Table Presents

I started this tradition 7 years ago after spending Christmas at my MILs. She does it and is spending Christmas with us this year. I've no idea what to get. So far I only have something for me, a tangle teaser which I got in the Black Friday sales. I need to get DH something, MIL, ds1 14, ds2 12, ds3 5 and ds4 2. Any ideas please.

Ds3 and ds4 - dinosaur eggs (to hatch)
Ds1 and ds2 - socks either Christmas or football club or something else they're into

wierdwords · 15/12/2018 09:50

Dh - something for him to put on to make kids laugh, like a bah humbug hat or something to suit his personality/dislikes!

Mil - bath bomb or small candle? Or funny socks.

Clockwork toys, magnets, word games with dice etc.
We have a few such things so we don't need to get crackers with crap in, and it encourages dc to stay at the table and chat to grandparents.

Great ideas. Thank you. It is mostly now to keep the little ones at the table like you said @NotCitrus. My youngest isn't a big eater at all.

I do this too
I am getting everyone “nice” soap this year.
But my kids are adults too, so it’s reallt just a token gesture.
I love table presents. I think that they are a lovely tradition in my family.

Never heard of this tradition but it sounds lovely. So basically just something from the host wrapped and at your spot at the table?

4point2fleet · 15/12/2018 10:14

I have never heard of this either. On another thread it seems 'table presents' are the main event.

Do lots of people do this?

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 15/12/2018 10:35

I only started it when I met DH. They've always done it in his family. The first year MIL got me slippers and DH said previously as it was always just adults his FIL had done joke presents to embarrass some of the family members Grin

I like it because it means another little gift for the children to look forward to when all the present unwrapping is done. We always get the Santa race crackers as well to get the Ds's to stay at the table.

What a great idea, better than crackers :)

Karwomannghia · 15/12/2018 12:57

We do it and I’ve made a list for each person to buy for someone else plus a child

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 15/12/2018 13:01

I got my MIL a lovely Elemis Shower Gel in the end. Only £10 as I used a code from another thread I'm on XMAS10 to save £10

My MIL does this. It's just a wee token thing. This year she's got the kids (ages 3-8) a Hotwheels car each to keep them occupied between courses.

TeeBee · 17/12/2018 07:23

My mum used to do this when we were kids. They were generally little novelty pencils or something similar.

ritzbiscuits · 17/12/2018 07:29

We do this but on Boxing Day. I've got my DS a Playmobil blind bag and Christmas stickers from Paperchase. I've done Lego blind bags and Hot wheels cars before.

BrieAndChilli · 17/12/2018 07:29

I put things inside the crackers so this year I’ve got a necklace, DD age 10 has some silver earrings, DH has a keyring which is a tiny screw driver and screws for repairing glasses, DS age 11 has this little contraption for cleaning glasses as his are always filthy!! And just looking for something for DS2 age 8, will probably end up with a Lego figure.

ChikiTIKI · 17/12/2018 08:12

I am going to do table gifts this year. We will all be at my sisters house and one of the things I have been asked to bring is crackers.

Was going to go down the edible route but after reading this I might get a nice bar of soap for the men and nice candle for the women (it's 3 couples there on the day).

ChikiTIKI · 17/12/2018 08:16

I am not doing crackers as the hats are naff, the presents are naff and the crackers make the table all messy. Going to see if I can get some better hats online....

sashh · 17/12/2018 08:40

It used to be quite common at works Xmas parties, gift would be from the employer, it sort of a more personal idea of a cracker.

Oh I've never heard of this tradition but will definitely copy it! Guess it could be like a Christmas party favour (but tasteful one of course)Grin
