Fuck! I've forgotten what 4 year olds do!

I'm sending presents to a 7 year old and a 4 year old I don't see often. My son is 14 and I've happily forgotten how to do these ages. They are both really good readers. I bought Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf for the 7 year old with a view to her reading it herself, and a reasonably complex picture book called Moon for the 4 year old. I'm struck with doubt - could give Clever Polly to the 4 year old and I have another thing I can give to the 7 year old. Aagh! Any thoughts?

books wise dd (4.5) is just into simple chapter books being read to her - e.g. the faraway tree. complex picture book would still be fine.

Thank you that's incredibly helpful. Maybe I'll stick to the original plan.

Stick with the plan, I haven't read either book but looking at them they both look age appropriate. I have a 7 and 4 yr old and I'd be happy if they received them.

StorminaBcup · 07/12/2018 21:16

Books are always really well received by my just turned 5 yr old.

My 4 year old mostly wrestles, dances and hits things with sticks. But I do t think that is very helpful for this thread...
He likes “how things work” books, though. Has a couple of usborne lift the flap ones about the body and various machines that are pretty good.

If it’s the moon book I’m thinking about it’s perfect for a 4 year old (one called tree in the same range?)

Annandale · 07/12/2018 22:17

Grin Ahoy, sometimes think I should just wrap a stick for most kids.

I've just had a google Ladygaladriel and yes it is that one. Phew!

My four year old boy loves books - the Osborne phonic books cat in a mat etc go down well.

Invisimamma · 08/12/2018 16:18

My four year old is just getting into the horrid Henry books. He also like the 'dinosaur pooed....: Series and some of the Julia Donaldson ones are a bit more grown up like trolls or trex.

My just turned 8yr old likes David walliams, Pamela buchart, Cressida cowell, Harry potter.

My 5.5 year old still loves picture books being read to her, even very simple ones. She's not a great reader, but can read simple books herself. She enjoys easier to follow chapter books being read to her just about but definitely prefers picture books. Her sibling was a very good reader and I still read picture books to her until she was 7.

slappinthebass · 08/12/2018 18:17

One of the reviews for the Moon book suggests an upper age limit of 8, I think it will be fine.

Iknowthatguy · 08/12/2018 21:33

My 4yo nephew loves superheroes and his newest favourite, mr potato head (he's just turned 4 last week).

Stompythedinosaur · 09/12/2018 02:13

I think Clever Polly would be a bit hard for most 4yos to read to them selves, but great for reading to them. I think it would be ideal for a 7yo, my 7yo found the book funny. I would stick to your original plan.

Choccywoccyhooha · 09/12/2018 02:36

My four year old has the Tree book by the same authors as Moon - she loves it. I think Moon would be perfect.

MamehaSan · 09/12/2018 02:58

Can anyone link to the Moon book, please?
(Asking for a friend...)

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 09/12/2018 12:57

My 6 year old still loves picture books so I'm sure will be fine for a 4 year old. Her current favourite is please mr panda which is incredibly simple and we've got her the others this year for Christmas.

Even my 10 year old will still read picture books as they are familiar and easy to read. So I'm sure they will be great!!
