I need ideas!

We have 6 people coming, one is veggie and one has a very restricted diet due to Crohns Disease, meaning they can't have sugar or most veg. In previous years I have done grilled goat's cheese salad and baked camembert, but neither was well recieved. I'd happily do a meat and veggie option if they aren't too time consuming.

Help!

Prawn cocktail alternative for veggies can be done with cauliflower and beans (sounds disgusting but actually nice!)

Kittykatmacbill · 20/12/2018 19:43

Prawn cocktail in a martini glass. It is the law.

starrynight19 · 20/12/2018 19:45

We are having prawn cocktail

FireUnderpants · 20/12/2018 19:51

I wouldn't miss the starter, but in laws like their prawn cocktail. They are the only ones who like prawns though, so dc and me have melon. Last year I cut a watermelon with a star shaped cookie cutter and will do again if I can find it.

You could do chunks of avocado in Marie rose sauce for the veggie.

AnneTwackie · 20/12/2018 20:04

I’m doing leek and goats cheese twice baked soufflé (piece of piss but sounds good) with a drizzle of truffle oil and scallops

Uberbeeboo · 20/12/2018 20:38

Baked Camembert with caramelised onion relish and dip bits. Quick and easy to prepare and always seems to go down well.

jollyjester · 20/12/2018 23:28

I do a small Caesar salad. Was going to try something different this year and my 7 year old looked like I'd just told her santa wasn't real.

"But mum we always have bacon chicken and lettuce!" Grin

caperplips · 21/12/2018 13:01

we do either prawn cocktails (with avocado in them) or smoked salmon or both depending!
Am leaning towards smoked salmon this year

gingercat02 · 21/12/2018 13:19

Mussels and crusty bread. Only me DH and DS this year (very rare occurrence) so we can suit ourselves on choices and meal timings

dreamingofsun · 21/12/2018 13:46

cava

BlooperReel · 21/12/2018 15:02

tempura prawns, halloumi and a sweet chilli dip

goose1964 · 21/12/2018 20:36

Prawns in garlic and chilli, do it every year

We're having two Christmas meals this year - a Danish one on the 24th (where we usually would celebrate a Danish Christmas), and the starter will be gravad lax on sourdough bread, and we will not have a starter when we have the British Christmas meal on the 25th as there's already so much food.

We had spelt blinis with mustard sour cream, beetroot and smoked mackerel (recipe from Le Creuset) a few years ago, and it was really nice:
