So my sister and her partner are early 30’s, no kids both with good incomes coming in and and are basically quite an Instagram wanky couple!!

She is not shy on coming forward with present ideas and we have been already sent through the annual gift idea spread sheet as she hates surprise’s

However they are both quite wanky foody’s and like to both eat out and cook a lot and I have it in my head a good way to really piss her off surprise her would be to make a small food hamper with lots of different ingredients, foods, and spices.

What would you suggest to add, looking for ideas that might make a meal a little bit more special or an ingredient that’s you wouldn’t ordinarily buy on your Tesco’s shop?

The last two dickhead aside, thanks everyone, these are great ideas.

I’m down to my last couple of people to buy for and that another two ticked of my list. Smile

Ah, of course you don’t have an attitude problem...

M&S Food has a great dry goods deli section - lovely jars and packets from specialist brands...pastas, sauces, condiments, biscuits, chocolate etc. I get amazing srocking fillers there every year but you could easily make up a (pricey) hamper. Also farm shops are a great source of unusual bits and pieces.

Do you have a local Indian grocer or Polish shop? I love the local Indian supermarket and have sent random veg and things like a jelly coconut to my brother before now.

Some of the tins are interesting, punjabi tinder, rose gel, sugar cane.

Packet mixes for gulab Jamun and Dokha.

Spices go down well and are useful.

ButFirstTea · 14/12/2018 06:46

Am I one of the dickheads?? I gave you a real suggestion!

WingingWonder · 14/12/2018 06:49

For vegan the bosh cook book is excellent

SergeantPfeffer · 14/12/2018 07:33

The Asian vegan cookbook by Hema Parekh is excellent and has plenty of obscure ingredients Grin An Asian supermarket will often have things like jelly mixes made with agar agar (so vegan). Get them a packet of mochi- should be vegan and a bit obscure.

Twitchintervention · 14/12/2018 08:21

Brilliant!! They have both travelled a lot so do a lot of Asian & European cooking! I didn’t think about looking at specialty food shops...good thinking guys!

Second Bosh I'm veggie but love their recipes. Also if they are vegan avocado oil is great although it turns things an alarming neon green

PurpleDaisies · 14/12/2018 08:31

Bosh is brilliant but very trendy. It’s the sort of thing I might expect then to have already.

AllTheCakes · 14/12/2018 08:44

Lots of wanky ingredients here:

www.souschef.co.uk

Have bought some unusual chillies and fruit powders for DH before.

Rosehips · 14/12/2018 09:37

I'm your sister and I'd love something from Sous Chef, so maybe avoid them if you want to piss her off Xmas Grin The cookbook with ingredients sets are nice.

Persepolis is great for exotic veggie/vegan food foratasteofpersia.co.uk/shop/product-category/hampers-gift-packages/

Twitchintervention · 14/12/2018 11:19

Thanks everyone, went for your advice and made an order of the Sous chef website...

Was actually quite reasonable as they have a wide range of gifts, Ingredients etc so could get quite a bit for my money!

Also bought the Sous chef reusable drawstring bag just to keep the wanky side of the gift up!!!

Ottolenghi has an online shop. Full of delicious wanky food

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/12/2018 11:30

If they mildly annoy you and you sort of want to please them and sort of want to punish them for being foodie wankers, buy them a whole truffle. https://trufflehunter.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuMndopuf3wIVj-J3Ch0I6gSMEAAYASAAEgIE1PD_BwE

I bought one for my foodie brother in all loving seriousness and it stank the whole house out to the point that he had to put it in the garden, and then some foxes ate it and did truffle-stinking shits for days Grin

If they like truffle food (I don't but lots do) it is a delicious thingy and if they don't you have made their house smell repulsive while appearing generous and thoughtful. Win-win!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/12/2018 11:37

Ah, I didn't read to the end. Well done OP - shopping ninja. Next year for the truffle, then.

Twitchintervention · 14/12/2018 11:39

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden alas unfortunately my budget won’t stretch to whole truffles but it would have been the perfect wanky present!! Grin

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 14/12/2018 11:44

Gosh, actually they have really gone up since the last time I bought one. They really are gold-plated shite.

dizzydaisies · 14/12/2018 11:48

If you wanted to be evil / a genius you could have come up with a very wanky looking, but totally unworkable recipe with the oddest, most awful ingredients.
Make the recipe card look very select, very expensive, buy them the ingredients and if they're properly wanky they'll be convinced it's what all the real foodies eat 😆

christmaschristmaschristmas · 14/12/2018 12:57

I would probably go with the Ottolenghi book and hamper, or something similar.

TBH we are pretty wanky with food Grin and have all of the stuff people have suggested from our regular Waitrose shops, so it wouldn't be much of a gift.

Laska2Meryls · 14/12/2018 13:05

Just for a laugh do add some Flying Saucer Sweets in ! ( No really ! it would be fun) .. I'm pretty sure they are vegan..
