Hand me down scooterfor Christmas?

I want to get DD aged 5 a new Maxi Micro for Christmas. Sister has one that her DD used, good condition, stored in her loft... Seems such a waste of ££ to buy a new one, though just doesn’t feel right giving her a hand me down main present... I don’t mind parting with the cash for a new one... but it feels unethical!!!
Opinions? What would you do?

I'd give the used one and save my cash for when he cares about such things.

I'd use the second hand one for the same reasons you've stated. My ds is having a second hand bike, cost a third of the price of a new one and the money goes to charity. No point buying new for the sake of it.

Give it a good clean and stick some ribbons on it. Maybe buy it some new wheels so it at least looks new. Besides that go for it. She's 5, she doesn't care where the scooter came from she just cares that it's hers.

Defo give it - we got my DD a second hand bike last year, she had NO clue.
Both of their Micro Scooters were also second hand (not for Christmas) and neither of them have ever realised. They don't care at this age.

Unethical? Reusing rather than buying brand new seems pretty ethical to me! Maybe she’d like some stickers/bell/basket to customise it?

ReceptionMum1 · 19/12/2018 14:58

Thanks! I have actually already got a flower to adorn it, so will probably grit teeth and go for it! Thanks Smile
I meant unethical to spend that kind of money on a new one! Wink

I'd have no problem buying a second hand scooter to give as a present, but somehow feel a bit odd wrapping up the elder siblings outgrown one. I know that sounds totally illogical.

Perhaps it depends on the age gap, mine are close in age so no chance of putting something away and the eldest forgetting about it. Youngest would be fine but the eldest would no doubt want it back. Regular arguments but ones I could live without on Christmas morning.

I'd wrap related bits like helmet, scooter lock and just get the scooter out of the loft quietly.

akmum18 · 19/12/2018 15:29

I would but I’d have to buy something to go with it like a basket, tassels, Bell, helmet etc

autumnboys · 19/12/2018 15:31

We did this for a niece at her mum’s suggestion and bought new accessories etc. She loves it. Go for it!

Giggling I think it was the OP's sister who is willing to donate it. That makes it fine with me, as long as the cousin gets something nice in exchange.

You pay the older sibling 2nd hand rates and they can buy something for themselves. This is what my parents did for my Dbro and myself.

Use the money saved to get her something else that she wants.

TheBigBangRocks · 19/12/2018 18:00

If it's the style and colour she wants I would give it to her but not as a present.
