Christmas Day evening snacks - not turkey sandwiches !

We have a small fry up Christmas Eve morning, then have main meal about 3, then have a break before the pudding. So we need something else in the evening. We usually have pate, cheese & biscuits or baked Camembert or similar.

I'm thinking this year I might make a Mexican layered dip because it's light, fresh and very different to the dinner. Would welcome some other ideas please. Not sandwiches as we eat a lot of sandwiches the rest of the year. And shouldn't take long to make of course (or easy to make ahead the day before). Thank you

we just do a huge cheeseboard and nibble at left overs.

SoMuchToBits · 05/12/2018 16:18

Cheese, biscuits, pate, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, chutney, potted pork. That's what we're having, anyway! Smile

If you're going Mexican (which I think is a fab idea cos it's my fave!) Then how about nachos, dips, or put out the ingredients for everyone to make their own wraps. You could make a chilli a few days in advance and reheat quickly.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/12/2018 16:34

Thanks - yes will probably put out cheese and biscuits too as that's what we always have but I fancied a change. Quite fancy the Mexican layered dip which we've not had for a while so a brilliantly obvious idea to carry on the Mexican theme!! The thought of loaded nachos is making me drool !

(We'll have Christmas cake and mince pies too, and will put the fruit bowl out but doubt it will be used!)

Can you tell me more about the Mexican layered dip please? Grin Intrigued.

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/12/2018 16:43

I can also recommend the chicken and chorizo empanadas from M&S. Not cheap but they do 3 packs (12 empanadas) for £7.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/12/2018 17:15

@MizzMimi sure - it's created in layers of various Mexican style ingredients and best made in a shallow glass bowl so you can see the layers. Start with a layer of refried beans (I always use tinned ones), then layers of chopped avocado, tomato, sour cream, chopped spring onions and black olives, and grated cheese. Think that's it - just google layered Mexican dip if you want a full recipe. Downside is if you have fussy eaters as there are lots of ingredients but my lot eat everything. I did have a friend round who doesn't eat tomatoes so just made her a mini one separately

Op should say Christmas Day, not Christmas Eve!!! Autocorrected and didn't notice. Question remains the same!!

We usually have pate, cheese & biscuits or baked Camembert or similar

This is perfect, why mess with it? (add a salad to lighten it up?)

Ricekrispie22 · 05/12/2018 17:24

One year, instead of a cheese board, we had a cheese fondue. Three different bowls of melted cheese and lots of bits to dip: chunks of breads, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, rolled up Parma ham, apple, fig slices, potato wedges etc...

MizzMimi · 05/12/2018 17:27

Mmmm Mexican layered dip sounds delicious - I'm stealing that idea - thanks OP

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/12/2018 17:32

@Santababyclaus I actually agree with you - just love this dip so much and haven't made it for ages so thought it a good opportunity. Cheese and biscuits will be on tap all over the season with us all coming and going at different times

@MizzMimi it really is lovely. You need something to scoop it with - ie not carrot and cucumber sticks, more like tortilla chips or for this i prefer to cut soft tortillas into 8ths and bake so that you get alll the flavours of the dip rather than overly seasoned tortilla chips

Turkey tacos or fajitas Grin

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/12/2018 17:41

Thanks @ikltownofboothlehem - can't believe I typed the question without arriving at the 'other Mexican snack' ideas' myself!!!

I just buy a load of canapés frozen plus a cheese board.

KitKat1985 · 05/12/2018 18:53

Can you just get some party food and do like a buffet? If everyone has only had Christmas lunch at 3pm I would have thought party nibbles in the evening would suffice rather than a full meal.

Laska2Meryls · 05/12/2018 18:57

Cold Pigs in Blankets and cold Roast potatoes ( and cheese/pickles ). What more do you want? Its the Law anyway

(chocolate isallowed also )

Batshittery · 05/12/2018 18:59

Stand pie. It's the only thing that will do. Lovely

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/12/2018 19:13

We make a pie with all the leftovers on Boxing Day so saving it all til then. We go to a lot of dos over the festive season where the pre-prepared party foods are on offer, hence looking for some different (but just as convenient) ideas

We do a massive salad, nice bread, leftover turkey, prawns, ham, cheese, pickles & sauces, chuck it all out on the table & graze on it over the evening. Not everyone can manage much after eating a 3 course Christmas dinner starting at 12.30 & not finishing until 3.00. Boxing day is usually a fry up of all the leftover veg & mash with Turkey or ham with sandwiches for supper.

Oneinthegrave · 05/12/2018 20:40

I’m just doing chicken skewers, baked camembert and crusty bread, some nice smoked ham and a tin of celebrations as we’ll just pick at it while playing board games / watching films. Got mini sausage rolls, pizzas and jaffa cakes for the kids
