What do you eat on Christmas Eve/Boxing Day

So what do you eat on Boxing Day and Christmas Eve. Personally it's a Chinese takeout because who wants to cook on Christmas Eve and then Boxing Day it's a rerun of Christmas dinner because A) there's nothing left from the big day and b) a majority of the family comes out on Boxing Day so there ends up being like 14 of us on Boxing Day vs 6-8 on Christmas Day.

It depends a bit really -I agree that Christmas Eve should be low effort so it might be something more everyday like a stew in the slow cooker, toad in the hole or if we are feeling 'treaty' and we don't have a crowd around, something like steak for DH and some nice shellfish for me (veggie DC are usually out). Definitely can't face a full roast dinner with trimmings on Christmas Eve as I've heard some do!

Boxing day is all about the leftovers - so leftover meat sandwiches for lunch with leftover cheeseboard or canapes, and then leftover christmas pud, mince pies or selection box for afters! We usually have a slow cooked and glazed gammon joint with leftover red cabbage and leftover roast potatos (sometimes made into bubble and squeak) for dinner on either boxing day or the day after, depending on when family are around...

Christmas Eve - Take Away

Christmas Day - croissant and jam for breakfast, lunch is a salmon starter, lamb roast and all the trimmings, chocolate and salted caramel pudding, cheese and crackers and dinner is probably nothing because everyone is too fat and too full to make anything.

Boxing Day is a homemade lasagne that I will make the week before and freeze with garlic bread and salad.

Ooh I'm hungry now!

Christmas Eve - cheese and roast ham with different breads, chutneys etc

Boxing Day - leftovers from the above but with added leftover turkey.

hiptobeasquare · 04/12/2018 16:15

Christmas Eve- I do a low key lunch, sandwiches and home made soup then it’s picky tea from about 5 o’clock.
Boxing Day- Leftovers for lunch then something easy like ratatouille for tea.

stridesy · 04/12/2018 16:18

Christmas Eve takeaway normally KFC although gone off that.
Boxing Day-cold turkey, stuffing, pork pies, crumpets, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, smoked salmon to name a few
New Year's Eve oh gets takeaway kebab and I wait three hours for a Chinese.

Christmas Eve - fish. I’m grilling some mackerel for myself, h is having salmon in paper and kids in batter. Served with salad. Probably chips for kids too.
Boxing Day - Buffet with the leftovers. Salad, cheese, bread and pickles too. There will also be a ham. Favourite day food wise.

We ordered a Chinese last year and it went down fantastically. Doing it again this year less than £40 for 6 people (we all share) minimal clean up. This year I would have just had an operation so low stress, prep and tidy is a must this year.

Christmas Eve sometimes in work as is DH so just a 'normal' quick n easy tea. If I'm off I'll do a ham for with butties, chutney n salad.

Boxing Day we go me mums and have picky tea and take the leftover meats for the butties

Christmas Eve - I used to call it Smorgasbord, but that's probably wrong. Cured and cooked meats and fish (parma ham, salami, corned beef, smoked salmon, squid rings, prawns etc). Open the Christmas cheeses. Hummus and another dip, with carrot and pepper sticks. Olives and cherry tomatoes. Crusty bread/flatbreads/breadsticks/crackers - something carby to pick up bits. All laid out on the table for everyone to help themselves.

Boxing Day - as many packs of M&S party food as we feel the need to cook, with crisps and any leftover dips, some mince pies, and lots of mulled wine. And birthday cake (DD). It's "Open House" for family and neighbours all afternoon and into the evening, so bits and pieces.

This year Xmas Eve will be party food and a bottle of champagne after SIL's Christingle service.

Boxing Day will be Christmas lunch leftover pick and mix for lunch and sausage meat and chips for tea - amongst copious amounts of chocolates, sweets and crisps

VeniVidiViciTwice · 04/12/2018 16:34

Christmas eve this year a takeaway. Boxing day is leftovers and buffet style food (the sort of party food platters from Iceland) you get where you just stick them in the oven, cheese board etc. Then we just pick all day.

purplecorkheart · 04/12/2018 16:35

A gang of friends family go put for lunch on Christmas eve. The pub books us in every year automatically at this stage. We tend to cook some kind of joint of meat Christmas Eve morning (often spiced beef) for sandwiches that night. St Stephen's day tends to be a casserole. We don't normally have leftover as we do something like individual beef wellingtons on Christmas day.

AragonsGirl · 04/12/2018 17:26

Christmas Eve- a bbq
Boxing Day - leftovers from Christmas Day plus the Christmas ham, chutneys etc

coolmum223 · 04/12/2018 18:03

A lot of people seem to eat leftovers on Boxing Day. Kinda like the idea of that since it's what I do the 27th and if I can the 28th. But I like the excitement of knowing I get 2 real Christmas dinners

Evening buffet - crisps, sandwiches, salsa then mince pies and cake

Boxing Day- huge breakfast then I make pizza dough and let it slow rise . Everyone does their own toppings then we bake Xmas Grin

No leftovers .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/12/2018 20:48

Boxing Day - as little cooking as poss. Cold turkey and gammon, chutney, pickled onions, salad/home made coleslaw, maybe a macaroni pie if I CBA, , baked potatoes.
Fruit, cheese, mince pies, etc.

EdWinchester · 04/12/2018 20:50

We meet up with friend Christmas eve and then have M&S party food and fizz.

Boxing day we eat cold meats, cheeses and pate. Have just bought 2 wheels of brie and will get lots of other cheeses. Can't wait.

msnowtybach · 04/12/2018 21:42

Christmas Eve - rib of beef or a roast ham with stuffed jacket potatoes (cheese and bacon) and salad.

Xmas day - turkey etc

Boxing Day - cold meats, cheese, pickles. Coleslaw, fresh bread.

Doilooklikeatourist · 04/12/2018 21:51

Christmas Eve = M & S Chinese or Indian ready meal

Boxing Day = my favourite day ! Leftovers and bubble and squeak , sometimes I make a flaky pastry pie with layers of leftover turkey , stuffing , sausages and anything else hanging around

akmum18 · 04/12/2018 22:12

Party food style indoor picnic on Christmas Eve usually pizzas, sausages and picky things. Boxing Day is a big buffet with a bit of everything. Both days separate to Xmas dinner so we don’t get bored of it plus lots and lots of chocolate Grin
