Is the alcohol not supposed to evaporate out of Christmas cake?

I made Christmas cakes this year for the first time in I think end of October. Fed it with about a dessert spoon or two of brandy every 1-2 weeks since then. I've just finished icing one to give to a friend this week and I had some of the offcut with a cup of tea and I feel slightly tipsy. Is the alcohol not supposed to have evaporated off by now? I last fed it about 2 weeks ago. Honestly between the heavy cake and the residual brandy I feel like going for a wee nap now...

All the Christmas cake I've ever had has been pretty boozy, if alcohol has been added.

But I'm no cook and have made my first Christmas cake ever this year; so i am no authority!

unless you cook it off it will stay boozy

Offcut? How do you get an offcut when icing a cake?

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 16/12/2018 16:52

It's supposed to be burnt off isn't it?

toomuchtooold · 16/12/2018 16:52

I cut the round top off it and turned it upside down to get a flat cake to ice.

No it doesn't evaporate off. It won't have been heated up and it's kept wrapped up to keep all the moisture in anyway.

Costacoffeeplease · 16/12/2018 17:56

How can it evaporate if the cake is wrapped in foil and grease proof?

BIWI · 16/12/2018 17:59

It would only evaporate if you heated it. The point of feeding it is to keep it moist, and for all the fruit to absorb the liquid - which by definition will mean it's also then alcoholic fruit!

@CaptainKirksSpookyghost. I think you're thinking of setting light to the brandy on a Christmas pudding!

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 16/12/2018 19:55

Agree with PP how would it evaporate? You added it after you cooked it. You've been soaking it nicely in alcohol Grin

Enjoy it Xmas Grin

I really can't imagine that you're drunk from eating cake. This is just your mind playing tricks.

BIWI · 16/12/2018 20:45

No it's not! If she's been feeding it with alcohol over the last few days, then the alcohol is still there.

it's also, being serious, one of the reasons why you should be very careful driving after Christmas, if you've been eating trifle and/or Christmas cake - you can be over the alcohol limit.

ourkidmolly · 16/12/2018 21:05

Yes that's normally an excuse that drunk drivers come up with when caught drink driving over the Christmas. Normally in addition to loads of other booze. Often works and they receive reduced sentence.
