What to get a 10 year old girl who likes reading and writing

10 y/o niece.
Loves reading and likes Harry Potter books, is there anything similar that she would like?
I was going to get her some stationery too but I'm not sure what, I'm guessing smiggle is a bit babyish. Maybe some nice pens and a notebook, but I'm struggling to find nice ones online.

My daughter's 10 and still likes smiggle things. She's more of an older 10 too. I've also bought her a write your own story book by usborne off Amazon for about £6. Maybe get that and some stationary?.

Ruth2009 · 02/12/2018 23:22

That's a good idea, my friend sells usborne, thanks

Calligraphy pen and book of instructions

Huffabook · 02/12/2018 23:26

I came on to say calligraphy set

HeddaGarbled · 02/12/2018 23:30

I know it can feel like a bit of a cop-out to get gift cards, but if she really loves reading, she will really love going to a book shop and choosing some books for herself. Having the books to read is great but, for a book-lover, the book shop experience is a real treat too.

Tiggles · 03/12/2018 00:19

My 10yr old Ds is similar.
I have got him Harry Potter scrabble (was on offer at Amazon for £20) and also a write your own adventure book. If you search write your own story book there are lots of different genres on amazon for about £6 each

Stompythedinosaur · 03/12/2018 00:23

I came on to recommend the Write Your Own story books too!

Paperchase does nice stationary that is a bit more grown up than Smiggle.

You can get sets of the sweets from Harry Potter (e.g. Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, Jelly Slugs, Chocolate Frogs, Butter Beer) from Lakeland I think.

Otherwise how about sharing some of the books you liked at her age?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 03/12/2018 00:27

Emma Carroll's novels are lovely for her age group, set in the olden days and full of suspense: 'Frost Hollow Hall' and 'The Girl Who Walked on Air'.

'Seawhite' spiral bound A4 sketch books (blank pages) are fab and the paper is sturdy enough for calligraphy, sketching and a bit of watercolour. I've used them as journals since I was her age, nice to look back at!

converseandjeans · 03/12/2018 00:33

Frixion pens, big box of sharpies, book voucher, blank books for drawing in, story dice.

Prizepudding · 03/12/2018 06:48

The book Wreck this journal is good. DD likes Wilkos for stationary, they have lovely notebooks and journals and it’s much cheaper than paper chase.

HuevosRancheros · 03/12/2018 08:29

Paperblanks notebooks are lovely (they do lined and plain), but quite pricey so a bit of a treat. They have beautiful covers :) You can get them from Amazon etc, and I’ve seen them instore in Ryman’s, dare say they’re stocked elsewhere.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 03/12/2018 08:37

I second the calligraphy books & pens. My 11 year old who sounds very similar to your niece got a couple of books and a set of pens last year and they were the biggest hit, and still regularly in use a year later. She has since bought the same books & pens for one of her best friends who is also very similar, and they have gone down equally well with her.

I personally wouldn’t go for the Usborne book - I think it’s too young for a 10 year old - more suited to 7-8 year olds. This one here is much better for that age group and this is a good price for it.

Emma Carroll books suggested ipthread are an excellent recommendation; also the Whizz Bang Chocolate Shop and anything else by Kate Saunders. Best gift my similar 10 y old received was a team of good qualityA3 plain paper!

TranmereRover · 03/12/2018 08:42

Ream not team!

belleandsnowwhite · 03/12/2018 14:47

EMP.co.uk have some really nice Harry Potter stationery, house colour notebooks and wand pens.

Talith · 03/12/2018 14:47

Lockable secret diary.

WerewolfNumber1 · 03/12/2018 14:52

Diana Wynn Jones books - JK Rowling has acknowledged her as an inspiration. Eg witch week, tale of time city, the lives of Christopher chant.

Maybe those story dice? Waterstones sell them, they have pictures of elements to include in a story to sort of help to kick start your writing.

blueskiespls · 03/12/2018 15:13

If you want more interesting slightly more grown up, then PaperChase has lovely things. Amazingly good quality.

Ruth2009 · 03/12/2018 19:10

Thanks for all the suggestions, I've ordered a calligraphy set and the write here write now book, sure she will love them

Has she read the Uncommoners series?

Ruth2009 · 03/12/2018 20:13

Not sure, I've just looked at it on amazon, it looks lovely but I've bought her a different book now. Will keep the other ideas for her birthday!

Hi I'm buying for girls with similar tastes - can I ask which calligraphy set you went for?

WeirdCatLady · 04/12/2018 18:10

Paperchase do lovely stationery, and also have a mooch on www.theliterarygiftcompany.com

LavenderBush · 04/12/2018 18:14

Another vote here for Diana Wynne Jones! Brilliant books; can't go wrong. The Chrestomanci series is a good place to start.

LavenderBush · 04/12/2018 18:16

I have read the Uncommoners, too... quite good book but not a patch on Diana Wynne Jones imo.
