What do you usually eat on Christmas Eve for dinner/tea/supper whichever you call it. I know so many people that have a full on roast which I've never understood as you're having one the next day? We always get a Chinese- so bad but so good! what's your food traditions?

Gammon,, egg and chips. We have the left over gammon over Christmas in sandwiches or with other picky/buffet type food.

Auntiepatricia · 13/12/2018 14:16

A feast of mezze type food. Good pate, breads, party food from M&S, roasted Camembert, expensive stuff and great wine.

TrickyD · 13/12/2018 14:39

TrickyD that's the most Mumsnet post I've ever read
😀😀😀
Yes leccybill and to make it worse we have got our little grandson what other MNetters describe as the 'wankiest toy ever' - a Grimms Rainbow.

SpottydogDomino · 13/12/2018 14:55

Another vote for (home made) lasagne, add garlic bread and a glass of wine, and slob out on the sofa watching films on TV.

I made the lasagne a few days ago and froze it. No need to make life harder than it needs to be!

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 13/12/2018 14:57

A ‘naice’ Buffet; fresh bread, pate, cured meat, cheese and biscuits and some nice cooked nibbles. Oh but this year I’m also doing a big dish of nachos with all the trimmings! Yule log for dessert and ice cream with chocolates toppings for the children.

Vagndidit · 13/12/2018 14:58

Picky bits 😁

tryinganewname · 13/12/2018 14:59

It was always a Chinese for us but since going vegetarian it just isn't the same so we now do cheese board and various deli-type items as a small buffet for 2.

bushtailadventures · 13/12/2018 15:05

When my DM was staying we had Cheeseburgers and chips because it was what she wanted. Now, we'll have home made soup with nice bread, with(hopefully) a gingerbread house to break for the evening, including a bit left for Santa for dgd.

Thats the plan at the moment anyway, it could change

WendyCope · 13/12/2018 15:06

seafood (in Spain) mainly clams and big prawns, quick and delicious and cheap and hardly any washing up.

Grumpbum123 · 13/12/2018 15:09

We are having a baked Camembert and a mix of M&S party food with champagne and we will play cluedo

SilverDoe · 13/12/2018 15:23

Similar to a PP I will be doing a festive ham joint along with cheeses, pates, nice bread and pop in the oven party food, plus lots of chocolate!

anniehm · 13/12/2018 15:27

If it's just us we eat out, usually Indian because you don't have to book. If family come I make something a bit exotic, Mexican is on the provisional menu this year. Our German friends have their Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, and just eat various junk on Christmas Day which is somewhat attractive

Jenniferturkington · 13/12/2018 15:28

We have a snacky buffet- canapés, cheese board etc. Dd1 calls it the ‘Pringle buffet’ and says it’s her favourite meal of the year!

Piebeansandchips · 13/12/2018 15:45

Funnily enough pie, beans and chips Grin

FurryDogMother · 13/12/2018 15:58

Kedgeree - except I'm low carbing this year and so it'll be of the deconstructed variety - ie smoked cod sprinkled with curry powder, pan-fried and served with a couple of poached duck eggs and fresh coriander. Very satisfying!

BarbedBloom · 13/12/2018 16:13

We are having our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve this year, but other years we normally have a takeaway

SazCat · 13/12/2018 18:59

I'm thinking a baked Camembert with crusty bread and a few other bits - washed down with mulled wine WinkWine

choccybiscuit · 13/12/2018 19:13

Take away Indian

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 13/12/2018 19:17

This year its M&S king prawns and smoked salmon platter with accompaniments and rose Champagne

Simonsaysitschristmas · 13/12/2018 20:02

We always have a Christmas ham, fresh bread, salad, macaroni cheese etc. Easy enough for people to just grab before we go out for drinks or before people pop over

Celticlassie · 13/12/2018 20:14

Only the three of us this year so I think I'm going to make chilli for DH and I. We can then have the leftovers in the week after. DD will have some of the Christmas soup.

AragonsGirl · 13/12/2018 20:23

We have a bbq. Was my family tradition to have one with our neighbours on Xmas eve, and my dh and his family always had one on Boxing Day, so we’ve carried the tradition on

Lovemusic33 · 13/12/2018 20:38

Dominos

SazCat · 13/12/2018 21:09

Love the idea of a bbq! Archers

ShowOfHands · 13/12/2018 21:19

I can't read the thread because somebody always has "picky bits". Eugh.

We usually put something in the slow cooker but both DC want cheese and potato pie with mustard glazed ham and baked beans. Then apple pie and custard. Comfort food I think.
