To tinsel or not?

So I’m going for on 80s nostalgia tree this year. Coloured lights after years of soft white & lots of different coloured baubles after years of traditional colours. Do I go full on & embrace tinsel or stay away & keep it tasteful? Although can 80s nostalgia ever be tasteful?

Am also big into 80s nostalgia tree (aka ‘tacky’). Tinsel is on here!!

YahBasic · 09/12/2018 19:18

We’ve gone non tinsel, mainly because that’s what the cats seemed to be attracted to, and wanted to pull off last year.

Instead, we’ve gone for giant gold and red glittery bows from the Range.

NewYoiker · 09/12/2018 19:35

My husband has a thing for tinsel.. I don't like it but he loves it... he said his parents had a tree with tinsel on at Christmas when he was growing up so it makes him nostalgic however he said this in front of his parents who vehemently denied ever putting tinsel on the tree so god knows where he's got that from 😂 anyway I've given in and put it on

Toomanybaubles · 09/12/2018 19:39

I haven't got any but I remember lametta fondly. Xmas Grin

QueenieMum · 09/12/2018 19:41

Toomanybaubles I was literally just googling lamentable because of this thread (no pun intended) Grin

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/12/2018 19:41

I'd love to see the return of garlands (tissue paper or foil) strung across the ceilings.

QueenieMum · 09/12/2018 19:42

If you're having a retro tree it has to be with tinsel. Wouldn't be retro without it

Carolcool · 09/12/2018 19:49

I have never not had a clashing crazy 80s Christmas tree, since I started having my own tree! I just thought that's what Christmas trees were like. My mum just gave me half of her box of crazy old decorations and I went from there. It's got ones I made as a kid and old 60s decorations from my grandmas.

However even I draw the line at tinsel. Lametta all the way.

QueenieMum · 09/12/2018 19:49

Our ceiling used to be covered in foily, brightly coloured hanging decorations held up by blu tac. It was a competition to see how many would fall down over the festive period and which would be the first to go!

Bluntness100 · 09/12/2018 19:56

Depends what look you want, full on eighties tack Ville or more tasteful 80s reincarnation.

Tinsel is the embodiement of tacky so,,,,🤣

Elfontheshelfiswatchingyoutoo · 09/12/2018 20:39

We have tinsel and I would defy anyone to declare ours is tacky.

Tinsel op.

KiteMarked · 09/12/2018 21:32

Do what makes you happy. Our tree is covered in bead strings, tinsel, and ancient decorations made when the DC were young. There is no fashion element to it at all, and we all adore it. The DC exclaim over each ornament as it comes out, remembering when they got it, when the made it, etc etc. Being stylish is overrated.

Philomensapie · 09/12/2018 21:33

Tinsel but don't lametta.

Alanamackree · 10/12/2018 02:44

Tinsel for authenticity.

Rhynswynd · 10/12/2018 02:51

Vote for tacky here. I love my crazy Christmas. I also have garlands made of foil GrinXmas Grin

@Rhynswynd and @NewYoiker
Those trees are gorgeous!!!!

Jozen · 10/12/2018 07:47

Our work tree is retro. Basically everyone's cast offs since 1996. It's the best looking tree in town.
I love it so much I've done 80's-tastic trees in my own home for years. We have coloured lights, coloured tinsel, baubles of all shapes, colours and sizes. It looks bloody awesome.

canigetaliein · 10/12/2018 08:07

Great trees!

Ok I’m going to start with the lights & decorations & then will test out tinsel. I have to buy some first! Lametta won’t work with our cats.

Cherries101 · 10/12/2018 08:15

Why not do ribbons or beads instead?

canigetaliein · 10/12/2018 08:39

I usually use beads anyway although i only have gold & silver, might try & buy some coloured ones. Clearly nostalgia is on trend, i’ve been bidding on 80s decorations on eBay & they have been going for ££££

I love a classy Christmas tree, however I have to have tinsel somewhere because it's childhood memories at its best.

This year it's around the bannister but I've had it around the book case, around the clock, on the mantle.

DH hates it but it's not Christmas without tinsel. This year I even got the 70's tinfoil ceiling decorations donated to me my Gran as she is too old for decorating now. I will put a couple up to honour the gift and watch DH go apoplectic when he sees them....

PipGoesPop · 10/12/2018 10:09

Please link to non tacky tinsel. I loathe tinsel unless it's part of a child's costume. Husband and DD love it. Non tacky tinsel is the dream.

Figmentofimagination · 10/12/2018 10:42

I always have tinsel around my tree. My parents have always gone for red and gold colours with ribbon, so when me and DH moved in together we decided our tree would be full of colour. Lots of tinsel, coloured lights, loads of different baubles and decorations that mean something to us. We love it!

Figmentofimagination · 10/12/2018 10:43

Oh, and we also have tinsel up the banister, on the mantelpiece, around photo frames. 😁
