What to eat on Boxing Day?

So, due to people arriving at different times I’m planning the main meal to be 5/6pm. Don’t fancy the beige buffet this year so thinking a selection of turkey curry and rice, cold meats with potatoes, pickles, crusty bread, sausage rolls (!) and desserts.

But what do I offer for a light lunch earlier in the day?

Cheese board and crackers?

We always do a big fry up about 11.30 on Boxing Day. Anyone can have cereal or something earlier but most of us still seem full from the previous day or just eat Quality St all morning

Soup and rolls?

Make some vegetable soup/ ham
Heinz Tomato Xmas Grin

Yes a brunch type thing- blt sandwich or salmon on a muffin with hollandaise sauce

Ricekrispie22 · 15/12/2018 09:50

Baked Brie with sliced French bread and a few pâtés

I would make soup and serve with bread. Maybe have the sausage rolls with soup at lunchtime?

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 15/12/2018 10:03

I have a turkey Wellington from Aldi. I'll also cook some party food.

Thank you all for some great ideas! Still not decided though!!

Assuming that you might have people for both meals, just make sure they aren't too samey.

We are out for most of Boxing Day as it is my DN's birthday, so we always order a massive curry from our favourite Indian takeaway place.

I do find having something totally different from what we have eaten Christmas Eve & day a nice change.

tillytoodles1 · 15/12/2018 19:32

We have a bacon roll in the morning, sandwich for lunch, then go out for a Chinese buffet with the family.

YahBasic · 15/12/2018 20:57

Soup and cheese toasties.

Bagels with cream cheese, avocado & smoked salmon, bacon & scrambled eggs. Mini pastries and berries and Mimosas.

akmum18 · 15/12/2018 21:39

Soup, sausage rolls with cocktail sausages crackers etc like a mini buffet, rolls with selection of fillings, pizzas, you don’t want everyone feeling too stuffed for the curry later on so stick to light picky food

In that situation I'd do a substantial brunch and miss out lunch all together. Kedgeree is our usual Boxing Day brunch, but anything would do as long as it comes at 11-ish. Some nibbles when the bar opens early afternoon will tide anyone over who is peckish earlier than your planned meal (young children might need something at lunch time assuming they would eat breakfast at usual time, but easy to feed kids - sandwich, pasta or leftover meat and chips perhaps).

Cold Gammon with salad, pickles and roast potatoes. Maybe a hunk of cheese and sliced cold boiled egg too.

Grumpbum123 · 16/12/2018 18:52

All the leftovers from Christmas Day and party food from Christmas Eve plus a gammon

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/12/2018 19:27

After Chr. Day, no cooking in this house! Or as little as poss.
Cold turkey and gammon, salad, coleslaw, baguettes shoved in the oven, pickled onions, fruit, cheese, mince pies/Christmas cake, etc. Baked potatoes. I might just possibly make a macaroni pie if I can be bothered to grate 400g of cheese, since it goes really well with cold meat and salad.

There will probably be some sort of fry up breakfast, but someone else will do that since for me Boxing Day is a day of rest/Buck's Fizz/chocolate/telly. And probably a walk if it's not raining, so that I can then slob with a clear conscience.
