If you have a small oven, how do you serve up Christmas dinner/a roast with everything hot?

..... including plates and serving dishes? I have no room in my oven for either. Does anyone use a plate warmer they would recommend? And how do you get your serving dishes hot with no room in oven? (I use a steamer for veg but the dishes are plastic - would love a steamer with glass serving dishes but don’t think one exists?)

SErving dishes ...heat by putting boiling water in them ( or stash them in the bath or a bucket filled the hot water)

Meat ..cook first and wrap in tinfoil and towels

We always have mash to supplement the roasties to save oven space

Hey I bet you could dry fry the pigs in blankets as well

Petitprince · 03/12/2018 20:39

Are you using the full height in your oven? Could you get an extra shelf to put plates on?

Alanamackree · 03/12/2018 21:52

Meat benefits hugely from resting so I do all veg/roasted/gravy while the turkey sits under a large swimming towel. 45 minutes of resting is absolutely fine.

Plates can be heated in shortest cycle of dishwasher, or stacked onto a sturdy saucepan of simmering water. Carefully change the plates around a couple of times (with oven gloves).

Put a little water on your crockery and hung them in a microwave on high power for three mins to warm them. Be careful when taking them out not to spill any (now very hot) water on yourself.

My DSis does the turkey on the barbecue, partly because it tastes good and is quick but also because it frees up space in the oven.

I bought one of these Buffet Servers a few years ago and find it very useful.

GiantKitten · 03/12/2018 23:58

For the first time for many years we're having a turkey this year - previously we've had beef & pork, & DH has struggled to fit everything in our single oven.

He's going to cook the turkey first, then take it out & smother it in towels etc while everything else cooks. Should be much easier, & even if the turkey's a bit cool by dinner time the gravy will be hot Grin

GiantKitten · 03/12/2018 23:58

we don't bother warming plates btw.

Cook the stuffing and pigs in blankets either the night before or first thing in the morning then reheat in the micro just before serving.
I serve a turkey crown and gammon.the crown goes in early and is cooked and left to rest in time for the roasties t go in. The gammon I cook in cherry coke in my largest sauce pan on the hob. Veg is a mix and roasted and steamed.
Plates are heated by putting them in a the washing up bowl in hot water. I take them out and dry just before serving.

Pigs in blankets go on the hob in a frying pan.

Roast potatoes and veg go in when the meat rests

Serving dishes - like pp said - heat with hot water.

I do not bother with plates.

Ricekrispie22 · 04/12/2018 06:59

Like PPs have said, get the turkey out of the oven at least 45 mins before serving.
When you take the turkey out, you can put in the roast potatoes and pigs in blankets
Mary Berry says that you can half roast the potatoes the night before so they only need 20-30 minutes in the oven.
15 minutes before serving, get potatoes and pigs out of the oven and wrap in foil to keep warm. Put your Yorkshires in the oven. If you make your Yorkshires ahead and freeze them, they only need about 8 minutes www.saga.co.uk/magazine/food/cooking-tips/best-ever-yorkshire-pudding-recipe When Yorkshires are done, turn oven off and put plates in to warm for 5 minutes.

I bought a second hand hostess trolley last year. It was £50 on Gumtree. Life changing!

MaisyPops · 04/12/2018 07:09

We have a hostess trolley to keep things warm. It works a treat.
Meat can come out to rest whilst we finish off shorter things.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/12/2018 08:54

If you're having turkey, it will keep hot for an hour wrapped in foil with a couple of tea towels on top. It's always better to rest it for a while anyway.
That should give you plenty of time for roast potatoes (have them parboiled and ready to go), anything else that needs to go in the oven, and for cooking anything on the hob.

Hostess trolleys can be good - I had one when I only had one small oven - and hadn't realised how long a turkey would keep hot for if well wrapped up! - but they take up quite a bit of space so if you'd use it only rarely a simple hotplate would be better.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/12/2018 08:58

Boiling hot gravey helps a lot, as does binging pig in blankets and stuffing balls in microwave just before serving. We usually have mash too, just because it's really tasty!

hostess trolley

apostropheuse · 04/12/2018 09:23

If your grill is on top of your oven put the plates to warm in there. There will be enough heat generated from the oven to heat them.

MrsPear · 04/12/2018 10:42

One small oven with separate grill that I cook roast on most week - I have two shelves. Meat goes on first. For the last 20 minutes the potatoes -second shelf - go in then meat out cover in foil and a tea towel. Turn temp up and fat in for Yorkshire puddings. Wait til hot then add the Yorkshire puddings go in top shelf and turn potatoes. Pigs in blanket could go in then too - I would use the grill insert on the floor. That all takes half an hour ish in my oven. Put veg on to steam whilst I serve the rest and then they are served last. If you like softer vegetables then just put them a little sooner. Plates go in the warming blanket if I remember to get it out. Serving dishes warmed in hot water is a great idea - I put mine in the grill section.

WWYDhelpplease · 04/12/2018 17:33

Meat cooked the day before and then covered in gravy. Warmed through on the day and then placed outside to tick over on a warm bbq.

Plates in the microwave.

Roast tatties and pigs in blankets in oven when meant comes out.

Veg in steamer on counter top.
