Are electric carving knives any good?

I'd like to be able to produce nice thin slices of meat. Are electric carving knives a gimmick? Reviews online seem to be very mixed.

My parents have used one for years and love it. It frightens the hell out of me.

AlexaAmbidextra · 20/12/2018 19:26

I wouldn’t be without mine. It makes carving so easy.

My parents have had one for years. They were all the rage in the 80s.

I think they're a good idea - but cheffy types (my dh) would baulk.

Wouldn't be without mine.

Always had one and love it, but then again with my cooking its more of a necessity than luxury.

Trumponerous · 20/12/2018 19:33

My ILs had a great one. I bought my DH a Kenwood one but it is rubbish, chews the meat. He really would like one so if anyone can recommend a clean slicing one currently on the market I would be grateful too.

I was just thinking today I really want one but didn't know if they were any good.

We have just bought one from Lidl, it is the scariest piece of kit I have ever seen. It’s going back tomorrow.

Carrie76 · 20/12/2018 19:46

I’ve had one for years, couldn’t imagine carving without one!

MIne lives in the back of a cupboard in its box - it's been used 3 times!

Give me a well-sharpened carving knife any day.

Alanamackree · 20/12/2018 20:49

Glad I’m not the only one terrified by them!

Meat is hard to carve straight out of the oven. If you let it rest a while you’ll get thinner slices. And apologies if I’m stating the obvious, but you need to cut in the right direction too.

It seems that it's a love or hate thing which makes me even more confused. Ex MIL has one and it turns out lovely thin slices like at a carvery.

I like mine, it cuts the meat a lot thinner than I can with a regular blade.
