Present for an 18m girl whose parents don’t like plastic tat!

We don’t know her well to know what toys or books she’s already got, but the parents are quite environmentally friendly/aware and I know the mum hates anything overtly pink and girlie or generally plastic!

Can anyone think of anything maybe a bit quirky (£20 ish?) that they might not already have?! Blush

Goodnight stories for rebel girls! Lovely, lovely book. A little quirky, and will be appreciated as she grows older. It's my 4yos favourite.

KatherinaMinola · 04/12/2018 21:25

Bigjigs also have some nice stuff - all very well made IME.

I'm not a fan of the Rebel Girls and similar books.

There's a really beautiful wooden circus set on amazon currently for £21 I think it is

LaurieMarlow · 04/12/2018 21:27

'Plastic tat' is such a lazy term.

I'm not quite sure what it means. Is it a blanket ban on all plastics? What about the high quality ones? Frankly, I can't think of a better toy for an 18 month old than a basic duplo set.

If 'quality' plastics are allowed, B toys have some lovely stuff.

Highginx · 04/12/2018 21:29

Grimms wankel.

bourbonbiccy · 04/12/2018 21:29

Aldi have some lovely wooden toys at a reasonable price. I left it too late to get the tea set but they have some lovely other bits.

Pixie2015 · 04/12/2018 21:30

Lovely toys... can be a bit spenny at the top end but plenty for smaller budgets too... they just all look so beautiful, I want them all!

Dressing up clothes

90mammasophie · 04/12/2018 21:33

Maybe a nice woollen cardigan or nice quality outfit from JoJo Bebe and then a small game from Orchard (cute and educational)

StorminaBcup · 04/12/2018 21:35

My ds is 2 and he plays with this wooden rainbow stacker a lot when he's at his childminders. It stacks up to a small size and looks quite nice too.

These wooden stacking blocks are also great. I bought them for ds1 when he was a similar age he still likes them now. Have a look around though, I'm sure I only paid £15 for them.

Lovely rag doll with clothes. Starter set of wooden railway. Pull along toy?

Misty9 · 04/12/2018 21:37

The hape wooden toolbox is still a bit with my dc, now aged 4 and 7 but it's years old.

silkpyjamasallday · 04/12/2018 21:43

We found it really hard to find decent bath toys that don't end up manky like rubber ducks etc. Babi pur have some great boats made of recycled wood pulp or something (so very worthy for a plastic tat hater),we've got a pirate one and one with a hook and sea creatures to catch, and little wooden figures. They've been a hit with 2yo DD and I only wish I'd found them sooner. Think they were around £15 each, but just one would make a great present. And although they seem too heavy to float they do!

DrWhy · 04/12/2018 21:43

Cuttable wooden food, the Grimms mini rainbow, start of a train set, JoJo box of small wooden dinosaurs. All have gone down well with DS.
I think most parents avoiding plastic ‘tat’ would not include duplo or Lego in that catagory. To me it means things that break easily, aren’t used for long or don’t encourage open ended play/learning - so it makes no odds to me whether they use playmobil or peg people for small world play. However, for some others there is also an asthetic element too.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/12/2018 21:50

How about a music box like this? My dds still have theirs many years later, they are very sweet.

As an alternative how about getting her a baby mug from Emma Bridgewater with her name on?

slappinthebass · 04/12/2018 22:37

Totally agree with Babi Pur/Baba Me. My suggestion is a Grimms Wankel. £25 full price but use the monthly 10% code. Join the Facebook babibpur group for the code. Hands down the most played with toy my nearly 2 year old got last Christmas. Or just give them a Babi Pur gift voucher.

slappinthebass · 04/12/2018 22:37

Or a nice book and a Holztiger or Lanka Kade animal.

PippilottaLongstocking · 04/12/2018 22:44

Babipur, Myriad, or Little Acorns To Mighty Oaks are my top 3 wooden toy shops, the code ‘BUDDY’ will get you 10% off on babipur and ‘WINTERSG’ or ‘WINTERAS’ will get you 10% off on little acorns

fringegrin45 · 04/12/2018 22:45

Knitted dolls/animals

SylvanianFrenemies · 04/12/2018 22:46

Plan Toys wooden train set. The smaller one is £20. My DD loves it.

Alanamackree · 05/12/2018 13:27

Don’t worry about your gift looking small, compared with what you might expect to get for your money in plastic. The parents are likely to recognize the quality of the gift.

IKEA do a lovely set of play pots and pans that were a huge hit with my dc. Although it is rather a noisy gift.

Play clothes can be a problem for some parents as they’re cheaply made synthetics. Play silks are a gorgeous choice.

Alanamackree · 05/12/2018 13:28

rainbow playsilk

wooden puzzle, not pink or girlie, about £20.

The Studio have some really nice wooden gifts that you can personalise with the name of the recipient. Chair, fruit/cutting set, jigsaws. Not particularly expensive either.
