What do you NOT do at Christmas?

What do you not do at Christmas time that you believe most other people do? Mine are:

  • Attend/host a Christmas party at someone’s house where there are loads of expensive canapés and people are dressed in sparkly dresses from Next
  • Have a starter on Christmas Day
  • Have unexpected guests turn up expecting dinner and gifts

Make a Christmas cake or pudding. I mean to every year and don’t manage it

anxious62 · 01/12/2018 15:47

Get dressed on Christmas Day.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 01/12/2018 15:48

Give presents to anyone except immediate family. Some people seem to buy for so many people. It must get very expensive!

greendale17 · 01/12/2018 15:50

Eat a roast dinner- never been a fan

AFistfulofDolores1 · 01/12/2018 15:51

Eat turkey
Eat Christmas pud
Have a huge family gathering - usually just three or four of us, which is my idea of heaven

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/12/2018 15:54

Do the family get together thing.
Have a starter.
Eat so much during Christmas that you put on half a stone in a week.

Annandale · 01/12/2018 15:56

Wear a Christmas jumper. I'm too old, in my day a Christmas jumper was a slightly unfortunate home knit made by an elderly aunt which, ho ho, would be in a difficult mustard colour or have one sleeve longer than the other. The idea of spending money on an acrylic jumper to wear once a year that lights up with a reindeer's nose on it is really appealing not something I feel I can justify, also my mum would be horrified so I can't [sulks]

ToEarlyForDecorations · 01/12/2018 15:57

I/we don't:

Have or attend 'posh' (or any) Christmas parties
Host loads of either unwanted or uninvited 'guests'
Do Elf on a shelf wtaf is that anyway ?
Have the neighbours round (ever)
Go to Church or Christingle or crib service etc (love a good Carol service though)
Worry about serving canapes or starters on Christmas day i.e. don't serve them.

Feel the need to start new traditions/be alternative (I am a Christmas Nazi er I mean I ruthlessly enforce our Christmas traditions. It's taken me all year to work up the nerve to serve apple crumble on Christmas Day not Christmas pudding.)

Come out with any bollocks about no one sends Christmas cards anymore. I do.

MeetOnTheSIedge · 01/12/2018 15:59

Have a starter, but then until I came on MN I didn't think anyone did - I've had Christmas dinner in many homes over the years and never been served a starter.

Ditto Elf on the Shelf and Christmas Eve box, never heard anyone mention doing them IRL.

We don't do new PJs on Christmas Eve or satsumas in stockings. Don't dress up specially for Christmas Day, might wear a sparkly topbut no heels, hair, make-up etc.

Ted27 · 01/12/2018 16:01

Have Christmas dinner - lasagne followed by apple crumble and custard.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/12/2018 16:03

1moreRep · 01/12/2018 16:06

simbobs · 01/12/2018 16:07

No starters here, no extended family gathering, definitely no bread sauce. Oh, and probably no turkey this year, either. Only 3 meat eaters and we prefer goose.

Ilovealexa · 01/12/2018 16:07

THAT BLOODY ELF

MamaBearThius · 01/12/2018 16:10

Cook!
I cook every day of the year, not Christmas day! I make something in the slow cooker Christmas eve and then when we get back from the beach (good old Skeggy) our meal is ready! Not really one for the whole 'traditional' day

OneStepMoreFun · 01/12/2018 16:10

Elf on a Shelf
Christmas Eve boxes
Family rows
Midnight Mass

Grumpbum123 · 01/12/2018 16:15

Christmas Eve boxes
North Pole breakfasts
Elf on the shelf
Avoid all Xmas parties, no sparkles here
Dress up in Christmas Day, prefer to wear normal clothes

itsnowthewaitinggame · 01/12/2018 16:18

Despite there being many to buy for I really don't spend a shed load of money and never have and everyone gets a small gift
Don't do pud, mince pies
Never went to the work Christmas party
Don't go to the panto
Actually really enjoy our own little low key Christmas

WipsGlitter · 01/12/2018 16:19

Christmas Eve boxes
Elf on the Shelf
Church
Get invited to glittering parties - we are going out loads this year but not to any parties
Put the decorations up in November!!!!

BarbedBloom · 01/12/2018 16:26

Turkey
Starters
Host a party
Roast on Xmas day (we have ours Xmas eve)
Church

Peanutbutterjar · 01/12/2018 16:31

No kids so none of the Father Christmas, elf, reindeer food
No Christmas Eve box, seems excessive seeing that it’s Christmas Day the next day
No starter, or over indulging Christmas Day. We have nicer than normal food and drink, but the same amount as a normal Sunday roast
Minimal decoration at home, we have no room for a tree so have other decorations around the house instead
No parties with sparkly dresses
No family arguments, yet!

But, we have a lovely time, seeing friends and family. Give and receive presents, lovely food and drink, and 3 weeks off work.

Fstar · 01/12/2018 16:44

Avoid the in laws... oh no wait, i do try and avoid them at all costs 😀

Dont eat turkey or christmas pudding

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/12/2018 16:46

I don't drink alcohol or eat meat/fish/chicken so it rules out 90% of what's in the supermarket .

Notatallobvious · 01/12/2018 16:46

Same as you OP. No posh parties or Christmas Day starters ruining the main course in this house. Can't recall the last time we had unexpected visitors either, think we give off anti social vibes in this house 😂

BishopBrennansArse · 01/12/2018 16:54

We don't do the fucking elf, Christmas Eve boxes or Turkey.
