My mum is so hard to buy for!!

We live with each other, she is one of these who buys whatever she wants/needs. She doesn't wear jewellery, I bought her a watch last Christmas, she had vouchers for her birthday a couple of months ago and still hasn't used them.

Argh.

So.. tell me what you're buying your mother and I might get some inspiration.

Just agree not to get each other anything. Sounds like you waste money for the sake of it

IggyAce · 09/12/2018 16:39

My mum is similar and it’s her birthday right after Christmas too.
Some suggestions my mum likes an expensive bubble bath so I normally get her some of that.
Take her for afternoon tea to a local posh hotel.

Atetoomanymincepies · 09/12/2018 16:39

I got mine tickets to a show, my mum has everything she could possibly want already too

Nacreous · 09/12/2018 16:39

My mum is getting some Alice in Wonderland crockery that she really likes, but currently only has a single mug, and then some sketchbooks, paintbrushes and a random colouring book.

GemmeFatale · 09/12/2018 16:45

Mine died years ago but my dad and his wife I buy consumables for (usually whiskey or rum for him and champagne or a liquor for her). They share whatever is bought, and yes they could buy their own but it’s a gift they enjoy and don’t have to find a space for or keep.

MadeForThis · 09/12/2018 16:48

An echo dot?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/12/2018 16:49

Has she got a Kindle?

Otherwise, how about taking her out for lunch/afternoon tea?

BluthsFrozenBananas · 09/12/2018 16:51

My mum is getting a years English Heritage membership and a canvas print of a photo of her and DD on the beach.

EvaHarknessRose · 09/12/2018 16:51

A cute thermos flask I saw in Go Outdoors. We just exchange small gifts.

Grinchly · 09/12/2018 18:32

I don't celebrate Christmas so we agree not to exchange gifts. She gives me a cheque for £15 like she has done since I was 18, and I buy some nice edible bits from marks to take to her on 25 December. It's a joyless exercise but I continue because she would be on her own otherwise.

I'm giving my mum a fleece dressing gown because I think they are lovely and she's never had one - I think she finds her old towelling one too heavy to lift easily, and she has a kimono but it's too light for the winter.

I'm trying to persuade some hyacinth bulbs to bloom for Christmas. If I manage it, I will give them to her.

KirstyJC · 09/12/2018 19:26

Wine and chocolate. What else does a mother need!!

HelenaJustina · 09/12/2018 19:29

A small teapot with built in loose leaf brewer
Loose leaf tea
Nice biscuits!

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 09/12/2018 19:31

I've sponsored a room and counselling for a young person at Centre Point, my mum was sexually abused as a child and has had a lifetime of mental illness because of it so I know she will appreciate it. Had she not met my dad her life could've been very difficult as there was no access to help when my mum was in her teens, dad was her lifeline.

Racecardriver · 09/12/2018 19:38

A keepcup? It’s one of those things I never knew I needed.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 09/12/2018 20:19

London art gallery membership.

National trust membership could also work.

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 09/12/2018 20:26

I like these ideas! (though I think mine - who also buys everything she wants/needs...tenfold - has many of these already).

I am getting mine an umbrella with blue skies and white fluffy clouds on the underneath. She is pretty moany about bad weather! And she was meant to get a personalised jigsaw puzzle of the ONS map of where she lives for her birthday...but it got lost in the post and was too late so I'm now giving that to my dad.

XiCi · 09/12/2018 20:33

My mum is also hard to buy for. She's buys anything she needs or wants herself and has so much jewellry etc. She had a birthday recently and I booked for us to go to a champagne tasting evening which she loved. Mil is also hard to buy for and I've booked her and her friend in for a spa day

mrsdaz · 09/12/2018 21:06

I’ve got my mum some nice garden accessories as she likes little garden things (hedgehog ornament and little fluttery butterflies). Some green and blacks chocolates, a diary and calendar with dogs on. A collapsible washing up bowl! She’s been desperate for one so she can store it and pop it out when she wants to soak her feet!

lotusbell · 09/12/2018 21:12

My mum is no longer here but I always struggled, apart from perfume and gloves, bedrock etc. But she was a big SCD fan and a few years before she died I saw an advert for the tour, and knowing she'd never even think of booking for herself, I booked tickets for us both. I'm not a fan but it was worth it as she loved it. I think we went again the year after too.

lotusbell · 09/12/2018 21:12

Bed socks!

Slippers and a book. We've all agreed just to do small gifts this year as we're having a big family holiday to Florida in May which we all need to save for.

StormyLovesOdd · 10/12/2018 12:41

Im getting my Mum a photobook of old photos of the family and some new ones of the grandchildren plus a voucher for afternoon tea for her and my stepdad.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 10/12/2018 13:37

Mine is similar, she doesn't really do luxury and is quite down on herself about clothes etc. She does like high end moisturisers and body products which means that every year she gets those from everyone. I have bought her a cashmere cardi that she won't appreciate and will let DD who's 11 choose her some smaller things and hope she will hit the mark!!
