Christmas Teenage Boy Gift Ideas, not to do with PHONES or COMPUTERS

Just that really, our 16 year old son is obsessed/addicted to computer games and would play them 24 hours if he could. Really want to give him a main Christmas present which will encourage him to spend a bit less time on screens. We are already struggling to get him away from games to eat meals or do homework. Sadly he is not sporty, but is clever in a non academic way, although very lazy.

Some money to be spent on driving lessons? One of those off road courses. With a chance to get more on his birthday.

LaChatte · 05/12/2018 21:35

Following this thread with interest as have a similar model at home!

Tiggles · 05/12/2018 21:44

My non sporty teen is now madly into skateboarding.

moodyblues · 05/12/2018 21:50

A guitar or ukulele? A voucher for lessons? Cookery book for students to encourage him to spend some time in the kitchen.

Art stuff, sketch pad? It’s so difficult for this age group, my ds 15 wants a gaming mouse, keyboard, more ram, yada yada yada.

He is getting clothes, smellies maybe a gaming mouse.

An Experience. Young Drivers is for 11+ and you don't need a license to drive on many driving experience type places.
Groupon, Wowcher is good for stuff like this.

jocktamsonsbairn · 05/12/2018 21:55

Books
Greggs/Nando's/costa voucher
Cinema tickets
PJs - can get ones featuring popular games
tickets for an event
I've made my 16yo ds a Percy Pig mini hamper with all the different bags of Percies.
Game - exploding kittens/cards against humanities etc (CaH only if very open minded)
Clothes
Trainers

jocktamsonsbairn · 05/12/2018 21:56

Yes to young driver!! My ds loved that!

Tiggles · 05/12/2018 22:05

Oh yes my Ds loves to cook too. It's his job but he loves recipe books and utensils.

2moveornot2move · 05/12/2018 22:09

I have bought mine a portable drum kit www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SJQZ6C4/ref=psdc_5496170031_t1_B016KNIJHG?th=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21

He saw one at his cousins last year and loved it, I’m hoping it will drag him away from the Xbox

Icequeen01 · 05/12/2018 22:22

I have a very similar sounding DS who is a little older now than your DS. A few years ago we were lost as to what to get him for Xmas which was not related to gaming. We knew he loved anything funny so we got tickets to a comedy play in London and took him to his favourite steak restaurant. He loved it and it was great to have a lovely family evening out which are few and far between once they are older teenagers.

Zoflorabore · 06/12/2018 06:13

Ds 15 is obsessed with his Xbox, less so since mocks etc and I think it's a difficult age to buy for.
I started a thread last week on it too.

Off the top of my head this is what I've bought so far-

Fortnite T shirt with dance moves on
North Face man bag ( small, across body )
Football shirt 3rd kit
Astro's
Skin for Xbox one and pads
Turtle Beach headphones ( requested )
Xbox one game ( Red dead something )
John Paul Gaultier aftershave set
Fortnite cushion for bed
Wet and dry shaver
Personalised signs for room re: gaming
Everton Hoodie
Everton phone case
Tickets for away game (£££)
Nando's voucher ( get this every year )
Gym clothes ( Under Armour )
2 football annuals
L'Oreal men skin care set
Yankee Candle men's one for room

I can't think what else. He's also getting a laptop.

BrokenWing · 06/12/2018 11:29

You say he is not sporty, what does he do for physical fitness, even non sporty types need to do something to get moving, is it team sports he is not interested in?

Is there anything solo he might be interested in for fun which is physical maybe with a technical aspect to give him a challenge (fitness tracker, body cameras recording journey which he can then edit, drone with camera filming scenery from above while walking)? Climbing centres, swimming lengths, cycling, running, skateboarding, skiing, hill walking etc

NoLeslie · 06/12/2018 13:11

What has he asked for? I think it would be kind of sad having your main present as something you don't want/to improve you... And probably backfire. I think this is something you have to tackle in everyday life but not so much at Christmas.

That said, I would recommend a segway experience for any teen especially if a parent does it with them.

cancla · 06/12/2018 22:05

Does he like music? Vinyl is making a big comeback. We have got DS a few of his favourite albums and a record player.

explodingkittensexpansion · 07/12/2018 09:46

Buy what they want not what you think is superior.
