What to eat between Christmas and New Year

Trying to do my Christmas food shop and need some new ideas. I don't want loads of cooking but need something. We usually eat a lot of part baked baguettes with Christmas dinner left overs, patties made from left over roast veg with cheese and an egg on top but what about non-left over stuff? I can't think past Christmas dinner and all the food but know we will want to eat again eventually! What do you eat?

-gammon ham and salad with pickles
-cheese and ham with more pickles

  • leek and potato soup
-usually have some sort of smoked fish dish like smoked mackerel with chicory, bitter leaved salad & horseradish dressing (assembly job) -someone on another thread kindly recommended this recipe which sounds delicious [[http://www.mediterrasian.com/delicious_recipes_lentil_curry.htm potato and pea curry]] -Jamie Oliver fish pie with potato and pea mash
  • some sort of (game) pie?
-kedgeree

tend to avoid mince or pasta based dishes at this time because we have quite a bit of that usually, and avoid chicken for obvious reasons because takes ages to eat turkey up!

A lot more veggie and seafood/fish dishes to balance the meat.

We go back onto 'normal' food probably about 28th December each year - but with lots of chocolate in between!

I only usually get enough special Christmas food for the Christmas Eve to Boxing Day period, then it's left overs for 27th and back to normality on 28th. If there's still some left over then I make pies out of it or do a sauce and put it with rice or pasta. Then we look forward to another big eating session on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!

@Slightlycoddled great ideas! I'm actually veggie (but like reading what others eat) and that pea and potato curry looks amazing. I'm adding that to my list. Thanks!

We’re having a ham on Christmas Eve and DH is making his famous ham Thai red curry on boxing night (we don’t cook on Christmas Day as with relatives all day). Red curry day is honestly one of the best bits of Christmas! Would be very easy to make it veggie...

I've already ordered my 28th Dec food shop. We've gone for homemade pizzas, prawn salad, stir fry, party food and bobotie for New Year's Day.

I'll also make a big sweet potato, feta, spinach, red onion and red pepper warm salad, with a cranberry dressing & pomegranate seeds, which should last a few days as a side.

Turkey pie
Lamb curry with all the extras such as onion bhajis, naan, poppadoms
Pasta with smoked salmon
Ham egg chips
Beef or salmon Wellington for NYE
Lots of turkey sandwiches

That’s what I’m planning anyway.

Piccolino2 · 19/12/2018 00:16

Ooh, it all sounds lovely. @Nononononono33 , red Thai curry sounds amazing! Do you have a recipe? This is provided I get some shopping as my long booked slot on Dec 23rd has disappeared from my account while I was amending it

I don't really do anything special after about the 28th. If we have a turkey then I use that in various dishes (having spiced topside this year) & I always get smoked salmon for me & DD & lots of different cheeses mainly for DH.

Nononononono33 · 19/12/2018 07:30

I will try to dig it out for you...!

BiddyPop · 19/12/2018 08:55

We do a turkey curry one night
Ham and Stilton gratin (leave out ham and use veg stock I think it could easily work as veggie dish) is a festive staple

Stir fry with lots of shredded Brussels sprouts in it (fresh not cooked leftovers) 10-15 minutes peeling/chopping with a glass in hand, another 5-10 minutes actual cooking (refilled glass in hand)

Veggie chili can be made ahead (great for large quantities or even frozen)

Pre-rolled puff pastry, jar of nice tomato bruschetta topping, chopped ball of mozzarella or leftovers from cheeseboard, maybe some sundries tomatoes or jarred peppers etc - throw together and bake for 20 minutes.

Hopefully photos of the curry recipe are attached here! They overlap a bit...

Obviously we substitute the duck and we also leave out the lychees and it makes no difference.

Lovemusic33 · 19/12/2018 21:24

Just doing my shopping too, always forget about what we will eat after the big day and usually end up shopping the day after Boxing Day but trying to be organised this year. We will have..

Curry Boxing Day, buffet food for lunch.
Fish pie
Mac n cheese (using left over cheese)
Stir fry with leftover veg
Ham egg and chips

I have another food delivery before new year, we have roast beef newyears day, kind of the last big meal before the diet starts 🤣

Piccolino2 · 19/12/2018 22:04

@Nononononono33 thank you! I'll look at this properly and add to my order.

@Lovemusic33 Mac and cheese is a great idea!

We usually have this problem, usually results in a lot of takeaways.
Christmas Eve we have Chinese, Christmas Day obvs roast, Boxing Day is nibbles and party food. The day after will probs be random stuff from the freezers as both me and Mum are working so won’t have time to prepare. Fri I’m working but Mum is taking lil sister shopping so I will probs meet them when I finish to eat McDonald’s or something. Saturday and Sunday not sure, New Year’s Eve is always takeaway, usually Indian, then it goes to normal meal planning and the 5th is a takeaway as it’s DS birthday.... this year he wants McDonald’s after a trip to the local trampoline park with his friend.

Gousto and similar are delivering between Xmas and New Year - have a look for inspiration.
