuff I do is the honey roasted almonds with sea salt, and biscotti.

I also do Sophie grigson carrot and almond chutney, delias spiced pears, January 2018 marmalade and mince pies with a frangipani topping instead of the pastry one. They are all really easy recipes but look good.

I am also making lemon curd but have decided to keep it for me and the reindeer.

I love home made stuff. A friend in a class I do made heavenly cardoon and pistachio cake and someone else did a selection of things added to melted chocolate, like ginger and dried fruits, they were very moreish.

viques · 20/12/2018 22:40

Cardomon not cardoon!

Igottastartthinkingbee · 20/12/2018 22:43

Great ideas thanks everyone! I will be more imaginative next year. Although Dave Grohl in a Christmas jumper is my favourite sugggestion!

Nougat is another easy one- it looks so pretty and isn't difficult (my family keep offering their services to eat any batches that are sub-standard!)

PoutySprout · 20/12/2018 22:45

I'll have Dave Grohl in a Christmas jumper please!

😂

ElfrideSwancourt · 20/12/2018 22:45

Nougat is also dairy and gluten free, and you could only add dried fruit so it could be nut free too😀

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 20/12/2018 22:46

Lots of people will say thankyou for homemade food gifts but actually not eat them.

viques · 20/12/2018 22:49

RE jars for stuff, I buy small jars of tesco/sainsbury own brand Mayo. I find the jars are a good size for presents, not too small to look mean, especially if you give more than one item, but not too big that you only have two giant jars of stuff to give away! If the op starts saving in January she should have a good stash by next year, get other people to save them too, explain why , make sure they give you the lids as well, and you will have more jars than you need........

viques · 20/12/2018 22:51

S justkeepswimming I find that applies to most gifts, which is why charity shops do so well in January Wink . I only give stuff I have made to people who I know will enjoy it.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/12/2018 22:53

Wilko sells good value jars which are perfect sizes for gifts.

I do a lovely chilli jam which would be a nice gift. Christmas cookies / biscuits work well too.

PandaG · 20/12/2018 22:54

Mincemeat, flavoured gin? These will form the basis of foodie hamper gifts chez Panda

l've just received one of my presents from my best friend today. A lovely, chunky, home made coffee and walnut cake. lt's about 5" deep and positively bristling with walnuts "l put extra in."
She doesn't have a lot of money, and she knows it's my favourite, so she always makes me one for birthdays and Christmas.
l'm going to have to ration myself so it actually lasts til Christmas day!
She's also made Christmas tree shortbread biscuits for the kids in the street, and some 'nice' biscuits to put in jars for her neighbours. l'd be thrilled with any of those, but l'm delighted with my lovely cake!

katseyes7 · 20/12/2018 23:05

There are some really nice 'foodie' ideas on Pinterest too - we were just talking about this today.
Chocolate bark, so you can melt the chocolate, then when it's beginning to set, you can chuck on any toppings you like, posh or 'crap' sweets.
My friend's going to make her mum some Florentines, too. She's lucky they weren't about today or l'd have been at them!

Fstar · 20/12/2018 23:08

Honeycomb/ puff candy is meant to be easy to make.

Id also like dave grohl in person or on a jumper, thanks 😁

NoWordForFluffy · 20/12/2018 23:15

He's mine, @fstar, I baggsied him first! Xmas GrinXmas Grin

Asj0405 · 20/12/2018 23:21

Must admit I am one of the ones who wouldn't like the christmas cake or mince pies but wouldn't want to say as someone had gone to all that effort to make it for me. I would however love brownies/cookies/truffles anything along those lines.

DogInATent · 20/12/2018 23:26

Flavoured gin/vodka - too late for a christmas cake flavoured liqueur (needs a few weeks), but it's not too late for a ginger liqueur (only needs a few days).

Butteredghost · 21/12/2018 07:29

I know I'd like to get home made short bread or gingerbread people.
